Item #: SCP-9479
Object Class: Keter
Special Containment Procedures: Scp-9479 is to remain permanently isolated within a sealed containment structure at Site-██. The structure surrounding SCP-9479 is to contain no permanent habitation, biological laboratories, ventilation system connected to the occupied areas, or other pathways through which living organisms could enter the containment zone.
Under no circumstances is a living organism to enter SCP-9479.
Personnel are prohibited from entering the elevator under any circumstances, including during maintenance, testing, inspection, or emergency situations.
SCP-9479's doors are to remain mechanically locked in the open position whenever possible.
The elevator's controls are to be disconnected from the Site's electrical system; however, because SCP-9479 has demonstrated anomalous operation independent to conventional power sources, physical isolation is to be maintained as the primary containment measure.
The entire elevator shaft is to be enclosed behind multiple layers of reinforced barriers.
Access to the containment area is restricted to personnel with level 4/9479 clearance or higher.
All personnel entering the surrounding containment sector must undergo standard security screening and confirm that they are not carrying biological specimens or living organisms.
Because of SCP-9479's anomalous effect appears to apply to living organisms regardless of size or biological complexity, no biological samples, cultures, plants, insects, animals, or other living materials are permitted within containment sector. Remote monitoring equipment is to be use for all inspections. No biological testing involving SCP-9479 is authorized without written approval from both the Site Director and the SCP-9479 Project Lead.
Description: SCP-9479 is a commercially manufactured passenger elevator of unknown origin. SCP-9479 appears externally identical to a conventional elevator, although no manufacturer markings, serial numbers, maintenance record, or identifying documentation have been found. SCP-9479 possesses only two observable functions: descending and ascending. Regardless of the building in which SCP-9479 is installed, activating the elevator causes it to descend for an indeterminate period of time. Attempts to determine the depth reached by SCP-9479 have been unsuccessful, as all conventional methods of measuring its position cease to provide reliable results during descent. Upon reaching an unknown endpoint, SCP-9479 will remain stationary for a variable period before beginning its return ascent.
The destination reached during descent does not appear to correspond to any known physical location.
Attempts to monitor SCP-9479 using cameras have been unsuccessful in determining what occur during its return ascent.
Video footage remains completely normal throughout the entire descent. However, shortly after SCP-9479 begins ascending, the interior of the elevator is briefly illuminated by a red and green flash of light. Immediately following this flash, all recorded footage becomes corrupted and remains unreadable until SCP-9479 reaches its destination.
The cameras always remain physically functional and continue recording, but the resulting footage cannot be recovered.
The primary anomalous property of SCP-9479 manifests during ascending. If any living organism is present inside SCP-9479 when it ascent, the organism will die before the elevator reaches its destination. The effect appears to apply regardless of the organism's size, species, biological complexity, or location within the elevator.
Testing has demonstrated that the effect of applies to humans, animals, insects, plants, microorganisms, and other forms of biological life.
The anomalous effect does not appear to discriminate between individual organisms or species. Multiple organisms present during the same ascent are affected simultaneously. Following the death of an affected organism, SCP-9479 produces a small gift box containing the remains of the organism. The box is typically constructed from the red-coloured material and is approximately ██ cm in size.
A green ribbon or bow is consistently present on the lid. The mechanism by which SCP-9479 transforms or relocates affected organisms into these boxes remains unknown. Examination of the recovered boxes has failed to identify a conventional manufacturing process capable of producing them. The boxes themselves are non-anomalous unless otherwise noted, however their contents correspond to the organisms present inside SCP-9479 during the relevant ascent.
SCP-9479 has demonstrated to no known upper or lower limit regarding the number of organisms it can affect during a single activation.
The purpose of SCP-9479's descent remains unknown.
NoteL Despite extensive investigation, the Foundation has been unable to determine where SCP-9479 goes during downward journey, or whether anything exists at its destination.
Addendum 9479.1:
SCP-9479 was discovered inside an abandoned commercial building in ██████████ after local authorities received multiple complaints concerning an elevator that continued operating despite the building having been without electricity for approximately ██ years.
Foundation personnel were dispatched after surveillance footage showed the elevator doors opening and closing despite the building having no active power supply.
