Bright Works Proposal Draft: Near Total Removal

Near Total Removal

What is This?

This proposal focuses on the fact that the SCP Wiki still has content created by a known abuser, and has chosen to remove almost every aspect of the works they created on the wiki. Specifically, this proposal would unlist1 all of Bright's2 pages, with the most harmful works being left empty, instead redirecting to an updated version of the Bright List deletion note. This prioritizes removing Bright from the wiki, while supporting contextual information, so that we can acknowledge the harm caused.

This proposal balances removing Bright from the SCP Wiki, without pushing it under a rug. By redirecting to the note, we are able to explain the harm caused and frame why we chose to remove the pages.

What Issues Does This Proposal Address?

Issue: Harmful Works Authored By Bright

Details: Bright used their works and the fame gained thereby to manipulate their victims. The works continue to amplify Bright's visibility simply by existing. Even in the author's absence from the site, these works might still lead vulnerable persons to interact with Bright.

All Bright works are inherently harmful as a result of their role in perpetuating Bright's legacy and influence. The reason why works are classified as 'Harmful', 'Ambiguously Harmful', or 'Non-Overtly Harmful' is based on the literal content of each work. Works classified as Harmful are works that were considered to have the most harmful content, notably content involving harmful portrayals of subjects such as sexual assault, the degradation of woman, abuse of minors, and the normalization of abuse and control — all of which was used to manipulate victims. Ambiguously Harmful Works refer to pages that contain content that is to a lesser-degree as harmful as outright Harmful works, or could be read as not overtly harmful. Non-Overtly Harmful Works are works where the content has no apparent issues. There is no such thing as a Bright page that is non-harmful. All of Bright's pages perpetuated their influence and reach.

Resolution: If this proposal is chosen, the following steps would be required to resolve this issue: For each harmful page, a staff member with Mod Tools (OS+) would need to move the page to the unlisted category.3 For each newly cleared slug, a staff member would need to create a page, redirecting to the Bright Note page; this way, people visiting pages that once contained Bright's works will understand what happened to them and why they were removed instead of being left in the dark when they attempt to visit them.

This is Resolved When: This issue would be considered resolved when all harmful pages have been unlisted, and the URL slugs redirected to the Bright Note.

Issue: Bright's Co-Authored Page(s)

Details: Of the 63 pages authored by Bright, only one was a collaboration with another wiki author, that being SCP-902. As this page does not contain any material deemed harmful by staff and was written in part by another author, removing this page entirely would raise additional questions about staff's ability to unilaterally delete an author's work if it does not break any existing rules.
Resolution: If this proposal is chosen, the following steps would be required to resolve this issue: 'AdminBright' would be removed from the page's metadata and the licensebox and replaced with 'TheDuckMan.'4

This is Resolved When: This issue will be considered resolved when 'AdminBright' has been removed from the page's licensebox and metadata, and replaced with 'TheDuckMan.'

Issue: The Slots

Details: The question of what to do with slots that formerly contained Bright's work has a simple answer. It would be possible to allow the slots to be filled via regular site procedures; however many believe that particularly harmful slots should not be replaced and should instead hold a redirect to an updated version of the Bright List page, or have their own disclaimers. For the purposes of this proposal, what is done with the former slots will depend on whether the article in question was deemed to have 'harmful' or 'ambiguous' content.
Resolution: If this proposal is chosen, the following steps would be required to resolve this issue: All slots which contain articles deemed 'harmful' or 'ambiguous' by staff will be unlisted, and redirect to the Bright List Page. An updated version of the Bright List page will be created to better cover the problems with the content, the real life harm caused by the author and content, and the failure of staff to act promptly on this issue. All slots which contain articles found not to have harmful content will have their articles unlisted, and the slots will be released per standard deletion process

This is Resolved When:
The Bright List page has been suitably updated, all articles selected for unlisting have been unlisted, all slots formerly containing 'harmful' or 'ambiguous' pages have been replaced with redirects to the Bright Note, and all 'non-harmful' slots have been released such that another user can write an article with them.

