Item #: "The Map Without Borders"
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-9043 is to be stored inside of a reinforced wooden containment cell measuring 3m × 5m × 3m at Site-██. Access to SCP-9043 requires a Level 2 security clearance. Personnel handling SCP-9043 must wear standard gloves and avoid direct contact with SCP-9043 for more than five minutes at a time. SCP-9043 may be handled for research purposes with prior approval from a Level 4 clearence researcher. No electronic devices or sharp objects are allowed within SCP-9043's containment cell as SCP-9043 reacts in an unknown way to these objects. Any observed changes in the map’s geography or markings must be reported immediately to a Level 4+ clearance researcher.
Description: SCP-9042 is an antique map, dating back to the 1900's made out of papyrus and measuring approximately 29.7 x 42 cm in size. At first glance it appears to depict an unremarkable regional geography consistent with Earth during that period. The anomalous properties of SCP-9043 become apparent when observed over time:~
01. Shifting Geography: Landmasses, cities, towns and rivers appear to shift on the map to impossible dimensions. Entire regions of earth may be replaced with unexplainable terrain that does not match the baseline earth geography.
Addendum 9043-A — Discovery: SCP-9043 was recovered at approximately 3:15 PM in the afternoon from a private estate in █████████ after reports of a "old fashioned map shifting locations". This quickly drew the O5 council's attention. At approximately 4:54 PM, Mobile Task Force team Epsilon-11 was sent to the estate to recover SCP-9043.
Addendum 9043-B — Research Notes:
• Dr. ██████ attempted to digitize SCP-9043 but this failed. The scanned images returned a static map that does not change properties.
• D-Class subjects tasked with navigating to locations depicted on SCP-9043 frequently report disorientation or perceive nonexistent terrain when attempting to align the map with the real world.