The elevator was initially believed to be a conventional malfunctioning elevator. The assumption was revised after an automated camera was placed inside SCP-9479 and remotely activated. The camera recorded its descending for approx. ██ hours before beginning it's ascent.
At ██-██-██, the footage recorded a brief red and green flash.
The remainder of the recording was corrupted.
When SCP-9479 reached the upper floor, the camera was found inside a small red box with a green bow attached to its lid.
No biological material was present.
Addendum 9479.II:
The first confirmed biological incident occurred before SCP-9479 was fully understood.
A small insect entered SCP-9479 while Foundation personnel were examining the elevator.SCP-9479 subsequently without authorization and began descending.
Personnel evacuated the immediate area and monitored the elevator remotely. When the SCP-9479 began ascending, the interior camera recorded the characteristic red and green flash before the footage became corrupted. Upon arrival, the elevator doors opened automatically. A small red gift box with a green bow was found inside.
The insect was not recovered elsewhere. Following this incident, SCP-9479 was classified as Keter.
Addendum 9479.III:
Because the anomalous effect appeared to occur only during SCP-9479's ascent, researchers attempted to determine whether this effect could be observed using multiple cameras. ██ cameras were installed inside SCP-9479, with additional cameras positioned outside the elevator doors and throughout the surrounding structure. All external cameras continued functionally, normally. All cameras located inside SCP-9479 produced identical results:
Normal footage during descent. Normal footage during the initial portion of ascent. A simultaneous red and green flash. Severe corruption beginning immediately afterward. Restoration of usable footage only after SCP-9479 reached its destination. Attempts to recover the corrupted footage have produced no usable images. The corrupted sections contain no identifiable audio, video, or metadata.
Addendum 9479.IV:
Following the discovery that SCP-9479 affected an insect, researchers questioned whether its anomalous effect depended upon the organism being large enough to be physically detected.
A controlled test involving microscopic biological samples was authorized. The samples were placed inside the sealed containers within SCP-9479 before activation. The elevator normally descended.
During the return ascent, the usual red and green flash occurred, followed by corruption of all internal camera footage.
Upon arrival, the containers were found to be empty.
A single red gift box was present inside SCP-9479.
Further testing of the box confirmed biological material corresponding to the samples used in the experiment.
Following this experiment, all voluntary testing involving living organisms was permanently suspended.
Addendum 9479.V:
Analysis of recovered footage has determined that the red and green illumination occurs for approximately 0.██ seconds before the internal cameras become corrupted.
The colors appear to originate from somewhere inside SCP-9479, although physical light source has been identified. The illumination does not appear to originate from the elevator's ceiling lights, control panel, emergency lighting, or any other known component.
Researchers have also noted that the two colors always appear simultaneously. No variation in color, or duration has been observed. The meaning of the red and green lights remains unknown.
Addendum 9479.VI:
Researchers initially believed that the small gift boxes were merely a secondary manifestation of SCP-9479's anomalous effect.
This assumption was challenged after several recovered boxes were examined. Every box produced by SCP-9479 is externally similar, regardless of the organism associated with it. The boxes are always red. Each box possesses a green bow attached to its lid.
No manufacturer, material source, or method of construction has been identified.
Attempts to determine where the boxes originate have been unsuccessful.
Notably, SCP-9479 does not appear to contain enough physical space to store the number of boxes it has produced.
The boxes are also never present inside SCP-9479 before an anomalous ascent.
Where the boxes come from remains unknown.
Addendum 9479.VII:
After ██ years of observation, the Foundation has been unable to determine the destination reached by SCP-9479 during its descent.
No known underground structure corresponds to the distance or duration recorded during SCP-9479's descent.
Attempts to stop the elevator between floors have failed.
Attempts to force the doors open during descent have failed.
Attempts to enter the elevator while it's ascending have been prohibited following the incident XXXX-████
The Foundation currently considers it possible that SCP-9479's downward movement does not occur entirely within conventional physical space.
The purpose of the descent remains unknown.
The significance of red and green lights remains unknown.
The origin of the gift boxes remains unknown.
Most importantly, the Foundation has been unable to determine what SCP-9479 is doing during the period between reaching the end of its descent and beginning its ascent.
Further investigation is suspended.
