SCP-8835 - The Bagpipe
Security Clearance Level 5 (Thaumiel) - MTF D-Class assets may know of existence and basic function. Origin restricted to dedicated site research team and O5 council due to immense geopolitical ramifications and risk of restarting [Redacted]. Significant risk of increased threat from hostile organizations and destabilizing foundation relationship with various governments.
Object Class: Euclid
Secondary Class: Ticonderoga
Disruption Class -
Class III Causality threat to utilizing personnel (see below)
Class V Cognitohazard - Significant alteration of affected physical and psychological function with visual and audio reception, even for inanimate objects.
Special Containment Procedures:
SCP-8835 Does not pose an immediate risk to personnel but, due to the high strategic value of SCP-8835, must be secured in a locked fireproof and hermetically sealed storage facility at SCP site 44 with 24 hour armed surveillance. This method is not a form of "containment" for the object cannot be fully contained, as it will teleport upon activation with no known countermeasures (including SRA's). This measure is to prevent acquisition or destruction from hostile actors and decomposition/degradation of SCP-8835-2.
D Class personnel in MTF Sierra-6 ("Midnight Watch") are to be clandestinely embedded within the UK Royal Regiment of Scotland and any combat force with significant Scottish background. The minimum percentage of racial make-up is yet to be determined. Personnel are to be recruited from United Kingdom military correctional centers (Glasshouses) with majority Scottish ancestry. These personnel are to ascertain the location of SCP-8835-1 and attempt to acquire during high-intensity/high casualty combat. Participation in the program will constitute a pardon of crimes and utilization of SCP-8835 will place personnel in consideration for military commendation. Observation and sample collection/analysis MUST be completed in active combat situation. A mobile field site must be set up to analyze samples collected.
The UK ministry of Defense must notify the Foundation site 44 director 48 hours prior to commencing planned high-intensity military operations. The site 44 director must then notify the 05 Council. The Foundation must inform UK Ministry of Defense immediately upon activation of SCP-8835.
Object Description:
The primary object appears as a set of early Scottish bagpipes with construction resembling early medieval design (SCP-8835-1):
- Dark brown sheep-skin leather bag
- [Redacted] stock, mouthpiece and furniture
- No markings whatsoever
The bagpipe exhibits heavy wear and appearance of age, but according to Carbon-Dating samples the leather bag material is no more than 20-30 years old. The wood, however is more difficult and is dated [Redacted] older. The species of wood is also not native to Scotland and had to be sourced from [Redacted]. The leading hypothesis is the bagpipe will temporally revert to this early state after each use. Battlefield reports of the early use of this bagpipe indicate that it was heavily damaged on several occasions but the damage is never evident after rematerializing again.
While not "activated" the bagpipe will return and rest on top of an extremely old and simple square unfinished oak table (SCP-8835-2). The table shows craftsmanship of early medieval Scotland with extremely spartan, but well made design. The table's size is exactly one and a half Scottish ell cubed (1141mm). The table's wood material was carbon dated to the early 13th century.
Outside of its activated state, SCP-8835-1 will remain immobile and fixed atop SCP-8835-2 as if petrified or in stasis. Even significant usage of force will not deflect, lift or damage even the nominally pliable leather material. SCP-8835-1 will rest on SCP-8835-2 in the EXACT SAME position upon every return, with the working components laying on SCP-8835-2's surface, unable to be used. However, SCP-8835-2 can be lifted and relocated with the anticipated/appropriate effort with SCP-8835-1 acting as if adhered to the surface. SCP-8835-2 exhibits normal susceptibility to damage as opposed to SCP-8835-1. Site cryptoarchaeolgists speculate that damaging/destroying SCP-8835-2 will result in SCP-8835-1's destruction as well. This is evidenced by the similar level of wear and damage comparable between the objects in the deactivated state.
Top Secret documents supplied by the UK Ministry of Defense and MI5 have conjected that this Bagpipe has been employed in EVERY major battle with Scottish involvement since the First War of Scottish Independence. Addendum: However, with the successful analysis of the material, we conclude SCP-8835 is quite older. We speculate that SCP-8835 was instrumental in the Celtic resistance to Scandenavian Viking invasion, placing it as early as the 7th-8th centuries. This conjecture is contingent that SCP-8835 was crafted by Humans.
The documents indicate that SCP-8835-1 will manifest conspicuously amongst Scottish infantry during high-intensity, potentially historically significant, combat actions. SCP-8835-1 will appear as an instrument made from a more contemporary period, even to video recording equipment. Upon sighting, the subject will experience an overwhelming urge to begin playing. This person (SCP-8835-3) will play with masterful skill, even with no prior knowledge or experience in the instrument. These conditions only manifest in personnel with primarily Scottish ancestry. Any others will neither experience the urge nor preternatural ability to play. We speculate that SCP-8835 is either directly controlling the mind or activating a racial subconscious skill and desire.
All friendly forces within "audible" range (SCP-8835-4) will spontaneously experience the following effects regardless of ethnic background(Class V Cognitohazard):
- Complete elimination of pain stimuli, even with egregious bodily injury
- Complete elimination of self preservation instinct or fear
- Feeling of serene calm even in face of overwhelmingly traumatic combat environment
- Significantly increased physical resilience in SCP-8835-4, with numerous instances of continued combat with otherwise immediately terminal wounds and blood loss. Visual recordings routinely show SCP-8835-4 continuing fighting with one or more missing limbs and gaping bleeding wounds to both chest and head. Only after near complete bodily destruction does the affected finally succumb to their injuries.
- Marked improvement in combat prowess, strength, and marksmanship
- Equipment and vehicles wielded or used by SCP-8835-4 NEVER experience malfunction, even with prior evidence of imminent failure.
- Small arms wielded by SCP-8835-4 are able to discharge 80-100% more ammunition before reload, even well beyond designed magazine capacity. This effect does not manifest in heavy ordinance.
Interestingly, SCP-8835-3 does not experience any of these effects
This range is estimated to be roughly 2 kilometers, even when combat conditions would clearly drown the sound. We postulate that the effects could be psyonically rather than audio transmitted. Interviews with SCP-8835-4 personnel after the action indicate they hear the music clearly over the clamour of the battle, with descriptions of it being often "At the front of the mind".
These effects immediately cease when the SCP-8835-3 ceases playing. All SCP-8835-4 personnel who have experienced wounds now react to them normally. All SCP-8835-4 personnel with terminal injuries immediately perish. Any SCP-8835-4 who leave the effective range will revert as well. It is strongly recommended to continue playing until wounded SCP-8835-4 individuals are stabilized by medical personnel. SCP-8835-3 will feel intense fatigue and will likely be rendered into catatonic sleep upon cessation of playing. After waking, long term effects include extreme PTSD, near complete amnesia of the event and often suicidal ideation. Dosing of class A or B amnestics and routine monitoring is prescribed for all forces involved.
It is CRITICAL that SCP-8835-3 DOES NOT stop playing until combat is COMPLETELY RESOLVED. Failure to do so will inevitably result in SCP-8835-3 experiencing a terminal combat injury. This indicates a direct Causality threat
to the SCP-8835-3 user. It is for this reason that MTF-Sierra-6 will actively seek to acquire SCP-8835-1.
As soon as SCP-8835-3 releases grip of SCP-8835-1 either through cease of combat action, injury, or death of SCP-8835-3, SCP-8835-1 will IMMEDIATELY teleport back to SCP-8835-2. Any damage, blemish, or dirt acquired in the action will be reversed upon return.
