To elaborate for those who weren't present, there was a conversation going on about/with a newbie who'd forgotten to include the password in his wiki application. Then this happened:

There is no problem with privilege coming up as a matter of course in normal conversation. I'm actually somewhat annoyed that we're even having a discussion about this. ;P

I am not sure where this question is going, but either way, no one in this thread nor in dealing with bt have been bringing up any specific type of privilege, and I don't think we planned to.

I've only seen the word on troll threads and Social Justice tumblers where someone screams "Check your privilege hetero/male/cis/etc, etc scum". Never actually seen it used seriously outside of a few heavily biased journalism pieces.
Ahhh. Well, none of us want to condone that. Suffice to say, though, that yes, it's been used seriously a-plenty in non-troll areas. I suppose it just depends on what parts of the Web you hang out on. I suppose if you've only seen it in troll threads, then I can understand the confusion. But again, anyone pulls out that kind of thing and we'll deal with it the way we deal with all trolling.

Saying "check your privilege", outside of a humorous or trolling or drama-baiting context, means "your perspective as a X might mean that you're unaware that other groups struggle with issues like Y." [Or of how much, or the nature of Y, or whatever.] It originates as a phrase meant to be used between people who already know what is meant by "privilege". (Otherwise, we'd just use that phrase.) Essentially, it's a shorthand. I've used it myself, though of course I wouldn't use that phrase outside of contexts where people understand what I mean by it. You know. Like on this website. (Though I am perfectly willing to discuss the concept, of course.)
When the phrase "check your privilege" is used in other contexts besides the one I just mentioned, it is almost exclusively employed as a trolling technique to start a whirlwind of drama, and occasionally as an excuse to scream at people to either stop mentioning privilege ever again, or to scream at them for having privilege. And/or as a joke about social justice tumblrs. Of these reasons, only the last is tolerable.

If I understand this correctly: I'm taking Drewbear at his word that this phrase was used totally out of any discernible context. If so, I would be extremely surprised if this wasn't an attempt to start drama. At best it's cluelessness - whether a genuinely meant clueless question, or an attempt at genuine humor - but in context of previous annoying shit this user pulled, I'm not willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.
What Moose said. I've seen logical, non-inflammatory conversations about privilege in several places, and they can go fairly smoothly and be informative. But those've always been in spaces where most/all people already knew what was meant by "privilege", even if only to disagree with the concept. #19 and the SCP Wiki in general are not spaces that fit that criterion. (No judgment there, just a statement of fact)
And yeah, bt's comment was totally out of the blue. I'd been in #19 for at least an hour at that point and s/he hadn't typed anything in that time, and like I said, the convo was focused on this newbie's application failure. There weren't even any side-conversations going on. Even IF bt wasn't trying to troll, it was a grossly inappropriate attempt to hijack the conversation

This. I wasn't there for the bit of chat in question, but I agree that it's difficult at best to have a serious, meaningful discussion about privilege and other social justice issues unless everybody involved is already on the same page about what X means.
