Bright Works Ring2 Workspace

What is this?

This page is used to track all of TheDuckMan's1 edits to pages that they did not originally create, so we can remove/revert them and track our progress as we do so.

This is referred to as "Ring 2" of the Bright Works project, as opposed to "Ring 1", which comprises the full body of works authored solely by TheDuckMan. The most important step of Ring 1 — removing TheDuckMan's solo works from the SCP Wiki — has been completed.

What's the plan?

Ring 2 consists of two main steps:

  1. Plan: Describe all the edits TheDuckMan has made to pages they did not create, and recommend a course of action for each page. The "Page List" section at the bottom of this document contains a "Plans" section in which you can write out this course of action.
  2. Edit: Apply the course of action described above in the "Plan" step, eliminating all creative decisions made by TheDuckMan to pages they did not make.

What can I do right now?

Currently, we are in the "Plan" step. Therefore, you should find pages in the "Page List" section marked as "NOT STARTED" and identify what TheDuckMan added/removed to the page, and, based on the nature of the additions/removals, create a plan for what to edit on the page, and add that to the "Plans" section for that page. You do not need permission to edit this document; just jump in and make the change. Any page deemed to not require edits can be set to "ACTIONED" (see "How will we track progress?"); those that require edits in pages we do not have custodianship over should be set to "IN PROGRESS" or "BLOCKED", since we cannot complete them yet.

How do I decide what goes in each page's plan?

Generally speaking, we plan to eventually remove any 'creative' edit by TheDuckMan, while adding as little replacement content as possible and still retaining the overall flow of the document. In practice, this means that the plan should require that all changes by TheDuckMan be reversed, except for the following:

  • Edits which only affect spelling, punctuation and grammar, involving no creative decision-making from TheDuckMan.
  • Edits representing staff processes that could have been done by any other staff member (e.g. license box fixes, attribution metadata changes, reversions of vandalism/malicious edits).
  • Edits that decrease Bright's influence (e.g. an edit where Bright removes the Dr. Bright character from a page). Ultimately, reducing Bright's influence is our primary goal and should take precedence over reverting Bright's changes in the few cases where those goals conflict.

There is obviously still some uncertainty and edge cases here; our goal is to identify and document these edge cases before we commit to making page edits.

Guidelines for making edits

Note: For the time being, only make edits to pages that you are allowed to edit — i.e. pages under staff custodianship, pages under your custodianship, or pages you authored. We will address the remaining pages once we have formulated a plan for all pages.

When you make an edit, do not leave an accompanying comment in the forums nor the "Short description of changes" box — doing either will essentially add a permanent "Bright!" marker to the page, and we don't want that. It's also better if all the documentation stays here, in one place, instead of being scattered throughout many pages.

How will we track progress?

All pages listed in the "Page List" section of this document (see below) must have one of the following statuses. Take care to spell these properly so that other contributors can search for unfinished work items using Ctrl-F:
Status Text Meaning Usage Notes
NOT STARTED We have not started working on this item yet. N/A
IN PROGRESS We are still deciding what actions to take on this page, or have not finished implementing any actions. Feel free to skip this stage if the page you are working on will only take a few minutes to fix.
BLOCKED We have examined this page and determined that further decision-making is necessary before action can be taken. For instance, we might need to first contact the custodian or original author of the page; or we might need to discuss with more staffers to make a better-informed decision. Note that this stage is optional and can be skipped for most pages.
ACTIONED We have taken all necessary action on this page, but these actions have not yet been independently peer-reviewed by another staff member. Note that while "action" generally implies deletion of content created by TheDuckMan, for some pages, "action" instead means that we've determined that nothing needs to be done (for instance, if the only edit TheDuckMan made is simply a punctuation fix, or if content by TheDuckMan was already removed long ago). N/A
RESOLVED Action has been both taken on this page and independently peer-reviewed by another staffer. N/A

How do we know we're done?

This process will be done once all 193 pages are marked as RESOLVED.

To verify this, use Ctrl-F in the Page Source of this page and check for instances of the string **Status: RESOLVED**. If it shows up 193 times, then we know we're done.
