+ Elevator Pitch
An amusement park fortune telling machine, with the twist that it accurately predicts the users death.
++ Central Narrative
This SCP(for brevity, it is referred to as SCP-XXXX) is an amusement park fortune-telling machine, identical to a vintage "Zoltan" machine. When a quarter is inserted, machine delivers a printed fortune that, with exact accuracy, describes the manner and exact time of the user's death. Logs also show that it also has the ability to reference and predicts incidents with involving other objects that are contained by The Foundation. The Foundation recovered SCP-XXXX after investigations into string of suicides of urban explores with one common string: they all went to the abandoned amusement park where SCP-XXXX resides . Personal who use SCP-XXXX are noted experiencing psychological distress after receiving their fortune. Research reports show that its fortunes leads to paranoia, avoidance behavior, and self-fulfilling fatality. However, as stated in the addendum, the studies performed by the lab are not enough to determine if the machine is simply correlation, or a causality. The Foundation is also are unable to destroy the machine, since it restores itself every time.
++ Hook
The main hook is SCP-XXXX's revealing the death of the user, I intend to use research logs and a research paper to nail the idea that causation can't be determined. In other words, the Foundation researchers are unable to determine if interaction with the Fortune Machine results in the cause of death, or if it is simply revealing a predetermined outcome. The self-repair mechanism is a device I am employing to say it can't be destroyed, and reference to another SCP is a way to add flavor and tie in to the SCP universe better.

The post has over 20 revisions across two days. One revision, specifically 8 Oct 2025, 16:19, has the following excerpts of note. The formatting also shifts dramatically compared to earlier revisions.
At the heart of Fortune Machine, is a exploration of inevitability. It's a example of how curiosity clashes with fate: A desire to know one's future, and the powerlessness upon the realization that it cannot be changed. The machine, in function, just gives an exact circumstance or an exact time of death; knowledge no-one should know. Another aspect is played by The Foundation: despite their scientific rigor, it can not discern if the machine causes fate, or if it simply reveling a predetermined outcome.
The novel concept that I am envisioning is that this SCP has is a ability to self repair. This self-repair isn't instant magic or healing. Rather, it is the idea that this SCP, when damaged, sends out a SCP-A that will walk (at a slow 10.1 km/h) , get the supplies needed to repair, return, perform repair, and get reintegrated into the SCP once repair is complete.
The user also has a sandbox page with AI indicators: https://scp-sandbox-3.wikidot.com/mr-johnsonian-doe-the-xi-s-sandbox of note, Revision 6 adds the majority of the article in full. Later edits are much smaller and generally formatting.

[[tab Review Ready: The Fortune Teller]]
++ SCP-XXXX — The Fortune Teller
**Item #:** SCP-XXXX
**Object Class:** Safe
++ **Special Containment Procedures:**
SCP-XXXX and SCP-XXXX-A are to remain at [REDACTED] Theme Park at all times. The enclosure must include a 100-meter perimeter fence with motion and pressure sensors, an interior locking gate, and a weather proof canopy over SCP-XXXX to reduce environmental degradation. Prefabricated repair materials (birch wood, glass, sealant, and paint matching SCP-XXXX’s exterior) must be kept on-site at all times.
SCP-XXXX is to be monitored 24/7 via motion sensors and CCTV covering a 50 m radius. Any movement within 20 m triggers an automated alert to Site-[[span class="blackout" title="Site-21"]]████████[[/span]]security.
+++ **Relocation and Handling**
Due to SCP-XXXX’s weight and fragility, relocation is to be minimized. Mishandling or attempts to transport SCP-XXXX without specialized equipment may damage the casing, triggering a repair excursion and potential public exposure.
++ **Description:**
SCP-XXXX resembles a circa 1980 Zoltan fortune-telling machine (manufacturer [REDACTED] measuring approximately 195 cm H x 86 cm W x 71 cm D, and weighing an approximate 198.7 kg. The machine appears in mint condition regardless of its age and exposure to elements.
SCP-XXXX activates when a person walks within 5 m of the machine. It will use speakers to play lines common with other [REDACTED]- made Zoltan machines in an attempt to entice use. To use the machine, a person must insert an authentic U.S. quarter. When a quarter is inserted, the internal mannequin (designated SCP-XXXX-A) hovers its hand over a green crystal ball, and ejects a printed fortune. During this process, SCP-XXXX will continue to play pre-recorded lines commonly found amongst similar [REDACTED]-made Zoltan machine.
Despite this interaction,, testing has concluded that SCP-XXXX and SCP-XXXX-A exhibit no discernable intelligence and has no capacity to communicate beyond the pre-recorded lines.
+++ **Fortunes**
The fortunes printed by SCP-XXXX are anomalous, and can be divided into 3 distinctive categories[[footnote]]From exhaustive testing, it can be concluded that all fortunes printed by SCP-XXXX are part of 1 of these 3 categories.[[/footnote]]:
* 64% of activations: a death prediction describing the manner and cause of user's death.
* 15% of activations: The precise date and time of the user's death.
* 21% of activations: message encouraging the recipient to “ride the Blue Steel Surfer”(See [[[SCP-112]]]), references currently under investigation.
+++ **Indestructibility**
Testing of the external casing of SCP-XXXX has demonstrated that it can be damaged by fire, erosion, rust, aging, or blunt force. However, SCP-XXXX-A and all internal components are documented to be impervious to fire, weather, explosions, and gunfire.
+++ **Repair Mechanism**
Testing has revealed that SCP-XXXX has as set self-repair mechanism:
When external damage occurs, SCP-XXXX-A exits the machine and moves at approximately 10.3km/h to acquire repair materials. It acquires materials by going to the nearest location where it can acquire materials needed for repair, and buying aforementioned materials with quarters. If it can’t buy materials, it will steal and salvage what it requires to return to mint condition.
