Promotions to Senior Staff

This is the April Senior Staff Promotion Thread.

Note: This thread is not for recommendations. If you feel that someone should be up for promotion, please PM me so I can add them to my list. This list is based off of the most popular suggestions for promotions among current staff members and site members.

This is still not a perfect process, but we've made some progress. Promotion requires a 2/3rd majority. Currently, we are staring down the barrel of the following promotions:

To Senior Staff: Zyn, Soulless, Vezaz

For each user you vote NO for, the administration would like to strongly encourage you to explain your reasons why. These people are obviously popular choices, or they wouldn't be there, so explaining your objections is the surest way to help them overcome the problems you see them having and aid them in becoming a choice you would support.

Important: If you would "neutral vote" for someone, please instead vote No. If they haven't made a strong enough impression on you that you would vote yes, then they don't need to be a staff member. People who insist on neutral voting will have their votes counted as negatives.

My denial reason for vez are… well, it's an odd one. I just think he wants it TOO much, y'know? I like to see people who are eager to do the job, but the impression i get from him is that he wants the position more then he actually wants to help people. I know the other two would keep on helping people if they weren't promoted, but… I don't know if vezaz would.

Soulless… This one isn't a case where he's done anything wrong, he just hasn't made a strong enough impression on me as someone who should be staff. Voting no this time, but it's not a strong aversion. Just not strongly enough for it.

Vez, I just don't think you're quite ready yet. The rage quit makes me a little edgy. And while you've done better, I'm not sure you're quite at the level I want to see in Senior Staff yet. Not to say that you couldn't get past it, I just want to see more. Show me why you should be Senior Staff. Show me why you'd be enough of an asset to take the risk on you.

1000% yes to Zyn. She already does all the stuff we've agreed staff should do with regard to critique, greeting people, and generally being helpful. She also "got" the site pretty much from Day 1 and is one of our better writers.

Soulless doesn't write a lot of stuff, but gives good, kind of quirky (I mean that as a compliment) feedback.

I don't have anything against Vezaz, but he hasn't made the kind of impression on me that I need to say "YES"…therefore I have to say "NO".

Us senior staff keep getting confused and forgetting that Zyn isn't already staff. So do regular site members. And her reputation is thoroughly deserved. She has passion, drive, and skill, and she's extremely helpful. Plus her portfolio is notoriously good (yes, "notorious" at this point). This is an instance where someone is already unofficially staff in the eyes of the community, and we're just acknowledging it.

Soulless has been a superb member for a very long time now. Similarly to Zyn, he's active, helpful, and widely respected by the community - made more remarkable given his shaky start way back when. And has a great portfolio too. A longtime veteran whose time has come.

As for Vezaz… I like Vezaz, but he hasn't made a strong enough impression on me to be sure, and his activity level isn't quite where I'd like it to be, especially on the wiki (can't speak for chat because in recent weeks I've not been able to sign on as much as I'd like, but he seems to be online at least). And like Zyn & Soulless, his portfolio is high-quality. But because of Troy's odious "no neutral votes" rules, I am forced to vote no. But I would not be exactly averse to his promotion, FWIW… I just can't currently specifically support it.

Zyn has been doing the duties of Senior Staff for far too long; it's time she actually gets the position.

Soulless consistently gives good feedback, writes good stuff, and just generally would do an all-around good job.

Vezaz…is a good guy, who writes good stuff, but…when it came for this decision, I just kept vacillating back and forth on him. As I said, on the one hand, I really like his work, and he's a constant presence in chat, but on the other hand…I just cannot forget that premature exit he had a while back. I know it's all done and finished now, but I just don't feel secure enough at this juncture to vote him into the SS position.

The hesitation I have, though, with saying this is that I just don't know how one proves one's responsibility after a rage quit like that. It just comes back to the question of "how much is enough?" and that's a question I don't have an answer to. I feel like know that refusing to vote "yes" for somebody without providing a guide for their improvement is wrong, but in this case I really can't think of actual, solid advice for how to remedy this situation, (other than what's in the next paragraph,) no matter how much I would like to give some.

