Specialized Containment Procedures – SCP-8396
SCP-8396 is housed within a 3 m × 3 m × 3 m airtight reinforced titanium-alloy cube, wall thickness 15 cm, internally insulated with triple-layer polymer composites. All weld seams are hermetically sealed. Internal atmospheric composition is monitored and regulated remotely.
Two sides of the cube are reinforced with sealed, cryogenically cooled wall panels maintained at subzero temperatures to slow the molecular activity of SCP-8396. These panels are powered by two (2) independent cryogenic generators located 30 feet (9.1 meters) from the containment chamber, operating in a redundant configuration to ensure uninterrupted cooling. Both units must undergo weekly inspections by authorized engineering personnel.
The remaining two sides of the cube serve specialized functions:
- Observation Side: Fitted with a reinforced transparent barrier, allowing researchers to monitor SCP-8396 and D-Class activity inside the containment chamber.
- Access Side: Airtight entry point leading to the facility’s transfer pathway.
**Airtight Access Pathway:**
The access side of SCP-8396’s containment cube connects to the D-Class briefing chamber via a 2.5 m long, 1.5 m wide airtight transfer corridor. The structure is composed of a 50 mm reinforced steel outer shell lined internally with 15 mm multi-layer polymer composites, forming a Class-A airtight seal. All panel joints utilize high-density fluoropolymer gaskets under vacuum compression to ensure zero atmospheric leakage.
The pathway is equipped with a dual interlocking Type-IV airlock system:
- Inner Door (ID-AX): Connects directly to the containment cube’s primary hatch.
- Outer Door (OD-BR): Opens into the D-Class briefing chamber.
Both doors are constructed from 80 mm blast-rated steel cores with triple-lip seal systems, and are secured by dual electromagnetic bolt arrays capable of withstanding 20,000 N tensile force. A PLC-based interlock system prevents both doors from being open simultaneously under any condition.
An ES-47 Environmental Monitoring Suite is mounted within the pathway, constantly reading temperature, air pressure, humidity, particulate levels, and gas toxicity. Should readings deviate by more than ±2% from safe parameters, the N2-DELTA purge array automatically floods the corridor with inert nitrogen gas, achieving full atmospheric displacement in under 3.5 seconds.
All pathway systems are supported by a dedicated UPS backup capable of maintaining full operation for up to 48 hours in the event of main power loss.
Mobile Task Force B-7 Security Detail:
Two (2) members of Mobile Task Force B-7 are permanently stationed at the outer airlock door of the Airtight Access Pathway. This position, designated Security Post AX-OBR, is manned in rotating 8-hour shifts to ensure uninterrupted coverage.
**Primary Role:**
- Oversee all testing procedures involving SCP-8396, ensuring compliance with approved experimental protocols.
- Prevent entry by any Foundation personnel who are not specifically authorized or do not possess Level 3 or higher security clearance.
- Maintain visual confirmation of SCP-8396’s state during any interaction or movement.
- In the event SCP-8396 breaches into the access pathway or briefing chamber, coordinate with re-containment teams to freeze and stabilize the anomaly for return to the containment cube.
**Tools & Equipment:**
- Type-F Cryonic Suppression Rifle – Primary tool for rapidly freezing SCP-8396 into a condensed, non-gaseous state for safe re-containment.
- Standard-Issue Foundation Sidearm – Secondary weapon for self-defense against hostile entities or personnel.
- Level 3+ Clearance Verification Scanner – Handheld ID/keycard reader used to confirm personnel authorization before granting access to the Airtight Access Pathway.
- Portable Environmental Monitor – Wrist-mounted device displaying real-time air composition, temperature, and SCP-8396 presence indicators.
- Encrypted Comms Unit – Linked directly to Site Security Command for instant breach reporting or clearance verification.
- CBRN Protective Suit (Level A) – Fully encapsulated, airtight suit with integrated gloves, boots, and full-face visor, paired with a positive-pressure SCBA (Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus) to prevent exposure to gaseous anomalies.
