Winter Promotions.

These are votes of confidence. If you are unfamiliar or on the fence about someone, vote NO. Only vote yes if the candidate has your confidence and genuinely feels ready for promotion in your mind.

Please post even if you are abstaining from voting. You may not abstain selectively. If you want to say YES for some and abstain from others, vote NO for those you are unsure of. A special note before we begin. I was asked by several non-Captain members if they could input commentary or make recommendations for this round of promotions. I didn’t see an issue with this, since we’re kinda tight on people and I don’t see why we can’t have outside commentary. This time, I’ll allow it, simply because the admins had a ton of discussion about how we need new staff this time around. These recommendations will be marked in the “Team” slot of the chart, with “Special Commentator” instead of “Team”.

Review	DrBleep has been a dedicated member of my Wikiwalk team, being a good source of crosslinks, as well as a great person to bounce ideas off of with respect to Wikiwalking. I doubt we would be currently on list two at the current time had Bleep not joined the team. An example of one of DrBleep's best crosslinks would be found HERE. An example of one of DrBleep's more recent crosslinks can be found HERE.
Optional Commentary	DrBleep goes through bursts of high activity followed by lowered activity on a semi-regular basis. I'd ideally like to see this behavior a little more reigned in should she be promoted to OS.

Team Name:	Forum Criticism / Butterfly Squad (Captain Zyn)
Review	fieldstone is incredibly patient and friendly, and honestly a pretty great role model for all of Forum Crit. He’ll post thoughtful, balanced comments in the forums for open discussion (such as this post regarding the Fukushu hub), and will give solid advice in the writing forums (recent example here). He’s also great with a variation on the standard line-by-line, more of a “chunk by chunk”, which focuses on overarching comments rather than minutiae: link here.
Optional Commentary:	Not really a weakness, but I would like to see him hang out in #thecritters a bit more often if possible. Also, again not really a weakness, but I know he’s got work and family so we need to remember to be reasonable with the availability expectations.

Team Name:	WikiWalk (Captain Jacob Conwell)
Review	I have no doubt in my mind that I would have burnt out on the Wikiwalk had M_E not swooped in and rocked to house. He's surpassed me in speed of crosslink proposals, all of which are of high quality, and his understanding of various articles is near encyclopedic. All around a great junior staffer and someone I'm sure will be a great OS. For and example of M_E's more recent work see HERE. For an example of M_E's more noteworthy crosslinks see HERE.
Optional Commentary	M_E is currently, by my count, on several teams as a JS. I worry they may spread themselves a little thin and burn out, as is not unknown to happen. They seem to have a pretty good handle on things at the current time, though.

Team Name:	Forum Criticism / Butterfly Squad (Captain Zyn)
Review	M_E is extremely well-read when it comes to wiki material (example here where reading suggestion links are given for the author’s reference) and gives excellent conceptualization feedback (example here). He’s also done a wonderful job helping to mentor some new Junior Staff for Forum Crit, plus he also curates both the official MTF list (link here) and the unofficial master list, which aren’t Forum Crit-related, but are very impressive nonetheless.
Optional Commentary:	Overwork, I suppose. M_E is on a couple teams and has a fair number of IRL commitments, so I do worry from time to time about him getting overwhelmed.

Contributions to the Wiki and teams:	ChaoSera has been pivotal in helping the technical team get established as more effective, and fluid operation. Additionally, he's level headed in most situations, especially when the wiki is concerned.
Optional Section:	My only concern is his habit of defending problem users who are his friend, especially when they're being disruptive. I don't see it on the wiki, only in chat, but it does come up.

Contributions to the Wiki and teams:	I think we've all seen ChaoSera be reliable, here consistently, and working consistently. He seems to have a level head on his shoulders and pays attention to problematic behavior.

He's always very thoughtful and respectful when he does things. He's very active in chat and on the forums, and I believe his opinions on staff, site, and policy matters are thorough and well considered.

Contributions to the Wiki and teams:	Magnus does a lot of tech work, is readily accessible in chat, and runs Helen/works with bots. He’s also a great person to work with and very responsible, and honestly I think everyone’s been expecting this because he’s put a lot of time and effort into improving the site already.
Optional Section:	He knows a lot about swords and will call out bad sword SCPs, it’s great.

Aside from future projects, he's also an extremely dedicated worker. He created the new tag search feature, he's helped with the sidebar designs, and he created Helen. He's a great worker and very mature. I know he's wholly dedicated to making sure the site is successful, and the site would only benefit from him being a moderator.