But vezaz, please, stick around. Your behavior post-exit has been good, good enough to erase most of the doubt I had, but it just hasn't been enough. Maybe it's only me that feels this way (god knows, it's plausible enough, and I'll be very surprised if I don't get a post from somebody else in some form telling me in the nicest of terms why I'm wrong), but I just do not have the confidence in you yet.

So I guess that's what this wall of text boils down to-time. Stick around more. Prove you can do it. That's what I need from you before I can feel confident in making you Senior Staff, and that's something only you (and the clock) can provide.

Yes to Zyn and Soulless because I feel their input in Staff Chat is positive and they have different viewpoints on a lot of things and that could be useful in the future.

Neutral on vezaz because if I'm going to be utterly honest I don't see him nearly enough in chat to even have a gauge on his personality.

Pretty much what everyone else has already said. Vezaz is almost there, but you said no neutral votes. *shrug*

Edit: On reflection, I think that vezaz is ready.

Also, I'd honestly forgotten about him quitting/returning, but I wouldn't call that a ragequit since he didn't flounce or anything. He just pulled his articles and left quietly, then decided to return at a later time, and reposted them.

I hadn't forgotten Vezaz ragequit. It was just long enough ago that it honestly didn't matter to me. It didn't affect my vote. and, you know, he came back.

And he did leave entirely without drama (minus deleting all his SCPs) and return entirely without drama. I'm not sure that's fairly characterized as a "ragequit", though I realize that the fact that he did it out of nowhere with little provocation and no explanation is also iffy.

Anyway, while I do understand why others would find this seriously iffy, I don't think it's at all an insurmountable black mark and I don't really understand why others feel that's the case.

Not sure if that last part is meant to apply to me, but I'd like to take this time to reaffirm what I was saying:

I do not see the premature exit as a permanent black mark against vezaz. Instead, I see it as an important factor in my decision-making and an indicator of the reasons I do not feel confident voting vezaz into the Senior Staff position.

This isn't some kind of grudge that I, personally, will hold forever; instead, it serves as a representation of the reservations I have towards vezaz.

What Jekeled said. Basically, I find "serious iffiness" to be enough to disqualify someone from my vote for SS. Unless he does something that impresses the hell out of me, that's not changing.

Zyn's the most deserving person for promotion I can think of. She's constantly providing helpful criticism and welcoming new members, is always civil and polite, a great writer, and extremely easy and pleasant to work with in general.

Soulless' have written some very impressive things and has a very distinct style, which I quite enjoy. That, and his pleasant demeanor and critic style, makes him a good candidate in my book.

As for Vezaz, there isn't much to say other than what was already said. His behavior has been mostly solid, but a few slips here and there, plus his aforementioned exit, makes me unsure that he's right for the job right now. If he continues on his current route, however, I can certainly see myself voting yes next time.

I wasn't aware of Vezaz' rage-quit episode, so I can't hold it against him unless I get more information on it, but I also don't have the same confidence about his potential that I do for Zyn's and Soulless'. That's largely due to my own absence, but it's still no better than a neutral vote for now.

I honestly feel like all the reasons I could have given for these decisions have been given by those above me, so I'm just going to reiterate what they said. Zyn is essentially staff, Soul is a superb member, Vezaz needs more experience and good behavior.

Zyn has been spectacular from day 1, and as others have noted, she's already been doing things staff do….most importantly, doing them without any expectation of being made staff, nor acting as though she had more authority than she did. I'd trust her at any level of staff more than anyone that comes to mind who isn't already staff.

Soulless has had this coming for a long time. Awesome feedback, awesome writing, and generally trying to be a voice of reason where possible. Always shows concern for the site and questions things that others don't even think to question sometimes. A+, would have voted for staff a year ago.

Vezaz….maybe someday, but as it stands I've not seen much from him that would make me want him specifically. I don't have any real issues with him, but he's not one I would've thought of to promote just yet.
