**Item #:** SCP-9281
**Object Class:** Apollyon
**Special Containment Procedures:** SCP-9281 cannot currently be contained, neutralized, or mitigated.
Due to the global nature of SCP-9281, containment efforts are instead focused on monitoring, predicting, disaster response, and information control. Foundation personnel embedded within meteorological agencies, geological surveys, oceanographic institutions, and emergency-management organizations are to collect worldwide disaster data and transmit it to Site-██ for checking.
The Foundation is to maintain several independent statistical models of global natural-disaster frequency. These models must account for many anomalous and non-anomalous factors capable of producing apparent increases in disaster frequency.
Any statistically significant deviation from these models is to be investigated as a possible manifestation of SCP-9281.
Attempts to directly interfere with SCP-9281 are prohibited. All 𝟮̶𝟳̶𝟰̶ documented attempts to reduce, interrupt, or reverse the phenomenon have failed. Several experiments resulted in additional anomalous disasters occurring within hours of the intervention.
There is currently no termination protocol for SCP-9281.
**Description:** SCP-9281 is an ongoing anomalous phenomenon affecting the frequency, distribution, and temporal clustering of naturally occurring disasters worldwide.
The phenomenon is informally known as "Tempus Chaos" and "The Harbinger of Death." SCP-9281 does not appear to directly create individual disasters. Instead, it alters the statistical probability of large-scale natural disasters occurring. The exact mechanism responsible for this alteration is unknown.
Beginning in 1990, the worldwide frequency of sufficiently destructive earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tropical cyclones, floods, wildfires, tornadoes, landslides, heat waves, and other natural disasters began deviating from historical expectations. The deviation has never returned to baseline. The anomaly appears to increase the probability of destructive natural events by an unknown amount over time. The exact rate of increase cannot be determined because SCP-9281 appears to alter its own statistical behavior as its intensity increases.
Of particular concern is SCP-9281's tendency to cause multiple unrelated disasters to occur within unusually short periods of time. This phenomenon is designated the Cluster Effect. For example, a major earthquake occurring in one region does not appear to increase the geological probability of an unrelated hurricane occurring thousands of kilometers away. However, during periods of heightened SCP-9281 activity, such events occur together at frequencies significantly exceeding established statistical expectations. The disasters themselves remain largely consistent with normal physical processes.
**Origin**
The Foundation currently designates 28 August 1990 as the provisional beginning of SCP-9281. On this date, the Plainfield–Crest Hill F5 tornado struck Illinois, United States. No anomalous properties were discovered in the tornado itself. Geological, meteorological, and historical examinations have found no evidence that the event was artificially produced or otherwise anomalous. However, analysis discovered that the tornado represents the closest identifiable point to the beginning of SCP-9281's statistical deviation. Before August 1990, worldwide disaster-frequency models remained within expected historical parameters. Following August 1990, the deviation began.
**Discovery**
The first Foundation investigation began in 1994 after analysts noticed an unexpected deviation in global disaster-frequency models. It was first called insignificant by scientists, but over the years, they realized it never went back to baseline deviation. It was increasing.

**Addendum 9281-1** 2011
The year 2011 became the first major turning point in SCP-9281 research. Within the same year, the world experienced numerous major natural disasters. The April 2011 outbreak produced more than 200 tornadoes over four days, with 122 tornadoes occurring on April 27 alone. Foundation analysts initially classified these events as coincidence. They changed their classification after examining their temporal relationship with other disasters.
**Addendum 9281-2** Cluster Effect
The Cluster Effect was formally designated in 2012 following analysis of several major disasters occurring within unusually short intervals of one another.
Although individual disasters associated with SCP-9281 remain consistent with known natural processes, their temporal distribution does not. Events separated by thousands of kilometers and possessing no known causal relationship have repeatedly occurred within periods significantly shorter than predicted by historical disaster-frequency models. The following is one of the earliest examples identified by Foundation analysts:
[[div class="blockquote"]]
April 2011 - Cluster 11-A
22 April: Tornado outbreak, United States
25 April: Tornado outbreak, United States
27 April: 122 tornadoes recorded across the United States
28 April: Severe flooding, United States
29 April: Severe weather events recorded across multiple regions
Observed concentration: ████
Expected concentration: ███
Statistical significance: 0.00██%

**Addendum 9281-3** State
As of ██ August 20██, SCP-9281 remains active. No evidence has been discovered indicating that the phenomenon is approaching termination. No evidence has been discovered indicating that it has a maximum intensity. We almost do not know anything about it.