Optional Section:	Since his promotion to head of Tech after LurkD's departure, DrMagnus has hit the ground running with managing the site timers, setting up the Helen bot, and what I imagine is a fair amount of the behind the scenes work we don't see to help keep the wiki afloat. I feel offering him a modship is not only fitting of his contributions to the Wiki, but also would be beneficial for someone of his rank on the Tech Team.

Contributions to the Wiki and teams:	From the time I've taken over the technical team, I feel we've operated with efficiency, and a focus on solving problems. Project Foundation is open, at least in a cursory way, and the team's objectives and projects are clear, as well as direction. My only real obstacle is when we need to move things to the main wiki, I don't have moderator power to unlock pages, which leads to speedbumps. It also leads to the awkward place of one of the people under me being a moderator, and I am not.
Optional Section:	It's been brought to my attention, by at least one user, that I come off as overly-vehement in chat, in SSSC regarding problem users. This is completely true, however, I would like to make very clear that a users behavior has never influenced how I deal with them as a staff member. I've assisted people I can't stand on a deeply personal level with Technical Issues, and given crit and advice to the selfsame members. Staff!Magnus and Writer/User!Magnus are separate people and I keep it that way.

Contributions to the Wiki and teams:	Leveritas has helped me a lot behind-the-scenes for Forum Crit, keeping me updated on the state of the forums and notifying me of potential problem users to keep an eye on. (And generally keeping me sane.) His response time for problem threads is pretty good, and I’d really like for him to be able to help collapsing full drafts posted, trimming down thread descriptions that break the forum listing, locking problem threads, and so on.
Optional Section:	Recently, he’s been swamped in IRL work, so his activity level isn’t as high as in previous months. Please keep that in mind when considering him for mod.

She's constantly doing site maintenance (staff posting, deletion votes, logging incidents) and runs a very clean ship when it comes to chat. She has a good head on her shoulders, and I feel she's mature enough to do well in the position

Contributions to the Wiki and teams:	Randomini has a talent for quickly figuring out where to look when technical stuff goes wrong on the wiki. He has a great understanding of both wikidot syntax and the many quirks that make using wikidot the pain in the ass that it is and he's been active and dedicated to the wiki for a long time. Additionally, he's consistently active at a time where usually no other mod or admin is online, which is a very important part in my book since there's been quite a lot instances recently where there was some issue to resolve on early EU/late AU hours where nobody from the US was online.

Contributions to the Wiki and teams:	It's tuomey motherfucking tombstone 'nuff said. Tuomey is one of the longest standing and dedicated staff members and his commitment to the wiki is unparalleled. There's no better person I can think of to have the power and responsibility of a moderator.

I end up helping out mostly with whatever happens to be the currently discussed issue in #sssc at the times I'm on and I'm basically always pingable/messagable for anything that needs to get done immediately. As far as deciding policy goes, my record with dealing with chat is known enough and I wrote the donations policy as requested by DrMann. Additionally, I am undertaking a course I believe will allow me to help greatly with the undertaking of PF and the tech team captain is in agreement. Contributions to the Wiki and teams:	Zachary has a unique blend of calm and alertness that results in him being able to notice issues in the forums that I miss. He’s helped out a lot in the past notifying me of problem threads that go unaddressed, and will make clear posts to alert other forum-goers of threads that are duplicates or the like. He also takes the time to explain how the site works to new authors who coldpost low-rated works that tend to go overlooked otherwise.

NO idea if this is the correct venue for this BUT ChaoSera, Taffeta, and Lily have been excellent chat operators thus far, demonstrating a good ability to handle issues or hand them off when necessary, with a willingness to do the grunt work of logging/adding to the list etc that shows the sort of necessary work ethic and understanding of How Things Work that I believe is good for a moderator. This includes a considered approach to ban/policy votes and discussions - perhaps the most crucial issue in promoting someone to a level where they will influence policy more.

Of course, I can't currently vote in that particular poll, but I would vote for them. TL;DR: I don't know if chat admins can recommend people similarly to team captains but Lily, Taffeta, and Chao are Yes.

EDIT: Additionally, I can attest to Lily's work on the tumblr and Chao has been working well within tech team. I know less of Taffeta's staff work.

I voted NO on Bleep and moklin due to the fact that I haven't seen much crosslink contribution out of Bleep in recent times and I'm unfamiliar with moklin's work as a staff member. fieldstone, ghostchibi and Modern_Erasmus are all fine picks for OS; fieldstone is an incredibly capable critter, ghostchibi a longstanding and invaluable help on the tunglers and M_E a hardworking and super dedicated staff member.

