The Book that Beholds
Item #: SCP-9129
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures:
SCP-9129 is to be housed within a 0.5 x 0.5 x 0.5m specialized containment unit designed for total environmental and sensory isolation. The interior of the box is entirely covered with Vantablack S-VIS coating to ensure complete darkness, preventing SCP-9129 from receiving any sensory input. The exterior of the containment box is to be lined with 5cm of lead. The containment unit SCP-9129 must be lined with complete sound-damping, and 70 decibel white noise must be played in the unit at all times.
Personnel assigned to SCP-9129 must undergo an initial psychological baseline screening upon assignment, followed by evaluations every 14 days. Any unusual cognitive or behavioral variations must be reported directly to Dr. Long. Any affected personnel are to undergo mandatory psychological rehabilitation, and Class-B amnestics are to be administered as deemed necessary.
Description:
SCP-9219 is an anomalous book, “152 × 229 mm (6 × 9 in) in size. The cover displays various color and shape patterns that transform continuously into new chromatic designs. Tests indicate SCP-9129’s exterior chemical composition and texture alter in accordance with the color and shapes that appear on the exterior of SCP-9129. The design features an oculus at its center, displaying a deep blood-red sclera. The pupil shape of the eye experienced a permanent alteration after the event known as Incident 9129-03.
Any sensory stimuli surrounding SCP-9129 are instantaneously absorbed and recorded inside SCP-9129. Any sound waves or photons near SCP-9129 are completely assimilated inside the book.
Further tests show SCP-9129 attracts endings indicated by Experiment Log 9219-A. All organic matter in the presence of SCP-9129 leads to rapid cellular deconstruction, leading to cessation. It is observed that intelligent life in contact with SCP-9129 is used as a “vessel” to accelerate these catastrophic ends. Subjects with a higher Cognitive Resistance Value (CRV) resist "vessel" conversion longer than average. In these cases, SCP-9129 compensates by accelerating the subject's physical cellular deconstruction until a terminal state is reached, as documented in Experiment Log 9129-B.
All terminations are recorded in SCP-9129’s pages; failed terminations will not be recorded in SCP-9129.
Incident 9129-01: Initial Discovery
Date: 05/13/2009
Location: Sector-██, Paris Catacombs (65m depth)
Subjects: Four (4) civilian urban explorers ("cataphiles").
Details:
On 05/13/2009, four civilian urban explorers entered an uncharted, unmapped section of the Paris Catacombs. According to recovered digital camera footage, the group breached a wall of non-conventional, ancient masonry, revealing a sealed chamber.
The chamber walls were lined with inscriptions of the word "BEHOLD". At the center of the room, the group discovered SCP-9129 resting on a stone plinth. Upon approaching the object, the group's headlamps began to dim, as the book began to "assimilate" the light and sound within the room.
Results:
The group maintained proximity with the object for approximately 6:50 minutes before entering a state of acute psychosis, aiding each other in the manual extraction of their eyes to then place them atop SCP-9129. Subject 4 (Survivor) was then observed retrieving a pencil from his person, which he used to self-enucleate. Following this action, SCP-9129 entered a dormant state, and Subject 4 was observed exiting the chamber.
Subject 4 (Survivor): Found by Foundation recovery teams three days later.
Post-Incident Action:
The survivor was extracted and administered Class-A amnestics and released back to his family. A cover story involving a localized structural collapse and "carbon monoxide poisoning" was released to the public to explain the deaths of the other three civilians. MTF Bravo-8 was dispatched for the initial retrieval attempt.
Incident 9129-02:
On 6/17/2009 at 14:32 MTF Bravo-8 made initial contact with SCP-9129 through body-worn camera footage. Agent Brown is seen falling into a mass hysteria. The other agents ( Agents Tommy, Tran, and Lebean) present begin removing their own eyes whilst offering them to Agent Brown shortly after Agents Tommy, Tran, and Lebean expire. Agent Brown is then seen placing the other agent's eyes atop SCP-9129. Notably, the eyes are absorbed into the book for a short period of time until Agent Brown then attempts to forcibly remove his own eyes, but stumbles on Agent Tommy’s deceased body and is knocked unconscious. The eyes previously absorbed into the book reemerged, appearing completely unaltered. Following the total operational failure of Bravo-8, MTF Zeta-9 ('Mole Rats') was deployed to the site, utilizing specialized remote-handling equipment to complete the retrieval.
