Got this pm from Wikidot user jaktaz16:

after reading the faq about the creative commons i would like to ask a few clarification questions.

1. if i wanted to write my own story using the theme of scp but all of the scp involved were my own creations would that still fall under the creative commons law?

2. if the story still falls under creative commons and i wanted to make a game out of it how would releasing it work? to clairify, would i need to have the game be free?

Hi Noah,

Apologies for the lateness – I have had to deal with some real-life business the last few days.

In regard to your questions:

The work you are suggesting would fall under CC-BY-SA 3.0.

The SCP Foundation wiki and all unique concepts and terms associated therewith (the idea of the SCP Foundation, SCP Documentation and related formats, etc.) are licensed under Creative Commons Share-Alike 3.0, and any derivative works based on them need to be released under the CC-BY-SA.

You are free to write original stories with original secret organisations or anomalous creatures/objects/phenomena of your own creation, but anything with the SCP Foundation or objects with SCP designations would count as a derivative work.

2. if the story still falls under creative commons and i wanted to make a game out of it how would releasing it work? to clairify, would i need to have the game be free?

To quote from our Licensing Guide:

• Sell: You can sell the remixes you make based on the SCP Foundation. However, keep in mind that you probably will not get rich off of them, because under Share-Alike, anyone can freely copy or pirate your stuff, and you will have no legal recourse.

In other words, you are not required to make your game free; however, you might want to take into account the terms of the License when planning how to make money out of it, if making money is your goal.
