I recently got a PM from a site member:

Hello Zyn,

I have a bit of an unusual request. I’ve been enjoying contributing to the Foundation immensely, but honestly I’ve been getting more involved than my current life circumstances and deadlines really allow. Would it be possible for me to get banned from the mainsite until February 1st?

I sent them back a PM saying that I would ask other staff members since we don't have a precedent for non-disc bans on the mainsite the same way we do on chat. I also asked them to confirm that they'd stick with the ban. Here's the reply:

Thank you for considering! At this point I'm content with how my latest SCP looks and if I have any further ideas, I can jot them down in my sandbox. So, I believe I will stick with a ban if it's implemented.

I personally feel like if we do allow non-disc mainsite bans, they should be relatively lengthy and recorded in a single place somewhere so we can lift them on time, and we should be firm on the implementation (e.g., no sudden changes of mind in the middle).

I'm not certain if we need to have these sorts of bans though. Thoughts?

Eh. Seems like a real niche thing, given that this is really the first time this has been asked for in nearly 10 years.

If it's not too much of an inconvenience on the people who will be managing it, sure, why not. However, I don't really think we should be going too far out of the way on this.

You can just rescind your own membership from the wiki, so I don't see why we should take any action apart from telling them to go do that.

…not naming names here, but just noting that the user in question recently re-applied to the site. I've declined the application given their previously expressed wishes. Bit odd though.

It looks like the wiki team (quite rightfully) declined my re-request to join, based on my earlier expressed wishes. Upon reflection, I think it’s a bit silly to ask the site team to keep track of self-ban requests at all. I would guess that self-revoking and reapplying is probably the logistically easier solution for everybody, and that I should just be responsible for my own actions here.

This is the exact failure mode that you didn’t want to have to deal with, and I am truly sorry. Probably the best way to avoid this in the future is for me to just not involve the admins at all in this sort of thing.

Long-winded way of saying I regret rescinding my membership, and hope to reinforce further breaks from the wiki with my own willpower, rather than asking any of y’all to get involved as admins. I’ll be re-sending a membership request in a moment, and I hope I haven’t caused any inconvenience.
