Special Containment Procedures:
The Foundation’s primary directive regarding SCP-9000 is to prevent “Emulation” events in any public spaces with significant interpersonal interactions between individuals. Highly monitored areas should include high schools, universities, businesses, and community centers. In order to prevent an “Emulation” event, any uncontained individuals in Stage 3 of the SCP-9000 infection must be located by Foundation personnel and secured at all costs. Description:
SCP-9000 is a pattern of thinking that precedes abnormal behavior and physical alterations in affected individuals. Transmission of SCP-9000 occurs when unaffected individuals make direct visual contact with a Stage 3 SCP-9000 individual, after which they immediately lose all memory of the encounter.
When an SCP-9000-affected individual perceives themselves as lower in the human dominance hierarchy than another individual, they and the targeted individual in their mind will undergo a mental and physical transformation, entering Stage 1 of the SCP-9000 infection. Addendum 1.A
SCP-9000 Stage 1: Symptoms of a Stage 1 SCP-9000 infection are characterized by obsessive thoughts and behaviors surrounding an individual’s desire to emulate the other individual and achieve self-perceived improvement. The majority of documented cases involve individuals beginning to emulate the behaviors, interests, and clothing style of the targeted individual they aspire to become. In rare cases, highly impulsive subjects have taken actions to induce self-injury, such as using knives or other sharp objects in an attempt to carve their face to resemble that of another individual. Attempts to do so inevitably result in the subject’s death through blood loss. Neural imaging of Stage 1 subjects indicates abnormal hyperactivation of the anterior cingulate cortex pathways.
Additionally, the targeted individual in the subject’s mind will begin to exhibit similar obsessive thoughts, fixating on someone they aspire to be like. These secondary targets typically progress through Stage 2 and Stage 3 of the infection in a similar manner to the original subject.
SCP-9000 Stage 2: The transformation escalates to Stage 2 when physical symptoms begin to manifest. The individual's outer layers of skin will begin to peel off throughout their entire body. As this occurs, the individual appears to behave and speak extremely slowly, showing significant signs of fatigue. Individuals at this Stage will undergo a complete loss of personal identity, colloquially referred to as an “ego death”. When asked questions regarding themselves, subjects appear confused and will typically deny their own identity and remain hyperfixated on resembling the traits of the targeted individual. Individuals at this Stage will rapidly decrease in overall physical and cognitive functioning throughout their Stage 2 manifestation. This culminates in a halt of both physical and cognitive function, indicating progression to Stage 3.
SCP-9000 Stage 3: Stage 3 of infection is characterized by the expulsion of gastric contents, accompanied by approximately 2–3 L of blood. In numerous documented cases, subjects have also expelled biologically critical tissues, including connective and protective tissues surrounding internal organs. Following this, the subject’s body enters a state of total paralysis. While in a state of paralysis, the subjects’ skin will fall off in its entirety, exposing the underlying musculature and subdermal structures. Records indicate that Rowans left his home at 19:43 and did not return until 19:55. During this interval, Rowans encountered an unidentified Stage 3 SCP-9000-infected individual within the vicinity of Lakecrest Park.

But before you call this a success, understand me: this was never about containment. SCP-9000 wasn’t just a cognitohazard. It was the reflection of a sickness in us. The need to be someone else. Thoughts like “I need to be more like them. Then I would matter.”
