**Item #:** SCP-8838
**Object Class:** Euclid
**Special Containment Procedures:** Site-112 has been constructed around SCP-8838. No civilian is permitted within a 10-kilometer radius of Site-112. All public access routes into the area are to be permanently closed under the cover of an indefinite chemical contamination zone.
Any instance of SCP-8838-B1 detected outside of SCP-8838 or SCP-8838-A is to be incinerated on sight. Instances of SCP-8838-B2 are to be contained and relocated to Site-[REDACTED] in terrariums with an atmosphere replicating that of the Carboniferous period, for comparative study against the fossil record.
D-class personnel will perform all tasks requiring direct contact with fauna or flora associated with SCP-8838. All expeditions into SCP-8838 require written authorization from Level 4 (A-Class) personnel or Level 3 (B-Class) personnel acting under direct authority of the O5 Council.
No digital imagery or video recordings of SCP-8838-B1 are to be created, transmitted, or viewed. (See Addendum 8838-3.) Any accidental footage must be immediately destroyed under Level-4 protocol.
Any auditory hallucinations or voices reported by Site-112 personnel are to be logged and disregarded. All logs will be reviewed by Cognitohazard Specialists at an appropriate time.
**Description:** SCP-8838 is an anomalous freshwater lake located in [REDACTED], Italy, with a measured depth exceeding 5,000 kilometers. Despite this depth, water temperature remains stable and does not increase as expected. Similarly, water pressure remains constant regardless of depth. The origin of SCP-8838 and the nature of its anomalous properties remain unknown.
Instances of SCP-8838-B1 and SCP-8838-B2 occasionally manifest at or near the shoreline of SCP-8838. The mechanism of these manifestations has not been determined.
At a depth of approximately 3,000 kilometers lies SCP-8838-A, a large submerged cave containing a central air pocket. Within SCP-8838-A is a singular instance of SCP-8838-B1 — a living specimen of Lepidodendron, a genus of tree known from the Carboniferous period (approximately 359–299 million years ago). Contact with SCP-8838-B1 results in any life form possessing chimpanzee-level intelligence or higher being irreversibly converted into a new instance of SCP-8838-B1 through a process not yet understood. This process is believed to be responsible for the disappearance of multiple Foundation personnel (see Addenda 8838-1 and 8838-2).
Viewing a digital image of SCP-8838-B1 also triggers this effect: any life form of chimpanzee-level intelligence or higher who views such an image is converted into a new instance of SCP-8838-B1. The underlying mechanism is presumed memetic or cognitohazardous in nature. (See Addendum 8838-3.)
SCP-8838-B2 refers to various species of fauna consistent with known life forms from the Carboniferous period. These entities display no anomalous properties beyond their temporal displacement and the inability to survive in the modern Earth's atmosphere, leading to asphyxiation without intervention. SCP-8838-B2 instances are currently classified as Safe.
SCP-8838 came to the Foundation's attention following the disappearance of local farmers and subsequent reports of prehistoric flora and fauna in the surrounding area. Class-A amnestics have been administered to the local population, and the region has been evacuated under the cover of an ongoing chemical leak.
Current Foundation hypotheses suggest that SCP-8838 may represent a spatial anomaly, temporal rift, or preserved biosphere linked to the Carboniferous period. No conclusive evidence supporting any single theory has been obtained.
**Addendum 8838-1:**
14:12 — Team-A descends in standard Foundation science submarine.
18:32 — Team-A notes water changes color to pink.
22:54 — Team-A reaches SCP-8838-A.
22:56 — Team-A observes a single instance of SCP-8838-B1 in the center of an air pocket inside SCP-8838-A, measuring 25 meters in height.
23:13 — Contact with Team-A lost.
**Addendum 8838-2:**
08:45 — D-33843 descends in a customized submarine to recover Team-A.
09:13 — D-33843 notes that the water changes color to pink.
10:29 — D-33843 reaches SCP-8838-A.
11:13 — D-33843 observes five instances of SCP-8838-B1: one in the center of the chamber (25 meters in height), and four smaller instances. Genetic analysis confirms biological material consistent with Team-A personnel within the smaller instances.
11:14 — Contact with D-33843 lost.
**Addendum 8838-3:**
08:45 — Remote drone dispatched to SCP-8838.
09:00 — Drone reaches SCP-8838-A.
09:15 — Returned footage from the drone causes all viewers to be converted into instances of SCP-8838-B1.
09:30 — Drone self-destructed under orders from Site-112 command.
**682/8838-B1 cross test**
08:15 — Digital image of SCP-8838-B1 presented to SCP-682.
08:16 — SCP-682 states that the image is "boring" and that it had "already seen those trees before." No anomalous effects observed.
08:20 — Test concluded. SCP-682 unaffected.
