People tend not to miss by more than one key, and he's saying he's 16 here and 19 in his wikidot profile; the inconsistency betrays the lie.

While I'd allow the Jan 1 birthday as possible, I find it highly suspicious that someone is giving 3 different ages. Even if it was a "typo," and they meant to say 16, they're still lying about their age, since their wikidot profile says they're 19.

He may have lied on his Wikidot profile to bypass age gates for people under 18. Not saying it speaks to a greater degree of general honesty, but I doubt any of us haven't done that on one website or another.

I dunno. He's offering a semi-reasonable answer and he seems coherent and well-mannered, and at worst he's a matter of months away from the age minimum. I'd hate to waste even kickban list space on him.

Applied to the wiki today as MaelRadecs does not match any existing user name, claiming to be 16 years old. Put a block on him with notes as per this thread.

edit: So, does all this count as ban evasion? I mean, he knows he's banned and he just. keeps. trying. to. get. in. Isn't that usually cause for upgrade to permaban? Or does this guy's relative politeness earn him one more explanation and one more chance before the hammer comes down?

I'm pretty sure this is ban evasion (plus, he still has that wikidot birthdate that would make his "age" 19). Thing is, I get the feeling that they're too excited to join the site (he's got a CB account) to fully acknowledge the gravity of their actions thus far.

Why not tell him that he's got 6 months to wait until he can apply, and if he tries to ban evade before that time, it's a perma?

Keep in mind that Mael had not previously been specifically told that the wiki had the same age limit as the chat. Most of what he's done has been joining #site17, which is not itself illegitimate, and applying to the wiki while underage, which could be just not reading the guides correctly. Combined with the fact that he seems relatively intelligent yet made the least possible effort to disguise his new username, and then drew attention to himself yet again in #site17, and I'm still sensing unfortunate misunderstanding rather than malicious evasion.

Supporting Zyn's suggestion: tell them to wait six months to reapply and make no attempt to rejoin or reapply before then on pain of permaban.

I can get behind Zyn's suggested solution, yes. If I see the guy again, I'll explain matters (all our age limits, the six-month minimum, the nature and unacceptability of ban evasion) and warn him gently but firmly.

Just for the record, though, Mael has repeatedly tried to reenter #site19, including under a couple different names. I don't have logs — Procyon, did you say you did? — but I did see at least one of those happen. Applying to the wiki and joining 17 aren't problematic, but that kinda was. Nothing to act on; I just wanted to make a note.

I actually don't think ban evasion must be an automatic ban, just can be. In other words, yes, it's cause, but it's not mandated.