Issue: Off-Site Reaction

Details: When the Bright List was initially removed, there was a sizeable reaction from part of the offsite community which took issue with the action. Some individuals were simply confused by why such a large page had been deleted, as not everyone is informed about Bright's conduct and how it relates to their on-site work, while other individuals disagreed with any action being taken to remove Bright's influence from the site. Because staff was caught off-guard by the initial action taken, they were not immediately prepared to release a statement on the issue, causing unnecessary stress for staff and non-staff members of the community alike.
Resolution: If this proposal is chosen, the following steps would be required to resolve this issue: A statement would be written in advance of any actions taken, to explain why staff took said actions. Community Outreach would be made aware of any changes being made, and would help draft the written statement, and this statement would be posted publicly when this proposal has been enacted

This is Resolved When: The issue will be considered resolved when the proposal has been drafted prior to any action being taken, and is posted once action is taken.

Issue: Ambiguously Harmful Works Authored by Bright

Details: Of the 63 pages that were authored by Bright, 15 of them were found to contain ambiguously harmful content. In this case, 'Ambiguously Harmful' means that the works contain content that either relates to/reinforces the predatory behavior that led to Bright's AHT ban, or attempts to normalize said content.
Resolution: If this proposal is chosen, the following steps would be required to resolve this issue: For each ambiguously harmful page, a staff member with Mod Tools (OS+) would need to move the page to the unlisted category; this will make the page unviewable to non-staff while still retaining evidence of Bright's harm. For each newly cleared slug, a staff member would need to create a page, redirecting to the Bright Note page; this way, people visiting pages that once contained Bright's works will understand what happened to them and why they were removed instead of being left in the dark when they attempt to visit them.

This is Resolved When: This issue would be considered resolved when all ambiguously harmful pages have been unlisted, and the URL slugs redirected to the Bright Note.

Issue: Non-Overtly Harmful Works Authored by Bright5

Details: Of the 63 pages that were authored by Bright, 27 of them were found to only contain non-overtly harmful content. Despite being non-harmful in a vacuum, these works still contribute to the impact and reach of Bright on the wiki. Out of these 27, two present unique problems which would prevent them from being unlisted: the SCP-2000 Contest Hub, which is important to site history; and SCP-902, which is coauthored.
Resolution:
For SCP-902, a staff member with Mod Tools (OS+) would need to re-attribute the page from 'AdminBright' to 'TheDuckMan' (Bright's original username). This makes it clear that Bright does not hold any position of authority on the SCP Wiki, while maintaining attribution to remain compliant with the CC BY-SA 3.0 license. For the SCP-2000 Contest Hub, a staff member with Mod Tools (OS+) would need to re-attribute the page to 'Staff'. Bright's contributions to this page are minimal enough that attribution is unnecessary. Of note, in recent years, staff has been reattributing site pages to "Staff" for consistency regardless of which user originally posted it, so this action is well-precedented. For each remaining non-overtly harmful page, a staff member with Mod Tools (OS+) would need to move the page to the unlisted category; this will make the page unviewable to non-staff while still retaining evidence of Bright's harm. For the now-open non-overtly harmful SCP slots, staff may, at their discretion, release them in a staggered manner, so as to prevent a rush of authors from claiming them immediately. As these works' contents themselves are unrelated to Bright's predatory behavior, linking them to the Bright note is unnecessary.

This is Resolved When: This issue will be resolved when ALL of the following are true: SCP-902's 'AdminBright' attribution has been changed to 'TheDuckMan', the SCP-2000 Contest Hub has been reattributed to 'Staff', all remaining non-overtly harmful articles have been unlisted and all SCP slots that once contained non-overtly harmful pages have been released, such that another author can fill that slot with a new SCP.

Issue: Bright's Contributions to Series

Details: When Bright's works are removed, this will cause issues for series/canons that contained Bright's works — plot holes and dead links will proliferate. As such, series/canon runners should be aware that Bright's works are being removed so that they have time to write them out of their series/canons.
Resolution: For each series/canon to which Bright has contributed, the runner(s) of that series/canon will be contacted, informing them of this proposal, allowing them to respond in advance (by removing dead links and rewriting plot holes etc).

This is Resolved When: All runners of series/canons, to which Bright has contributed to, have been contacted.

