Q: Can I make a film adaptation of the SCP Foundation?
A: Yes. Your film will have to be licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license, version 3.0 or higher.
Q: What does that mean?
A: If you want legal advice, please ask an IP lawyer or other qualified legal professional. The informal answer is that it means anyone in the world would be able to redistribute your film, for free or otherwise, provided they also followed the terms of the license.
Q: How could we make money, then?
A: It wouldn't be easy. You could crowdfund it in advance, using something like Kickstarter. For something on the scale of a major motion picture it just might not be possible at all.
Q: Can we negotiate a deal to have an exception to your license, under more favorable terms?
A: No. We do not have the legal ability to negotiate an exception. No one person or group of people owns copyright to enough of the shared universe to own such a deal.
Q: Okay, what if we make a movie about the SCR Institute, which is totally not the same thing as the SCP Foundation?
A: We have every bit as much right to defend our authors' copyright as companies like Nintendo or Disney. While our license is relatively permissive, anyone who violates it loses ALL rights to use any of our or our authors' intellectual property. We can, will, and have defended ourselves and our authors in such cases.