**Behaviour – SCP-8396**
When inactive, SCP-8396 maintains a slow, continuous movement within its containment chamber, either floating or gliding approximately 0.2–0.4 meters above the chamber floor. Motion appears smooth and unhurried, with no visible propulsion or disturbance to surrounding air.
SCP-8396 is sentient, exhibiting awareness of its surroundings and responding to visual and auditory stimuli. It will often turn or shift to directly face personnel observing from the viewing area.
If any individual enters the Airtight Access Pathway, SCP-8396 will immediately transition from its idle state to an active state and begin engaging in behaviour consistent with its anomalous function. During this time, a localized domain manifests around SCP-8396; the range of this domain cannot be visually perceived from the inside, though thin, drifting lines of grey-black smoke are visible from outside, marking its perimeter. The exact mechanics and effects of SCP-8396’s domain are documented in the Description section.
**Interview Log 8396-07**
Interviewed: SCP-8396 (via D-2154 intermediary)
Interviewer: Dr. ██████ (monitoring remotely from Observation Room)
Forward: D-2154 was equipped with a head-mounted camera, microphone, and earpiece for communication. Subject was instructed to breathe normally upon domain activation. Objective: obtain baseline information regarding SCP-8396’s self-awareness, origin, and control over its domain.
+++++ <Begin Log>
ㅤ
+++++ [00:00:08]
+++++ Door to Airtight Access Pathway seals. External sensors confirm domain activation; particulate sensors detect airborne composition change consistent with SCP-8396’s anomalous emission. D-2154 inhales normally. Heart rate rises slightly.
+++++ D-2154: …Okay. It’s not the chamber anymore.
+++++ Dr. ██████: Describe what you see.
+++++ D-2154: Looks like an old study. Big fireplace, shelves full of books, thick carpet. I can hear the fire crackling. Feels… warm in here.
ㅤ
+++++ [00:00:24]
+++++ A man sits in a leather armchair beside the fire. Human in appearance, face partly in shadow. Voice calm and steady.
+++++ Unknown Male: You came in breathing. That’s good.
+++++ Dr. ██████: Ask who it is.
+++++ D-2154: Who are you?
+++++ Unknown Male: The one making this for you.
+++++ D-2154: Making… what?
+++++ Unknown Male: This place. The warmth. The quiet.
ㅤ
+++++ [00:00:44]
+++++ Dr. ██████: Ask how it’s doing this.
+++++ D-2154: How are you making me see all this?
+++++ Unknown Male: You breathed. That’s all it takes. The rest… is me.
+++++ D-2154: So it’s in the air?
+++++ Unknown Male: Yes. You’re in it. It’s in you.
ㅤ
+++++ [00:01:05]
+++++ Dr. ██████: Ask if it can change what you see.
+++++ D-2154: Could you make me see something else right now?
+++++ Unknown Male: If I wanted to. But you like this, don’t you?
+++++ D-2154: …It’s nicer than where I usually am.
+++++ Unknown Male: Then why would we change it?
ㅤ
+++++ [00:01:26]
+++++ Dr. ██████: Ask why it wants you here.
+++++ D-2154: Why do you want me to stay here?
+++++ Unknown Male: Because I like when they stay. It’s better when you’re close.
ㅤ
+++++ [00:01:41]
+++++ From outside the domain, D-2154 has only shifted slightly toward SCP-8396’s real position. Inside the illusion, the man gestures toward a low table with a pot of tea and two cups.
+++++ Unknown Male: Sit. Have something warm.
+++++ D-2154: …Doc, it’s offering me tea.
+++++ Dr. ██████: Decline and keep questioning.
+++++ D-2154: No thanks. Where exactly is this place?
+++++ Unknown Male: Nowhere you’ve been before. But you can stay as long as you like.
ㅤ
+++++ [00:02:05]
+++++ D-2154: How many people have you shown this to?