A brief, valueless opinion on the Mod candidates:

Strongly approve of most everyone on that list. Magnus has an insane work ethic and drive and has proven very personable despite a workload that would have reduced me to a gibbering mush. ChaoSera is calm, friendly and a consistently helpful presence on Tech Team, which I'm glad is seeing more representation today. Randomini kind of needs the power of mod to be the best codegremlin they can be, but I'd argue they deserve it even discounting that. Tuomey is as rock-solid as his namesake and is an all-round top bloke.

Lily and Zach I'm more hesitant towards, mainly because the process feels a little rushed. Still, I think they're both very capable members of staff and feel they'd be good for the role. Zach in particular I've been very supportive of in past promotion rounds, though ily2 Comrade Lils.

Onto the elephant in the room: I'm… honestly unsure why I'm on this list. My critting duties have fallen by the wayside thanks to a couple of persistent mental health issues which have stopped me from putting in the time with crit that I was once able to, and my work on Tech Team is almost non-existent compared to a lot of other members. I'm not disinterested in the role necessarily and if the promotion comes I'll take it; I just want the rest of staff to have a more accurate picture of the State of the Aiden Nation, as it were.

THOUGHTS:

DrBleep: No. Her body of WikiWalk work is still far too small for me to recommend promoting her.
fieldstone: Yes. He's done good work for both Forum Crit and (in the small time he's been on) Community Outreach. Additionally, he's shown initiative and drive by taking on extra CO responsibilities that I had not asked him to.
ghostchibi: Yes. I've watched him wrangle all of the Official Foundation Tumblrs and have interacted with him enough to be comfortable with promoting him.
Modern_Erasmus: Yes. While I haven't interacted with him a lot, I trust Conwell and Zyn's combined judgment and am pleased with the initiative he's shown in maintaining the MTF lists.
moklin: No. I've seen behavior from Moklin that makes me hesitate to entrust him with operational powers and his vexillography skills aren't enough to make me reconsider.

THOUGHTS:
Blaroth: No. Roth has posted on the site exactly three times since last July. Coupled with her infrequent chat presence, I cannot support promoting her to modship simply because of her perceived seniority.
Chaosera: Yes. ChaoSera has the maturity and level-headedness essential for modship. Plus, if he's been as useful to Tech Team as Magnus says, then making him a mod will make his - and our own - job easier.
DrMagnus: Yes. As the leader of Tech Team, Magnus has contributed a huge deal to the functioning of the wiki. While I'm wary of some of his behavior in chat, the extreme separation he self-enforces between his chat and site behavior makes me comfortable elevating him to a position of power on the site that will make his job - and by extension our own - much easier.
Leveritas: No. I do't have any strong opinion one way or the other, so it defaults to a negative vote.
LilyFlower: No. I like Lily, but she has some issues with temper and for now I see no particular reason to elevate her based solely on the Licensing and maintenance duties she's been running.
Randomini: Yes. Randomini is a good tech team member, a calm and rational member of staff, and his upside-down hours will fill a useful gap in the staff timezone distribution.
Taffeta: No. I like Taffeta, but by their own admission they've been unable to put in as much work as they want to due to ex. I also fail to see any reason to elevate them, similar to Blaroth.
Tuomey Tombstone: Tombstone is a good Chadmin - however, his attention is mostly relegated to Chat anyways
Zachary Maxwell: No. In mid-December, they declared that they were leaving the site - less than four hours later, they edited their leaving page as if nothing had happened. I'm incredibly wary of this given the problems that we've had with former staff who exhibited similar behavior, and as such am not comfortable elevating Zachary to mod status yet.

I don't want to be rude but I feel pure site/chat face time is a completely absurd reason to vote against someone. Roth has been a loyal and active member of staff for years now and she's easily putting in just as much if not more work being our community manager. Every quality one would desire in a moderator, Roth possesses. She is adroit in crisis management, she knows how to deal with people and has a better finger on the pulse of the greater community than probably anybody else on staff. In fact, I would say that makes her judgement even more valuable. She brings an outside perspective not confined to the biases and preconceived notions held by us who hang out in chat quite often. Additionally, our most revered, skilled and important Administrator in the entire history of the site, TroyL, probably spent an equivalent amount of time as Roth in chat and on the wiki during portions of his tenure, but I don't think anybody would consider that to have been detrimental to his ability to lead us. So vote against her if you think that her skills and experience are not meritorious enough to qualify promotion to Moderator, but to just dismiss her candidacy out of hand because she's not put enough face time in the venues you pay attention to is dismissive and highly disrespectful.

So vote against her if you think that her skills and experience are not meritorious enough to qualify promotion to Moderator, but to just dismiss her candidacy out of hand because she's not put enough face time in the venues you pay attention to is dismissive and highly disrespectful.