Issue: Off-Site Works that Backlink to Bright's Pages / Slot Shock

Details: Many off-site communities link to Bright's works. Since this proposal unlists nearly all of these works, then if nothing else were done after that, none of these links would work as intended. As a result, off-site users who encounter these links and click on them will see empty pages and will be confused as to why they're gone, which might lead them to research information about Bright's works on their own, potentially encountering pro-Bright sources first and opening them up to potential harm as a result.
Resolution: For each newly cleared page slug from a harmful or ambiguously harmful Bright work, a staff member would need to create a page, redirecting to the Bright Note page; this way, users that visit pages that once contained harmful or ambiguously harmful Bright works will learn of the context behind why they were removed instead of just being confused as to why they were removed. The Bright Note page would need to be updated with new information to reflect the actions undertaken by this proposal and Bright's misconduct. This would be done to reduce confusion in users wondering what happened to Bright's works, and also to protect vulnerable users who might attempt to contact Bright.

This is Resolved When: This will be resolved when ALL of the following are true: All harmful or ambiguously harmful Bright works have been replaced with redirects to the Bright Note page and the Bright Note page has been suitably updated.

Issue: Supplementary Pages

Details: There are a few supplement pages authored by Bright which would need to be handled.
Resolution: Document 050 will be unlisted by a staff member with Mod Tools (OS+), as it is a supplement of SCP-050, which will be unlisted. Nothing will need to be done with SCP-902's supplement, as SCP-902 is co-authored. It can remain as-is.

This is Resolved When: Document 050 is unlisted.

Issue: Handling Bright's Harm

Details: The priority with the Bright Works project is to mitigate the harm that Bright has caused and avoid the harm they could cause in the future. In particular, both Bright's status as an influential author on the Wiki and the harmful content of their works granted them influence, allowing them to more effectively find, entice, and prey on victims. This means that the continued existence of Bright's works on the wiki contributes to the harm Bright causes.
Resolution: As this proposal would remove nearly all of Bright's works from the wiki, with the remaining two works obfuscating (SCP-902) or removing (SCP-2000 Contest Hub) Bright's attribution, this proposal would effectively remove Bright's presence from the wiki. As a result, the SCP Wiki would no longer be platforming Bright's predatory behavior.

This is Resolved When: All other issues are resolved.

What Pages are Addressed by This Proposal?

Content Warnings: The following list features mentions of pedophilia, sexual abuse, beastiality and grooming throughout.

Step-By-Step Breakdown:

Note: All provided time frames are rough estimates and are subject to change.

  1. Pre-removal (Approx 14 days)
    • The canon and series runners of collections which contain right works will be contacted, and given a heads up about the process about to take place
    • An updated version of the Bright List page will be drafted, which will address the problems with the content, the harm done, and detail staff's failure to act promptly on this issue
    • An announcement will be drafted with Community Outreach with then intention of alerting users to the changes being made, and removing any confusion which may arise from the sudden disappearance of Bright's body of work
  2. Removal (Approx 1 day)
    • SCP-902 will be reattributed to 'TheDuckMan'
    • The SCP-2000 contest hub will be reattributed to 'Staff'
    • All of Bright's pages, with the exception of SCP-902 and the SCP-2000 contest hub will be unlisted
    • Bright's unlisted pages will recieve a code patch that will prevent non-staff from accessing their content
    • The Bright List page will be edited to display the updated draft of the page
    • Redirects for the noted harmful/ambiguous pages will be instituted
    • The on-site and off-site communities will be made aware of the change

Why This Solution?:

This proposal removes Bright from the wiki, preventing them from using it to platform their predatory behavior.
Despite having been AHT Banned for several years, Bright still relies on their status within the SCP Wiki community to gain influence, as, even though they are widely disliked in the on-site community, the continued existence and popularity of their works gives the impression to many that they are still an acclaimed author. In addition, a majority of their works on the SCP Wiki contain harmful content that normalizes their predatory behavior. Using this influence, Bright is then able to expand their reach and engage in more widespread predatory behavior. This proposal would remove nearly all works attributed to Bright from the wiki, preventing them from platforming themselves using their presence on the wiki. Of the works that are not removed, one will have Bright's attribution removed and the other will be re-attributed to 'TheDuckMan' (Bright's original username) to obfuscate their presence.