**Addendum 9281-4** Consequences
Following the discovery of the Cluster Effect, Foundation statistical analysts began investigating whether the apparent increase in SCP-9281's activity followed a recognizable mathematical distribution.
Initial models produced inconsistent results. However, in 2025, researchers at Site-██ compared the observed frequency distribution of major disasters associated with SCP-9281 against an inverted Zipf distribution.
When the Zipf distribution was reversed and its starting point aligned with the earliest confirmed SCP-9281 data, the resulting curve closely matched the observed progression of the phenomenon. Minor fluctuations were present throughout the dataset, but these deviations were not sufficient to invalidate the overall correlation.
Further analysis revealed that the similarity increased as more recent data were incorporated.
[[div class="blockquote"]]
NOTE: SCP-9281 does not appear to be "following Zipf's law" in the conventional sense. Rather, its observed distribution exhibits characteristics consistent with a reversed Zipf progression. The distinction remains under investigation.
[[/div]]
The significance of this discovery became apparent when researchers projected the distribution beyond the current observation period.
If SCP-9281 continues to follow its present trajectory, the intervals separating major natural disasters will continue to decrease. Eventually, the expected interval between sufficiently destructive events will become comparable to, and potentially smaller than, the time required for conventional emergency response and recovery. At this point, the classification of individual disasters would become increasingly difficult.
An earthquake occurring during an ongoing hurricane would no longer constitute an unusual cluster. A subsequent volcanic eruption would occur before the effects of either event had subsided. Floods, wildfires, tornadoes, landslides, and other disasters would overlap temporally to such an extent that assigning individual start and end points would become statistically meaningless. The Foundation has designated this projected condition Terminal Convergence.
//Projected Consequence//
Under the assumption that the current statistical relationship remains valid, SCP-9281 will eventually reach a point at which the probability of at least one major natural disaster occurring somewhere on Earth during any given interval approaches certainty.
The model does not provide a reliable date for this occurrence. More concerningly, the model cannot establish an upper limit for SCP-9281's intensity. Several projections indicate that continued escalation would eventually produce conditions consistent with an **XK-Class End-of-the-World Scenario**.
The projected scenario is not expected to consist of a single catastrophic event. Instead, the planet would enter a persistent state of overlapping natural disasters, preventing meaningful recovery between events and progressively reducing the ability of human civilization to respond to them.
At high levels of SCP-9281 activity, the distinction between a "disaster" and the normal environmental state of Earth would cease to be meaningful.
//Cross-Scenario Analysis//
Following the XK-Class projection, the Foundation's Department of Extranormal Events compared Terminal Convergence against several previously documented XK-Class scenarios.
The results were inconclusive but alarming. Several scenarios described in Foundation records contain environmental or geological conditions that could theoretically occur during an advanced SCP-9281 event. SCP-9281 does not appear to directly generate these anomalies; however, its projected endpoint could create conditions in which multiple independent catastrophic scenarios occur simultaneously.
One such comparison was made against S. D. Locke's Proposal, or When Day Breaks.
Researchers initially dismissed the comparison because the Proposal and SCP-9281 have fundamentally different anomalous mechanisms. However, subsequent simulations demonstrated that the distinction becomes less relevant as SCP-9281 approaches Terminal Convergence. The problem is not that SCP-9281 necessarily causes any particular XK-Class scenario.
The problem is that, at sufficient intensity, there may no longer be a meaningful distinction between SCP-9281 and the simultaneous occurrence of several XK-Class scenarios.
From Researcher's Log 9281-██
- We spent three months trying to determine what SCP-9281 would do at its maximum intensity.
- There isn't one.
- There is no maximum intensity in the model.
- The curve just keeps going.
- At some point, we stopped asking what disaster comes next.
- The question became whether "next" still means anything.
**Final Message**
For thirty-six years, humanity has continued living through one disaster after another. And every time the Foundation thought the pattern had reached its limit, another event proved otherwise. There is still no known cause. There is still no known method of containment. There is still no evidence that SCP-9281 is alive. There is only the pattern, and the pattern is getting **faster**.
1990 - The Clock Starts.
2026 - The Clock Is Still Running.
???? - The Clock Stops.
We do not know if it will end or not.