SCP-XXXX-A will attempt to circumvent obstacles in its path. If an obstruction persists for 3-6 minutes, SCP-XXXX-A will escalate to lethal force, killing the obstructing individual via manual asphyxiation. After repairs are complete, SCP-XXXX-A returns to its enclosure.
++ **Testing Logs**
++++ Log XXXX-A: D-Class Fortune Test: Death Details
D-Class instructed to use SCP-XXXX. Fortune: “You will die to a big lizard’s tail in a science experiment.” D-Class died approx. 2 days later during an interaction with SCP-682 (See [[[SCP-682]]]). Autopsy results indicated death was caused by blunt force trauma to the frontal region of cephalon.
++++Log XXXX-B: D-Class Fortune Test: Death Time prediction
D-Class instructed to use SCP-XXXX. Fortune: “You will die in 5 days, 3 hours, and 41 seconds.” D-Class later died in holding cell. The time of death was exactly 5 days, 3 hours, and 41 seconds after receiving the fortune. Autopsy results indicate subject died of Cardiac failure.
++++Log XXXX-C: D-class Fortune Test: Death Time Predictions
D-Class was instructed to use SCP-XXXX. Fortune: "You will die in 382 days, 14 hours, and 11 seconds." Results: A note detailing this result was made in D-Class 4010's personal file.
++++ Log XXXX-D: D-Class Fortune Test: "Ride the Blue SteelSurfer"
D-Class was instructed to use SCP-XXXX. Result: "Ride the Blue Steel Surfer". Reading the fortune gave the D-Class personal knowledge to the existence and location of SCP-112(See Interview Log-XXXX-A). Result: D-Class personal was given Class-A amnestics to erase knowledge of SCP-112. Further testing of the fortune telling ability of SCP-XXXX requires medical staff to be present to administer Class-A amnestics when needed.
++++ Log XXXX-E: SCP-XXXX Purchasing Materials
In this test, a D-Class was instructed to damage SCP-XXXX, while another D-Class was posing to be selling the materials for repair for $10.00 in the containment unit. After SCP-XXXX was damaged, SCP-XXXX-A exited the external casing and appeared to purchase the materials, paying for the materials with exactly $10.00 in quarters. Later testing proved that the quarters SCP-XXXX-A used were genuine U.S. currency, with the production dates ranging from 1988 to present day.
++++ Log-XXXX-F: SCP-XXXX Interview
Site staff attempted to interview SCP-XXXX to determine how predictions are made, and how it acquired knowledge about SCP-682 and SCP-112. All attempts at interviews were unsuccessful. Conclusion: SCP-XXXX can't communicate outside of its pre-recorded lines. (See interview log-XXXX-B)
++++ Interview Log-XXXX-A
Interviewed: D-Class 3849
Interviewer: Dr.████████
Interview Date: 2025-1-10
Location: Observation Room at Site █████
Dr.████████:"You reported a hallucination after receiving a fortune from SCP-XXXX. Can you please describe the hallucination to me?"
D-Class 3849: "As soon as I touched the paper card, I immediately got an image of a massive wooden roller coaster in a abandoned theme park. I knew immediately it was named Blue Steelsurfer."
Dr.████████: "Did you want to ride it?"
D-Class 3849: "Hell no! I am not a roller coaster kinda guy."
Dr.████████: "Thank you for your time! Staff will escort you back to the holding area."
<end of recording>
++++ Interview Log-XXXX-B
Interviewed: SCP-XXXX and SCP-XXXX-A
Interviewer: Dr.████████
Interview Date: 2025-3-19
Location: Containment Chamber
Dr.████████ walks up to SCP-XXXX
SCP-XXXX: "Step right up to hear Zoltan speak your fortune!"
Dr.████████: "Can you hear me?"
SCP-XXXX didn't respond
Dr.████████:"How do you acquire your knowledge?"
SCP-XXXX: "Don't be shy now, the future can be yours to know!"
Dr. ████████: "Are you aware of a roller-coaster called The Blue Steel surfer?"
SCP-XXXX didn't respond.
<end of recording>
+++ Addenda
+++++ Addendum XXXX-1: Fortune paper
SCP-XXXX never runs out of paper. Despite thousands of uses, it constantly maintains a sufficient supply. Paper is also been tested to display no anomalous abilities, with the sole exception of fortunes detailing The Blue Steel surfer, other than the printed message.
+++++ Addendum XXXX-2: Inserted Money
Quarters inserted cannot be retrieved. If coins inserted are not genuine U.S. currency, it is promptly ejected through the coin return slot.
+++++ Addendum XXXX-3: Coin Authenticity
Coins dispensed by SCP-XXXX-A have been tested to be genuine U.S. quarters, spanning mint years 1988 to the present. The mechanism by which SCP-XXXX acquires and stores coins is unknown.
+++++ Addendum XXXX-4: Info-Hazard
SCP-XXXX has a chance of giving out fortunes that appear to impart classified knowledge of SCP-112. The method by which SCP-XXXX acquired this information is unknown. Personnel are reminded that this constitutes a potential information hazard.
+++++ Addendum XXXX-6: Ability to work without power
Though SCP-XXXX does not appeared to be powered through any obvious external source, it does not require power to function. Further testing reconmmend.
+++++ Addendum XXXX-7: Correlation or Causation
It is unknown whether SCP-XXXXs predictions influence events (causation) or simply reflect pre-existing outcomes (correlation). Ongoing observation and testing are in progress.
