Got this message in my inbox from Wikidot user Ian Pishko this morning:

Hi there. My name is Ian, and I have an idea for a a web series/ARG, within the SCP universe.

The only existing materials of yours I'd like to be able to include, is a version of the Foundation logo, and references to staff who work within the Foundation. Everything else is created by me. And possibly Dr. Gears' staff photo.

Is there any protocol I need to go through, or am I ok to do this? Thanks.

Haven't drafted up a reply yet. Probably will get on to it after I got my morning coffee first :P

Hi Ian,

The SCP Foundation wiki and all unique concepts and terms associated therewith are licensed under Creative Commons Share-Alike 3.0 (explained further http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ here); this means you are legally free to use them, but your use of them must also abide by the terms of the CC-BY-SA 3.0 license. Specifically, somewhere on your group description page, you need to include a link to the Foundation wiki (http://www.scp-wiki.net) and a link to that license, along with an explanation that the SCP Foundation and all associated concepts abide by that license. Additionally, any derivative concepts that you produce based on those concepts must also be licensed under CC-BY-SA 3.0, and you must include that notice in your description as well. This is so that individuals can both track down where your ideas came from and know that they can use and create similar ideas under those conditions.

Similarly, with specific photographs and pictures like the Foundation logo or Dr. Gears’ staff photo, you will need to include specific URL links to them, as well as credits for the image creators if possible. With the logo, our members far2 and Aelanna were the designer and artist respectively. With the picture on Dr Gears’ profile page, I will need to double-check for sure, but so far it looks like most versions of it out there are under one NonCommercial license or another. You may want to search for differently-licensed versions of it, yourself.

Also, just for clarification, by “references to staff who work within the Foundation”, do you mean the “Author Avatar” characters like Dr. Gears, Dr. Bright, etc.?

Thanks for you response.

I don't think I'll be making any specific staff references, actually. And possibly not even use the Gears photo. I'm mostly just working to include the Foundation as an agency, as a metaphor for an approach to controlling an uncontrollable universe.

I'll be sure to include the required links on the relevant pages. Thanks again.
