**Item #:** SCP-8972
**Object Class:** Euclid
**Special Containment Procedures:**
SCP-8972 is to be kept in a sealed, climate-controlled anomalous object vault at Site-73. Interaction with the object is only permitted with written approval from at least two Level 4 personnel and successful completion of Class-B memetic resistance screening.
All generated card materials are to be stored in individual containment sleeves composed of reinforced anti-cognitohazard polymer. Under no circumstances are cards to be scanned, copied, or digitized. Use of SCP-8972 in "duels" is prohibited outside of approved testing chambers equipped with fail-safe memetic containment systems and emergency incineration protocols.
---
**Description:**
SCP-8972 is a black metal trading card tin measuring 28 cm × 20 cm × 6 cm. The front lid features embossed gold artwork depicting a hooded figure holding a quill above a luminous game board. Branding reads: *“Master Duel: Eternal Format – Creator’s Vault.”* No records exist of any commercial product matching SCP-8972’s appearance or title.
When opened, SCP-8972 produces a random assortment of trading cards and a rulebook written in a cognitohazardous script. Despite the language being undecipherable under standard analysis, all observers report an innate understanding of the game and its rules upon exposure.
The cards generated fall into one of several archetypes:
- Conceptual Entities (characters/creatures)
- Temporal Events (action-based spells)
- Containment Protocols (defensive/control strategies)
- Foundation Assets (locations/support)
- Reality Fractures (wildcards)
- [New] Wish-Linked Anomalies
---
**Anomalous Mechanics:**
SCP-8972 exerts a mild compulsion effect, escalating in strength with prolonged contact. This compulsion drives subjects to initiate a “match” against another willing or present participant. Upon initiation, a semi-holographic game arena forms and is impervious to outside observation until the conclusion of the match.
Match outcomes result in significant reality-altering effects. Winners may experience temporary beneficial anomalies (e.g., rapid healing, enhanced cognition), while losers frequently suffer psychological erosion, memory corruption, or physical transformation. On occasion, individuals have been erased from local reality for periods ranging from several hours to permanently.
---
**Notable Card Log Entry:**
**Card Name:** *SCP Card – The Collector*
**Category:** Wish-Linked Anomaly / Conceptual Entity
**Appearance:** Card art depicts a man appearing approximately 29 years of age, with short brown hair, green eyes, and a smug smile. He is seated at a table, holding cards in one hand while gesturing with the other.
**Observed Effects:**
- Upon activation, the opponent of the player who summons “The Collector” begins exhaling blue flames. This process continues until the subject physically and cognitively transforms into a copy of the figure depicted on the card.
- Transformed individuals (designated Instance-XXXX-C) will describe themselves as "The Collector," exhibiting identical speech patterns and affect.
- When interviewed post-transformation, D-Class subjects described “The Collector” exactly as portrayed in the card image. However, all uninvolved observers (including researchers) described the entity only as a featureless humanoid silhouette made of black smoke.
- Once transformation is complete, The Collector will address the summoning player directly and ask: *“Do you have a wish?”*
If the player responds affirmatively:
- The Collector will state: *“If you win, you get what you desire. If you lose… you join the others.”*
- Matches played against The Collector follow a modified version of the normal SCP-8972 rule set, with increased difficulty and the appearance of entirely unknown cards.
Failure to respond or attempting to leave the game chamber after the card has been activated results in immediate disappearance of the summoning player. Sixty-nine (69) individuals are currently unaccounted for following such events.
**Addendum XXXX.3 – The Wish Incident:**
On ██/██/████, D-9347 successfully defeated The Collector. When prompted for their wish, D-9347 requested, *“Freedom from the Foundation.”*
Immediately following the win condition, D-9347’s body was inverted inside-out by an unknown force and expired within seconds. The Collector then turned toward observation glass, smiled, and dematerialized. No containment measures proved effective during or after the encounter.
Containment or neutralization of The Collector card remains **impossible**. All appearances of the card now result in mandatory lockdown and deployment of mobile memetic hazard teams. The card has since regenerated in SCP-8972’s deck 11 times despite attempts at destruction.
---
**Addendum XXXX.4 – Research Memo:**
> “The Collector is not a card. It's a contract.”
> – Dr. O'Shaughnessy, Head of SCP-8972 Investigative Taskforce
---
**Object Status:**
Reclassification to **Keter** pending O5 review. Use of SCP-8972 in live testing is now suspended indefinitely.
