User Nightsmaiden for the past few days has been going through old SCPs and tales and changing instances of "amnesiac" to "amnestic". While also doing general grammar cleanup here and there as well, I sent them a PM asking them to stop changing things to amnestic, but they've continued making the edits.

My PM:

I would like to ask that you stop changing the wording in older SCPs from Amnesiac to Amnestic. Amnesiac is an artifact from the site's older days and shouldn't be changed. It was decided a fairly long time ago that while Amnesiac isn't the correct term, it was considered a stylistic choice and can't be changed in articles without the author's approval. You are always free to PM the author and ask for permission to change the wording, but please do not do so until you've gotten the OK from them.

I've been reverting all their changes, but I may have missed a few.

I'd say we give them a little time, in case they haven't seen my PM, before moving to disc action. So if they're still making the amnesiac/amnestic changes in a day or so, we should bump this forward to disc.

Hm. Okay, just noticed this. Will comply. I was not aware that this was a disapproved behavior, partly because some of the earliest articles do use the term amnestic; I was assuming it was essentially a typo. My apologies.

Is there a readily available source for information about which terminology has been determined to be of historical significance and thus correct in old articles but not in new ones? My usual habit with wikis is to copyedit rather than making major changes, and I recall something about minor terminology and grammar edits being acceptable in the initial burst of informational pages for new members. I wasn't intending to alter things in an inappropriate manner.

I suppose it's at least good that I documented what I was doing.

Yes, from the second tab of the FAQ, a required guide:

What's the correct spelling: amnesic, amnestic, or amnesiac?

The correct spellings are "amnesic" and "amnestic". "Amnesiac" means "a person who has amnesia".

Note: A few older authors have chosen to keep the old spelling. Please don't fix the error yourself if you see it; ask staff to take a look instead.