By redirecting Bright's most harmful works to an explanation page, we can address the harm that Bright caused and protect vulnerable users.
Removing Bright's pages carries with it the risk of users being confused when they visit them from links on off-site sources. In the worst case, this could result in them searching for what happened to them, only to find pro-Bright off-site sources. By redirecting Bright's most harmful works to an explanation page that explains the harm caused by Bright and why the pages were removed, users will be protected from harmful narratives that may bring them into Bright's orbit, and will reduce the workload on staff, users, and victims alike who would otherwise have to repeatedly explain the removals to other confused, angry users.

By unlisting Bright's works, making them visible only to staff, we maintain a record of evidence.
Bright's works will be removed from public view, but will still be visible to staff. This way, the posts, comments, and edit histories of the pages will still remain as a record of evidence, in case retaining evidence is necessary in future.

This proposal could be accomplished quickly and with little effort.
Outside of drafting the new explanation pages and the social media posts, all steps of this proposal (unlisting Bright's pages, creating redirects, and reattributing two pages) could be completed relatively quickly.

Concerns:

Why unlist the pages as opposed to deleting them?
The primary motivation behind the choice to unlist the pages as opposed to full deletion is to preserve proof of authorship, as well as the discussion pages, since they are evidence tied to Bright's AHT case and are examples of Bright's predatory behavior and their attempts to normalize it on-site. Additionally, retaining a copy of the works will allow future staff and community members to have access to a pool of evidence in the event that legal threats, or related action, require proof of the content that was on the wiki in a manner more reliable then an off-site source (as these typically result in the loss of the discussion page).

The wiki would no longer be a 'single source of truth' on Bright's works, potentially leading to users looking for them off-site where there is no context as to the harm they caused.
Removing Bright's works would hurt the wiki's credibility as a 'single source of truth,' and may cause individuals to seek out this content on other fan sites which many not contain the same warnings about why the author of the works is harmful, potentially exposing them to harm. However, maintaining redirects to the Bright list message in the the slugs that contained Bright's most harmful works should help prevent this harm.

Some desirable SCP slots will be freed up for use, resulting in arguments over who can claim them; however, removing Bright's influence is more important.
As articles deemed not to have harmful or harmful content will have their slugs opened up, this could create a rush for community members to claim those slots, which could lead to inter-community issues/arguments. While only 9 of Bright's SCP articles have been found by staff to not contain harmful or questionable content, 7 of those slots are in Series 1, a Series who's slots are usually considered particularly desirable. However, removing any authorship-conferred legitimacy Bright has on the site is more important than arguments about who gets to claim what slot.

Broken backlinks will be created. However, this is less important than removing Bright's influence.
Mass-unlisting Brights pages will create many broken backlinks, however, due to the content and history of these articles, removing them is more important than preserving those backlinks. This issue could also feasibly be addressed by further effort on a later date.

Given the popularity of Bright's works off-site, this proposal will not accommodate them. However, this is less important than removing Bright's influence from the site.
This proposal does not accommodate off-site fans, given the relative popularity of Bright's works there compared to on-site. As our priority is harm reduction, and harm reduction requires we remove Bright's works from the site, removing these pages is more important than preventing the inter-community issues that may result from the removal of these pages. Additionally, staff will be working with Community Outreach to draft an announcement about the changes taking place, which will hopefully prevent some of this conflict.

Final Summary:

Nearly all of Bright's works will be removed from the SCP Wiki. This will be accomplished by unlisting them, which will make them impossible for regular users to see, while still allowing staff to view them as a record of evidence. The only exceptions are SCP-902, whose attribution will change from 'AdminBright' to 'TheDuckMan' (Bright's original username); and the SCP-2000 Contest Hub, which will be re-attributed to 'Staff'.

After being unlisted, all works marked as 'harmful' or 'ambiguous' will be replaced with redirects to an updated version of the Bright List Deletion Message; all remaining unlisted works will have their slots freed up so that other users can replace them. In addition, CO will announce the removals and the reasoning for them on social media.

Work for specific staff teams:

  • Technical Team
    • Implement code for replacing all instances of 'AdminBright' with 'TheDuckMan'.
  • Community Outreach
    • Prepare and eventually post statements on social media about the removal of Bright's works and the reasoning for doing so;
    • Support AHT in updating the Bright List Deletion Message.
  • Anti-Harassment Team
    • Update the Bright List Deletion Message.
  • Ambassadors:
    • Advising INT about which pages have been deleted and why.