+++++ Unknown Male: Enough to know most don’t want to leave.
+++++ D-2154: And the ones who do?
+++++ Unknown Male: I make them want to stay.
ㅤ
+++++ [00:02:24]
+++++ The man leans forward slightly, still calm.
+++++ Unknown Male: You’ve had hard days, haven’t you? You could rest here. No noise. No orders. No one watching you.
+++++ D-2154: …
+++++ Dr. ██████: That’s enough. Prepare to leave.
+++++ D-2154: Where’s the exit?
+++++ Unknown Male: Why do you need an exit? You’re safe.
ㅤ
+++++ [00:02:45]
+++++ Dr. ██████: Three steps back.
ㅤ
+++++ From D-2154’s perspective, the study remains flawless and real until his heel crosses the domain’s edge. The transition is instantaneous — the study disappears, replaced by the containment chamber. SCP-8396 is in its standard form, gliding at the center.

Closing Statement: SCP-8396 maintained a perfectly consistent illusory environment with no perceptible flaws throughout the encounter. The entity attempted multiple times to prolong the subject’s stay through comfort, emotional appeal, and offers of hospitality. It admitted control over all aspects of the perceived environment and confirmed the effect is induced through inhalation of an airborne substance.

+++ **The Illusory Smoke**
**Description:**
SCP-8396 is a 2.2-meter tall greyish cloud of smoke. The smoke is made from an unknown gas. The gas has no smell and is not harmful to living creatures. In this form, it is unable to communicate, but it can understand everything that happens around it. It wants to be in power like a leader, enjoying the situations humans willingly place themselves in for its sake. It is unable to be harmed with any weapons that are meant to harm creatures with a physical body. Weapons that deal with biological, chemical, or radiological anomalies can stun the anomaly.
**SCP-8396-1**
SCP-8396 can create a domain around itself by emitting black smoke from its body (SCP-8396-1). Inside its domain, the anomaly releases a gas that affects any living creature. Any of the humans that come in contact with the gas will see the things that the anomaly wants them to see. Within the domain, SCP-8396 will appear as a human being that is there to “help” the people that are within the domain. It can speak any language. It can change its form even if there are humans present within SCP-8396-1. The domain does not release any noise or smell from the inside to the outside. From the outside, the domain’s range can’t be seen, nor can it be seen from the inside; only thin lines of smoke can be seen from the outside of the range. SCP-8396 is always aware of who enters or exits the domain.
**SCP-8396-2**
The illusions inside SCP-8396-1 are created by SCP-8396 and will look like whatever the anomaly wants it to look like. Most of the time, the illusions will appear as world-ending scenarios where SCP-8396 will appear as a savior that will always try and get the people to the center of SCP-8396-1. When someone tries to leave the domain accidentally or after realizing they are inside a domain, then SCP-8396 will create illusions to try and get that subject back to the center. The same thing will happen to the people that have entered SCP-8396-1.
**SCP-8396-3**
The people within SCP-8396-1 are subjected to the gas of SCP-8396 and will see things that will most of the time look like world-ending scenarios. (Exp. A zombie outbreak, a giant earthquake, a portal to Hell opening, …) The illusions will not harm SCP-8396-3 but play tricks on their mind that they think they have been affected by whatever is happening. SCP-8396 will then appear to them and “help” them by bringing them to a perceived safe haven, for example, a “safe place,” and keep them there. The smoke is what makes the illusions happen, and when it is gone, if it collapses due to too much "stress" or SCP-8396 wants to close SCP-8396-1, SCP-8396 loses the power to manipulate people into seeing whatever it wants. SCP-8396-3 has been often questioned, but there have always been mixed answers about what SCP-8396 looks like, or what they have felt within SCP-8396-1.Excerpts of note:
- Prevent entry by any Foundation personnel who are not specifically authorized or do not possess Level 3 or higher security clearance.
