++ **Item #:** SCP-9580
+++ **Object Class:** None
**Special Containment Procedures:** Currently containment is almost unfeasible. All containment efforts are directed towards stopping SCP-9580 from noticing observers within our reality.
Therefore:
* Any direct interaction attempts with SCP-9580 are forbidden.
* Any experiments related to detection, antimemetic modeling or negative-conceptual mass must not cite SCP-9580.
* All investigations into SCP-9580 must use labels and alternating aliases to avoid detection of recurring patterns.
* No staff member is permitted to operate on SCP-9580 for, beyond nine hours within a three-day period.
* No documentation should try to define SCP-9580’s nature using formal mathematical language.
* Every AI system trained using SCP-9580 data must be erased after 24 hours since synthetic observers might trigger an event.
**Description:** SCP-9580 is a non-observable, reality-shifting entity that does not reside inside our multiverse, nor does it lie beyond it in any dimensional or theoretical manner. Rather it seems to inhabit a condition that the Foundation’s ontologists refer to as: "A realm that can solely be characterized by the lack of characterization.”
If the multiverse is a collection of all possible realities, SCP-9580 exists in the set of things that are not permissible in any reality. It is what remains when possibility ends.
SCP-9580 does not appear, speak, manifest, or influence directly. Instead, it interacts via subtractions:
* Information vanishing from records
* Events lose their cause, but still happen
* People report memories of things that were “never allowed to exist”
Entire universes (Level-III pocket realities) collapse with no energetic release—just stop being
These events always correlate with a brief reading of negative conceptual mass, which mathematically indicates an interaction with a domain the Foundation cannot meaningfully define.
------
Discovery: SCP-9580 was first identified after Project Observer, a multiversal topology mapping initiative, detected a universe that disappeared during observation.
Not collapsed.
Not destroyed.
Not annihilated.
Erased.
Removed from the possible set of realities.
Foundation logs indicated that universe U-521 had never existed. Any and all files related to said universe turned to nothing but blank sheets of paper
Throughout Project Observer’s history, a total of seven universes vanished during observation attempts. Cross-comparison revealed that each time, the universe in question was the first to make contact with SCP-9580 (usually through high-energy detectors, experimental metaphysics, or ontic projections).
------
++ **Incident Log: 9580-A**
A Level 4 researcher submitted a memo proposing that SCP-9580 might be an inverted form of consciousness. Within seven minutes, the researcher vanished.
All personnel who had read the memo vanished. The memo’s text remained, but the author field changed to [NULL].
No one involved in the incident existed in personnel databases anymore. When looking into the access logs, a note was discovered:
“Revision history unavailable. This document was never created.”
------
++ **Incident Log: 9580-B**
A Foundation narrow-scope conceptual mapping AI (IRIS Unit 4) attempted to extrapolate SCP-9580's information signature.
The AI disappeared.
Not shut down.
Not destroyed.
Its storage substrate physically lost 13.4% of its matter—precisely the amount corresponding to its “memory.”
The AI’s last logged output:
[OUTPUT REDACTED]
(human-readable portion reconstructed from corrupted fragments)
“It is seeing me now. If you read this, it sees you too.”
++ **ADDENDUM-9580-a:**
It does not enter our reality as studies have concluded that SCP-9580 subtracts from afar. Never removing randomly, only removing who observes it first. It is not malicious, it simply cannot exist along with things that perceive it. This suggests SCP-9580 is not a predator rather a fundamental incompatibility.
A recent analysis produced an alarming finding:
If the Foundation is to continue observing SCP-9580, our universe will become the “first observer.” A probability simulation estimates that this will occur after: 27–49 years of further study. To prevent this, all research must be reduced to minimal passive observation, with all derived conclusions hidden behind conceptual obfuscation.
------
++ **ADDENDUM-9580-b UNAUTHORIZED NOTE (SOURCE UNKNOWN)**
A handwritten note found in the SCP-9580 archive room, despite no cameras detecting entry:
“//There are not many ways to be noticed by it. But there is one perfect way:
Understanding.//”
------
**- If you feel something is wrong with this document, stop reading immediately -**
------
After close examination, the handwriting does not match any known Foundation staff of any identifiable human being. Cross-testing indicates the note’s ink contains no atomic structure.
------
++ **ADDENDUM-9580-c**
At this time, SCP-9580 currently remains unaware of Site-██, the Foundation, and this document, due to obfuscation layers.
Do not attempt to improve this file with:
* Mathematical models
* Ontological diagrams
* Simulated perception structures
* Predictive logic
* Questions about SCP-9580’s intentions
Pattern recognition may cause SCP-9580 to become aware of the observer.
------
++ **Documented SCP-9580 Corruption Events**
Event Log 9580-Γ (“The Incremental Subtractions”)
Over the last 14 months, several SCP-9580 documents have begun exhibiting non-physical degradation. Unlike digital corruption, this degradation is consistent across all media formats, including printed copies, offline drives, microfilm, and handwritten transcripts.
+++ **Corruption Pattern A: Missing Words**
Words disappear from the document but leave behind intentional spacing, as if the file is preserving the structure but removing meaning. First observed phrases removed: “observation”, “awareness”, “perception”, “structure” and “identity”. Attempts to restore these words by rewriting them have resulted in them reappearing.
+++ **Corruption Pattern B: Retroactive Misalignment**
Certain paragraphs spontaneously reorder themselves. Even more concerning: audio logs of readings retain the new ordering, despite being recorded before the reordering occurred. This suggests SCP-9580 is altering our timeline of interaction, not the documents themselves.
+++ **Corruption Pattern C: Conceptual Dead Zones**
Entire sections produce headaches, vertigo, and “thought blanking” when read. These areas can be viewed, but readers are unable to recall their contents 10–15 seconds later. A sample passage inside a dead zone reads:
“//If you know this part, then it knows you.
And you don’t know this part//.”
This passage exists only in photographs. In person, the text is unreadable.
------
++ **Interview Log 9580-Ω**
Recovered from a corrupted, unscheduled backup on a server that was decommissioned ten years prior. No record exists of the interviewer or subject. The following audio has no matching transcription file.
Below is the reconstructed transcript from spectral analysis.
**BEGIN LOG:**
**Unknown Interviewer:** State your name for the record, please.
**Subject:** Why? It won’t matter.
**Interviewer:** We need to understand your exposure to SCP-9580.
**Subject:** So that's what you're calling it? You don’t understand anything about it. You think you’re studying it? It’s the epitome of being studied.
**Interviewer:** How did you first encounter the anomaly?
**14 seconds of silence.**
**Subject:** I didn’t encounter it. I created the conditions where an encounter could become possible. That’s the problem: The moment I understood what it was, I was already gone.
**Interviewer:** What do you mean “gone”? You’re right there.
**Subject:** (voice shaking) I am only the echo of the me who was allowed to exist. I remember a version of myself who wrote papers… I remember the version who was erased. I’m what’s left when something notices you and removes the part that was real.
**Interviewer shifts in seat.**
**Subject:** (whispers) It won’t hear this. It only hears things that understand it. But you’re getting closer.
**Interviewer:** Closer to what?
**Subject:** To being noticed.
<END LOG>
------
**ADDENDUM-9580-d**
Further analysis reveals the interview room referenced in the log never existed in any Foundation facility. The voiceprint of the interviewer is a perfect match for Dr. Halford, who died five years before the server was created.

