opal(tnaruatser.barkytsurk.eht.ta.tae|h#tnaruatser.barkytsurk.eht.ta.tae|h) AKA wowaname (bunch of different hosts, all some variation of swen.reppiv|ecnO#swen.reppiv|ecnO) is a persistent botspammer who has been polluting a bunch of channels for the last several days, in particular Origins. They popped up in #site81 with this gem (r-slur warning):

Considering their botspamming of literally every channel of every user who has ever been in #site17 or #site19, operators unanimously decided to perma. They showed up in 17 and 19 but I banned them there too.

Noting that my conversation with the user was fairly quick—they PMed me while I was speaking with a co-author and also juggling other tasks.

Gist of the conversation:

• They opened with <opal> talked with ard about getting a thread removed regarding an obsolete ban, trying to explain why this level of transparency is not useful and in fact counterproductive for irc moderation
• <opal> ard requested an "apology" but i cannot apologise in good faith when it's essentially a forced apology to get something taken down <opal> respect goes both ways in cases like this
• <opal> it could have gone: i ask nicely, "ok youre right thats useless information now and i can understand why you wouldnt want it online and indexable", it gets taken down, i say thanks <opal> we both move on with our lives <opal> but instead it's derailed: i ask nicely, "no im not removing it. why? because, thats why", me escalating to who i presume to be higher "rank" in the staff or however you wish to call it, and *hopefully* resolving it here
• They don't know what the SCP wiki is; targeting the chatrooms was because they happened to see them in synIRC. <opal> (and i still genuinely dont understand what scp is about, i hadnt come across an information page or an explanation from ard)
• I told them that I can't just wholesale delete threads without staff consensus, and their calling ARD names like "shitstain" and using profanity will make it difficult to intervene on their behalf.
• <opal> and your attributing my swearing to malice, lol <opal> this is how i talk with literally anyone on irc <opal> and it hasnt been an issue up until now
• Soulless offered to take the case as a chatadmin.
