**Item #:** SCP-9289
**Object Class:** Euclid
**Disruption Class:** Ekhi
**Risk Class:** Danger
**Special Containment Procedures:**
SCP-9289 should be contained within Bio-Containment-Site-██ in an air tight climate-controlled tungsten chamber measuring 10m x 10m x 15m. The chamber must be equipped with several ████ air filtration systems set on negative air pressure to prevent any spore leakage.
All personnel entering the containment chamber must be equipped with level 4 Hazmat suits equipped with portable air filtration vents operating on negative air pressure to ensure no spores are able to enter the body of the specified personnel.
Every personal exiting the containment chamber must pass through a full chemical decontamination procedure, following a personal 24-hour quarantine period where the personnel shall be locked in a Specialised Decontamination Lockdown Chamber (S.D.L.C.), equipped with a ████ air filtration system operating on negative air pressure, with the room experiencing a full chemical clean every 24 hours. Upon exiting the quarantine period, the specified personnel are deemed suitable to be released into the establishment once again.
Any instance of flora or organic plant matter found infected with SCP-9289 spores outside of the containment chamber are to be immediately incinerated via localised incendiary teams. Individuals found infected with SCP-9289 spores are to be immediately quarantined and monitored in a Specialised Decontamination Quarantine Chamber, and are automatically prescribed to a fungicidal treatment. If infection effects appear to have entirely worn off, the infected person is to be left in the chamber for an additional 48 hours, before experiencing a full chemical wash and decontamination surgery before being deemed suitable to continue around the foundation. If the infection reaches stage 2, termination is authorised to prevent spore release, following a full cremation.
When any personnel are quarantined in a Specialised Decontamination Quarantine Chamber, the personnel should be fed any standard nutrients and hydration liquids through a D-Class wearing a level 4 Hazmat suit equipped with portable air filtration vents operating on negative air pressure.

**Description:**
SCP-9289 is an anomalous arboriform organism resembling an adult Quercus robur (English Oak). Standing approximately 10 metres tall. The trunk and branches have a deep, rust-red pigmentation and its leaves retain a dark crimson colour all year round. SCP-9289 does not require sunlight or standard hydration for photosynthesis; it instead derives all necessary sustenance through organic matter absorbed through its root network and reproductive cycle.
SCP-9289 reproduces via releasing airborne microscopic spores. These spores are chemically inert to affect inanimate surfaces and non-mammalian organisms, however react rapidly with living mammals; entering the body via inhalation or digestion. Upon entering the body, the organism passes through an infection process, shown below.
**STAGE 1 – 0-48h:**
The host experiences several non-specific symptoms including coughing and very low-grade fever and a metallic taste in the mouth. Spores attach to the lining of lungs or digestive track and enter the bloodstream.
**STAGE 2 – DAYS 3-7:**
Spores grow/germinate into root-like fibre structures that begins to spread around the body. The host experiences severe fatigue, nausea, extreme thirst and an intense craving for high protein foods.
**STAGE 3 – DAYS 8-14:**
The internal root network begins calcifying, slowly replacing muscle tissue, bone marrow and internal organs. Lignification occurs near the epidermis, causing rigid, bark-like growths to rupture near the host’s skin. This process causes severe pain and internal bleeding, though SCP-9289 secretes a localized anaesthetic compound that keeps the host conscious until final hours.
**STAGE 4 – POST-DAY 14:**
Complete biological conversion. The host’s nervous system and vital organs fully decay, instead replace by wooden trunk tissue and root systems. The host is legally declared dead, and the resulting structure matures into a young, new-formed SCP-9289, which begins to rapidly emit SCP-9289 spores within 24 hours.

**Weaknesses and Containment Limitations:**
- **Susceptible to extreme negative temperature:**
SCP-9289 spores become immediately dormant when experiencing extreme negative temperature, essentially “deactivating” them. Standard cooling chemicals such as █████ ██████ are especially advantageous when attempting to temporarily neutralise SCP-9289.
- **Spores exhibit heavy particle nature:**
SCP-3845 spores a relatively heavy in comparison to typical fungal spores. They cannot remain airborne for prolonged periods of time, settling to the ground within a 10-metre radius without relatively intensely wind flow.
- **High chemical vulnerability:**
General fungicide chemical treatment can completely neutralize Stage 1 infections if administered within 24 hours of initial infection.
- **Inability to affect cold blooded organisms:**
SCP-9289 spores fail to germinate in host body temperatures below ██oC, making reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates completely immune.
- **Highly volatile spore release:**
Upon physical damage or experiencing sudden high temperature, SCP-9289 suddenly releases a large cloud or spores as an emergency anti-extinction system.

**Addendum #1: Incident Report 3854-Alpha**
On 12/04/██, D-4921 was exposed to SCP-9289 spores during a routine chemical cleaning of the chamber due to a micro-tear in their Hazmat suit’s wrist seal.
- **Hour 12:**
Subject reported moderate throat irritation.
- **Hour 36:**
Subject was administered a large dose of ██████.
- **Hour 48:**
Blood tests confirmed a 99.8% reduction in spore count. D-4921 fully recovered after 5 days with no permanent tissue damage, confirming the effectiveness of early-stage chemical intervention.
**Addendum #2: Neutralisation attempt:**
**Proposal A (Mechanical Destruction):**
- **Attempt:**
On 05/03/██, automated robotic limbs equipped with high-powered chainsaws and several large motorised destruction tools attempted to fell SCP-9289 by the main trunk; a way to determine if physical neutralisation would be an available method.
- **Result: Failed**
Upon experiencing structural trauma exceeding ██MPa of physical force, SCP-9289 reacts with an aggressive defence mechanism, releasing a high-velocity spontaneous, incredibly, large cloud of spores across the chamber. The spores breached secondary containment seals, infecting 2 guards stationed outside the inner chamber.
- **Conclusion:**
Mechanical sawing, chopping or uprooting destroys the containment of inner spore bladders, creating an airborne aerosol cloud capable of spreading several kilometres in attempted in open air.
**Proposal B (Controlled Incineration):**
- **Attempt:**
Thermal destruction using high temperature thermite charges in an isolated testing cell.
- **Result: Failed**
While individual unattached spores may burn easily, a fully matured SCP-9289 instance stores millions of heat resistant ██████ within its core ███████ thermal destruction causes the ████████ to rupture explosively due to expanding gases. In a controlled test, burning a 2-metre branch caused a spore plume that rose over 400 metres before dissipating, posing a severe atmospherically risk.

**Voice note from site director Doctor ███ ██████:**
“//SCP-9289 isn’t hard to destroy because its wood is indestructible; the wood itself has no particular chemical advantage. It’s the fact that it’s a biological reproductive landmine. Physically destroy it in any way, and it releases a suffocating plume of carnivorous spores. Like a failsafe prevention of extinction. Containment and isolation – not destruction – remains our safest protocol.//”