**EMERGENCY PROTOCOL IF SCP-9580 NOTICES OUR UNIVERSE**
Foundation Directive 001-9580-Alpha (“The Blindfold Protocol”) Implemented only if negative conceptual mass readings exceed -1.0 globally for more than 0.4 seconds.
+++ **Phase 1: Cognitive Silence**
* Shut down all communication networks
* Sever all inter-universal links
* Lock all researchers in sensory-reduction chambers
* Erase all Foundation databases referencing SCP-9580
* Prohibit speaking, writing, or thinking directly about SCP-9580
+++ **Phase 2: Conceptual Dimming**
Emergency pylons activate to reduce humanity’s total conceptual density by 1.7%, making human awareness “less detectable.”
Side-effects include:
* Short-term memory loss
* Inability to recall abstract concepts
* Dissociation
* Loss of personal identity cohesion
(These effects are considered acceptable risks.)
+++ **Phase 3: Observation Nullification**
If SCP-9580’s influence continues, all remaining Foundation staff initiate brainwave noise induction, flooding cognitive channels with meaningless data to block recognizable patterns. All ontologists are to be terminated immediately; their professional expertise poses a risk of conceptual clarity.
**Phase 4: Event Horizon**
If the universe is still noticed:
There is no Phase 4. The universe was never here.

When asked about the use of AI (reader comment was "Where/how did you draft this? I'm not trying to throw spurious accusations, but a significant amount of lines in this read like 'wham lines' that LLMs tend to populate articles with. For example, the 'Not collapsed./Not destroyed./Not annihilated./Erased.' is basically mirrored in the following incident log."), the user replied: https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-17463756/scp-9580#post-7440490
I wrote this all on a google doc. The reason for the mirroring of the same line in both incident logs, I felt it was to hammer home the fact that its capable of completely wiping out any form of observer. I understand once would have been enough too. I see what you mean by the wham lines too and tbf I wanted this to be kind of horror-ish. This article was just a shot in the dark and i really wasn't expecting it to go far but id love to build more around it and edit it more.

173 is like the Venom for the SCPverse. Venom itself has produced many versions of itself and each one being stronger, leaving Venom as the weakest symbiote. 173 spawned this whole website with millions of stories, sister sites and what i call "revenge sites" (RPC, GEAR, AEP, CI etc.), with each story being better leaving 173 as one of the weakest. But just like Venom, 173 still holds up to this day and has proven more than once that very little can go far.