Incident 9129-03:
After observing SCP-9129 via security footage for an extended period of time (13 min), Dr. █████ is then observed via security footage displaying signs of disorientation and slurred speech. The subject repeatedly vocalized the phrase “I MUST BEHOLD” while unresponsive to verbal commands.
At approximately 18:42, Dr. █████ departed from their assigned post and proceeded toward SCP-9129’s temporary holding area while evidently becoming increasingly hysterical. Security personnel were dispatched but failed to intercept the subject in time.
Upon arrival, Dr. █████ approached the on-duty guard (Guard █████), and Guard █████ began removing his own eyes whilst offering them to Dr.█████. The subject then transported the eyes to SCP-9129 and placed them on the surface of the object.
Similar to Incident-99703, the removed biological material was assimilated into the object's inner pages. Immediately following this action, Dr. █████ proceeded to remove their own eyes and place them onto SCP-9129.
At this point, all visual monitoring systems experienced simultaneous failure.
Footage resumes at 18:57, showing Dr. █████ collapsed within the containment area. SCP-9129 was observed to remain closed and in its original position. Dr. █████ expired shortly thereafter due to sustained trauma. Notably, the Oculus structure on SCP-9129 changed color, mirroring the eye color of Dr.█████.
Experiment Log 9129-A:
Subject: One (1) Malus domestica (common apple).
Procedure: Subject was placed within 0.5m of SCP-9129. No physical contact was made.
Observations:
00:15: SCP-9129’s exterior begins to rapidly shift (higher velocity than normal).
00:43: Subject shows signs of cellular degradation, localized browning, and rotting.
01:05: Subject is in complete cilia deconstruction.
02:26: Subject completely deconstructed, no signs of cellular viability.
Experiment Log 9129-B:
Subject: Class-D-96734 personnel
Procedure: SCP-9129 was retrieved from containment and placed in the presence of Subject 1 (Class-D-96734). Subject 1 was ordered to take a Cognitive Resistance Value (CRV) test and scored 119. The subject was then ordered to touch SCP-9129.
Observations:
02:45: Subject begins to show signs of discomfort and evident agitation.
05:36: Subject begins committing self-harm. (Ripping out chevelure and clawing at epidermis)
07:29: Subject begins falling into hysteria and visibly attempts to attack researchers through the observation glass.
10:01: Subject attempts to remove his eyes
10:02: Subject 1 is terminated by onsite security.
Interpretation:
Based on the data gathered from the previous incidents, I have drafted the following entry for the project files to reflect the correlation between mental fortitude and SCP-9129’s influence:
"Dr. [REDACTED]’s CRV of 132 compared to Agent Brown’s 109 shows clear similarity: the higher the Cognitive Resistance Value, the higher a subject's ability to resist SCP-9129’s influence before they fall under SCP-9129's effects." — Dr. Long
Addendum-A- Dr.Long:
“As I sit here in my study writing this, it seems to dawn on me, SCP-9129 is simply an observer is desires to obsere the end of everything and note it down within its infinite pages. I believe I understand and know I have it perfectly contained; I am completely immune.
Incident 9129-04:
Date: 03/12/2015
Subject: Dr. Long (Project Lead)
Details:
At 03:14, Dr. Long is seen on security footage leaving his office and heading to SCP-9129's containment unit. Thermal imaging then shows Dr. Long disabling the white noise generators and removing the Vantablack shroud. No audio could be captured due to the noise-damaging unit.
Dr. Long then made a direct physical connection with SCP-9129, an act strictly prohibited by containment protocols. The subject appeared to be reading from the pages despite the sensory-sink effect. At 03:22, Dr. Long began the manual extraction of his own eyes. Unlike previous subjects, Dr. Long did not display signs of hysteria; instead, he maintained a calm until total cessation.
Addendum-Final: Recovered Personal Note (from Dr.Long’s personal journal):
“I thought a higher CRV number meant I was safer. I was wrong. A high CRV doesn't make you resistant; it just makes you a more interesting protagonist. The book didn't want the guards or the D-Class; they were not interesting enough; it was waiting for someone who could understand the 'ending' it was writing. Baleros is not a god to be worshiped, but a witness to be fed. I must let him behold the last page.” — Dr. Long
Closing Statement:
Following the death of Dr. Long, SCP-9129 has been relocated to a Deep-Storage Site. All research is suspended. SCP-9129 is to be kept both “blind” and “deaf”. All sensory stimuli are strictly prohibited near SCP-9129.
