**Special Containment Procedures:** It is forbidden to enter the room wearing any Kevlar clothing. SCP-9617 and all related instances are to be contained in a standard aquarium, filled with water, on a small 5-meter by 5-meter by 5-meter room on Section-II of Site-18. Instances of SCP-9617-1 retrieved must be hung and locked inside a reinforced glass dome on the room. Furthermore, any attempt to dress instances of SCP-9617-1 is strictly prohibited.
**Description:** SCP-9617 is a parasite resembling a small earthworm, but with a hexagonal body structure. This worm appears to have its skin and internal organs composed of Kevlar, making it extremely resistant to various types of damage. The worm’s hexagonal body measures approximately 8 to 15 centimeters in length and 0.8 to 1.2 centimeters in diameter.
Like all worms, SCP-9617 has its own life cycle, divided into five distinct stages:
• Stage 1: Searching
• Stage 2: Proliferation
• Stage 3: Fixation
• Stage 4: Feeding
• Stage 5: Incubation
**Stage 1:** Being a worm without a host, SCP-9617 shows no visible effect on humans and exhibits no signs of aggression or interest. However, when wearable Kevlar clothing, mainly bulletproof vests, approaches within 10 meters, the worm immediately detects it and rushes toward it. SCP-9617 moves slowly, with a recorded maximum speed of 1.7 km/h, and will attempt to reach the vest, stopping for nothing. Upon contact, SCP-9617 enters its second stage.
**Stage 2:** SCP-9617 will start burrowing into the vest. Its Kevlar-based skin and organs then disintegrate and merge with the Kevlar fibers of the bulletproof vest. This process can take between 2 to 4 hours, depending on the vest’s size.
Once SCP-9617 fully dissolves, the vest becomes anomalous and is reclassified as SCP-9617-1. When a vest is infected, other instances of SCP-9617 will lose interest in that vest and will try to search for other non-infected vests. The vest will display no abnormal properties until a human wears it and fastens its buckles.

**Stage 3:** SCP-9617-1 will permanently attach itself to the wearer. If the buckles are not closed, they will automatically fasten within 5 minutes. The vest then begins to slowly insert microscopic Kevlar fibers into the wearer’s body, attaching themselves to the nervous, digestive, and muscular systems. These fibers measure approximately 30 micrometers in diameter—thinner than a human hair. Due to their size and the slow rate of penetration, the host feels only mild discomfort.
After 4 to 8 hours, SCP-9617-1 will have completely infiltrated the host’s systems and will begin its fourth and most painful stage.
**Stage 4:** SCP-9617-1 begins to feed on the host’s pleasures—psychological pleasures such as love and happiness; physical pleasures such as relaxation; and gustatory pleasures such as consuming food the host enjoys.
Over time, SCP-9617-1 begins to swell, gradually crushing the host’s ribcage. As the process continues, the ribs crack, the spine becomes dislocated, and the internal organs are compressed until the host dies.
The duration of this process varies significantly depending on the host’s pleasure levels and overall well-being. In some cases, it may be completed within a single day, while in others, SCP-9617-1 can feed for over a month. Once SCP-9617-1 can no longer extract nourishment from its host, it enters its fifth and final stage.
**Stage 5:** During this stage, SCP-9617-1 detaches its internal Kevlar fibers from the host’s body, effectively releasing itself and awaiting a new human to wear it.
The remaining Kevlar fibers inside the deceased host form small nodules in multiple parts of the body, designated SCP-9617-2. Over time, these nodules grow, and after approximately 51 hours, they hatch, releasing new instances of SCP-9617, thereby restarting the organism’s life cycle.
------
During Stage 4, researchers discovered a method to slow SCP-9617-1 growth through pain, the inverse of pleasure. This includes emotional pain (sadness, anger, jealousy), physical pain (beatings, burns, gunshot wounds), or gustatory pain (consuming food the host dislikes).
__However, like any parasite, if this “treatment” does not completely destroy it, SCP-9617-1 will adapt, rendering the same method ineffective in future encounters.__
Furthermore, with each injury the host sustains, both SCP-9617-1 and the host regenerate rapidly and adapt to that form of damage, developing increased resistance upon repeated exposure—eventually achieving near-total immunity. For example, when shot with conventional firearms, the host will initially be injured like a normal human, but after a fast regeneration process and being shot again, the host’s resistance increases dramatically, making penetration of both body and vest increasingly difficult.
This repeats with all types of physical damage—burns, cuts, punches, and many others. However, if the physical damage the host sustains exceeds their developed resistance, the host will eventually die.
If the host dies prematurely and the vest is not swollen enough, SCP-9617-1 will still form SCP-9617-2 nodules inside the corpse; however, most or all of these nodules will fail to fully develop and will wither over time and be decomposed along with the corpse. Therefore, it is concluded that the nodules’ development rate is linked to the vest’s degree of swelling.
The same behavior is observed with psychological damage: when placed on a host exhibiting symptoms of depression, for example, the vest’s swelling rate is slow. Over time, however, the host’s mental deficiencies tend to improve, and a host with severe depressive symptoms will eventually cease to experience them. The same applies to food. Foods the host previously considered unpleasant will, over time, become liked by the host—even if those foods are not fit for normal consumption, such as the excrement of other animals.
SCP-9617-1 can be forcibly removed; however, because Kevlar fibers have penetrated the host’s bodily systems as if the vest were part of the body, forcible removal causes massive internal hemorrhaging and will result in the host’s death.
Researchers studied and tested multiple methods for removing SCP-9617-1 without killing the host, but unfortunately, all of them failed due to SCP-9617-1 adaptive factor.
**Discovery:** SCP-9617 was discovered in Honduras, where drug cartels were attempting to undermine local law enforcement. One cartel member, a trained chemist, devised a plan to create an acid capable of slowly degrading Kevlar. He infiltrated a factory that produced bulletproof vests and secretly released the substance onto the Kevlar stock, causing the vests to lose their resistance and leaving police officers significantly more vulnerable.
The operation was initially considered a success by the cartel. However, while working in his laboratory, the chemist observed that after a period of time, the acid ceased decomposing the Kevlar. Shortly thereafter, worm-like organisms began emerging from the treated material. It appeared that the acid had somehow absorbed the Kevlar and undergone a mutation, resulting in the spontaneous creation of life—an event loosely comparable to early theories of abiogenesis, in which environmental factors such as heat and radiation contributed to the emergence of life billions of years ago.
Word of the phenomenon quickly spread within the cartel, eventually attracting the attention of the SCP Foundation. Foundation operatives confiscated the chemist’s research, interrogated involved cartel members, and administered amnestics following containment.
Subsequently, SCP Foundation teams arrived at the factory where the acid had been deployed. Multiple deceased police officers were found at the site, their ribcages destroyed by infected ballistic vests. The facility was completely overrun by the worm-like entities.
The factory was ultimately destroyed via Tomahawk missile strike. Several surviving organisms, along with infected Kevlar vests, were recovered and transferred into Foundation custody. In addition to probable AI text, the image in the article was unambiguously AI-generated, as it still contains the Gemini watermark: https://imgur.com/pytTgCA