TroyL also devoted a huge amount of time to leading staff and the site by weighing in on various issues, organizing contests and promotions, enacting emergency bans, and moderating and administrating the site in general. I'm sure that Blaroth is a huge part of our offsite presence, but moderators also need to have a strong onsite presence - whether that be through the wiki or chat - and Blaroth simply doesn't have that.

I will gladly discuss this with you further in chat, but for now let's avoid clogging up the promotions thread any further.

Additionally, our most revered, skilled and important Administrator in the entire history of the site, TroyL, probably spent an equivalent amount of time as Roth in chat and on the wiki during portions of his tenure, but I don't think anybody would consider that to have been detrimental to his ability to lead us.

To clarify, he did this because he was extremely active behind the scenes, he was reasonably active in chat unless on personal break, and he was involved in almost every major O5 decision (whether he posted directly or not).

Back when he was promoted to moderator, he was exceptionally active on both the chat and site.

I'm not commenting one way or another on Blaroth, who I like. I'd already planned to abstain from this vote simply because I'm unfamiliar with some of the staff through no fault of their own.

A small recommendation, though: in the case of an offsite team like Internet Outreach, I would personally look at the post history for O5 Command, not the SCP wiki. A moderator position does indicate a position of potential leadership; part of this would necessitate communicating regularly with fellow staff on site and chat, not simply their Team Captain.

But one can also vote based on expected behavior in the future, not just current behavior.

• DrBleep: I like Bleep, but I don't think she does enough as JS, or would have the time to put into being OS, so it's a no for now.
• fieldstone: Whilst I don't know much of fieldstone their crit seems good and I trust Zyn's judgement well.
• ghostchibi: ghostchibi has been around for a long time, and is doing fantastic work on IO. I'm more than sure they'll make good OS.
• Modern_Erasmus: M_E obviously cares a lot about the site and is very active as JS. He's definately deserving of promotion to OS.
• moklin: moklin is doing well at looking after the facebook, but I don't think he's quite mature enough to be OS just yet.

Bleep's intermittent activity isn't as much of a dealbreaker for me as it seems to be for others and I've seen them provide solid feedback; other than that, concurring with the commentary of previous voters.

(As an aside for mod voting consideration: based on the recently compiled list, all active mods and admins are active in timezones between GMT-5 and GMT-8. I recommend considering this with regards to the promotion of Tuomey (GMT), Lily (GMT), ChaoSera (GMT+1), Taffeta (GMT+10) and I (GMT+10) so that the site has greater mod coverage. (In fact, all mods currently up for nomination are in non-american timezones except Magnus, though I preference those mentioned here as candidates that might be pushed over the fence by the factor of availability.) I've often had to tell users in the past that there's nothing I can do to fix their problem until America wakes up - and while thankfully spam and abusive posts in these hours are less common, it also takes more time for them to be resolved due to the availability gap.)

((and ideally we should all, y'know, defendably be considered upstanding and competent staffmembers even without this consideration))

Bleep is a good egg, I'm amazed chibi and Erasmus aren't already OS, don't know who fieldstone is so can't say yes and moklin has done a fantastic job of holding down the fort on Facebook while I had a bit of an absence.

Bleep, Fieldstone, and M_E's captain reviews (plus the lack of any real concerns surrounding these users) all make me say yes. Ghostchibi has been here for a long time and has consistently been willing to put in a good degree of work, and his work on the tumblr I've seen for myself.

Moklin I don't know that well, and his review doesn't tell me how he'd handle the increased purview of OS. I am willing to revisit this over the voting time if a broader review is posted - my concerns are dedication, and generally handling community management. Making icons is cool, but without further information about the process behind it I'm not sure how much dedication went into it.

DrBleep: I'm not too familiar with their work, but the captain's review gives me a tentative yes.

fieldstone: Does good work on crit and CO.

ghostchibi: Has done excellent work on the serious tumblr. I haven't been as active on the serious one since college started up, I mostly just answer a few asks now and then and help answer the crazy amount we get on the silly one. They have edited the theme, links, and FAQ multiple times to make it all easier to read and navigate. No complaints.

Modern_Erasmus: Good crit and good captain review.

Moklin: This promotion vote is just happening at the wrong time. I feel like they do good work, but I just want to see them perform a bit more as JS before I'm comfortable promoting them. I'd probably vote yes next time.

I don't think we can afford to spurn the help of any of these great users. All of them have dedicated their lives to the site, and with our current drought of staff we should feel lucky to have a slate of candidates we really shouldn't have any reason not to trust.
