**Item #****:** SCP-8157
**Object/ Anomaly Class:** Keter
**Special Containment Procedures:** Due to the non-physical nature of SCP-8157 and its global, unpredictable manifestations, containment is currently deemed impossible. Events do seem to exclusively occur in remote desert regions worldwide, and seem to be of predatory nature. Following a recorded incident with D Class ██████, the below instructions must be applied, and anomaly must be further researched.
* Public Misinformation
All reports of SCP-8157 activity must continue to be exposed, or published through coordinated misinformation campaigns. Sightings are to be attributed to natural phenomena such as mirages, common videos circulated on Social Media about Ghost appearances, bioluminescent organisms, or atmospheric anomalies. Foundation agents embedded in meteorological, astronomical, and local law enforcement organizations are to monitor, discredit, and redirect civilian reports towards foundation personnel and await further instructions. Civilians witnessed displaying persistent interest in SCP-8157 are to be apprehended, their personal items confiscated, administered Class-C amnestics, and released to their original location.
* Foundation Personnel Protocol
Should any foundation personnel be tasked with investigating reported SCP-8157 sightings. Agents must maintain in constant eye of sight within one another. All field operations in desert regions must include at least three personnel to reduce the risk of solitary exposure. All agents must record all instances of the occurring phenomenon, and report back to foundation researches with Level 3 clearance or higher.
* Survival and Disruption Protocol:
The following procedure, designated "Protocol Lantern-Break," has been developed to survive SCP-8157 encounters and induce the fading of SCP-8157 instances.
# Step 1: Immediate Disruption:
Upon sighting SCP-8157 instances, individuals must immediately begin loud auditory disruptions, such as shouting, chanting, or producing high-decibel noises (e.g., using air horns, whistles, or portable speakers if available). Simultaneously, perform exaggerated bodily gestures, including rapid arm waving, jumping, or erratic movements. This is to be performed at best, while retreating to a safe location, such as a motor vehicle, or until no longer in line of sight. This has been proven to be effective towards self-preservation, as the predatory nature of SCP-8157 will continue to interfere with the subject's judgments, until said subject has been abducted by SCP-8157
# Step 2: Sustained Effort to Fade:
Continue disruptions for a minimum of 5 minutes without pausing. Field reports indicate that sustained, synchronized auditory and physical disruptions can cause SCP-8157 instances to dim progressively and in most cases, vanish entirely. Portable audio devices emitting frequencies between 100-150 Hz have shown preliminary success in accelerating the fading process.
# Step 3: Post-Encounter Measures:
After SCP-8157 instances fade or retreat, mark the location with a GPS beacon and evacuate the area immediately. Report the encounter to Foundation personnel for monitoring. Individuals must undergo a 72-hour quarantine to monitor for residual memetic effects, such as lingering urges to wander or recurring dreams of amber lights.
//Note:// Solitary travelers are at extreme risk. If alone, prioritize continuous shouting and movement while signaling for rescue via non-visual means (e.g., radio, GPS). Do not attempt to approach or investigate SCP-8157 instances under any circumstances.
//Research Restrictions:// No personnel are to attempt direct interaction with SCP-8157 manifestations without O5 approval. Experimental deployments of autonomous rovers to approach SCP-8157 instances, as well as drones and other machine-operated audio and video recordings have been approved, but all units have ceased functioning upon reaching a recorded 500-meter threshold, with no recoverable data.
//Monitoring Network:// A global network of automated observation posts have been established in high-risk desert regions. These posts are equipped with infrared, ultraviolet, and electromagnetic sensors to detect SCP-8157 activity. Data is relayed to Site-[REDACTED] for analysis, though current technology has failed to predict manifestations. Personnel assigned to AOP-XXXX maintenance must operate in teams of no fewer than four and adhere to Protocol Lantern-Break during evening, midnight, and early morning hours.
**Description:** SCP-8157 designates a randomly and unpredictably occurring phenomenon, involving the appearance of flickering, lantern-like lights observed exclusively in desert environments worldwide. These lights manifest as clusters of pale, amber-colored illuminations. SCP-8157 instances appear randomly in the middle of the night, typically between ████ and 04:00 hours local time, and exhibit subtle, rhythmic pulsations while hovering approximately 1-2 meters above the ground. The lights are often accompanied by subtle environmental anomalies, including localized temperature drops (2-5°C below ambient), faint static discharges in the surrounding air, a sense of dread, and a feeling of "feeling unsafe".
SCP-8157 instances exert a potent anomalous memetic effect, compelling individuals within visual range (approximately 2 km) to approach them. Affected individuals report an overwhelming sense of curiosity, urgency, or a compulsion to "follow the lights," often describing them as "calming", "calling", or "guiding." This effect intensifies with prolonged exposure, overriding rational decision-making and self-preservation instincts. Victims who reach a distance of approximately 500 meters from any observer—effectively becoming isolated—vanish without a trace. No physical remains, equipment, or other evidence of the individual’s presence's ever existence on Earth, including any record of their names, documents (and so on), have ever been recovered, even with extensive searches using ground-penetrating radar and thermal imaging.
Analysis of victim profiles indicates no consistent demographic pattern, though SCP-8157 appears to preferentially target individuals in small groups or alone, with larger groups (10 or more) reporting fewer instances of memetic influence. The phenomenon’s manifestations are unpredictable but have been documented in deserts including the Sahara, Gobi, Mojave, Atacama, and Namib, with a noted preference for regions with minimal human activity. Attempts to correlate SCP-8157 activity with environmental, astronomical, or geological factors have yielded no conclusive patterns.
SCP-8157 is vulnerable to disruption through loud auditory stimuli (e.g., shouting, clapping, or mechanical noise) and rapid physical movements (e.g., waving, jumping, or erratic gestures). Sustained application of these disruptions, as outlined in Protocol Lantern-Break, can cause SCP-8157 instances to dim, flicker erratically, and, in some documented cases, disappear entirely. The mechanism behind this vulnerability is unknown but may involve sensory overload or interference with an unidentified energy source sustaining the phenomenon.
**Addendum 8157-3:** Research Notes Dr. Elena Martinez, Lead Researcher: "The development of Protocol Lantern-Break is a breakthrough, though its 73% success rate underscores its limitations. The random midnight appearances, coupled with environmental anomalies like temperature drops, suggest SCP-8157 may be tied to a localized energy phenomenon or an extradimensional entity with specific activation conditions. The preferential targeting of small groups or solitary individuals points to a possible predatory intelligence, though we lack evidence of sentience. Experiments with low-frequency audio (100-150 Hz) show promise in accelerating the fading process, but solitary encounters remain nearly 100% fatal. We’re exploring whether SCP-8157 instances are projections of a central source or independent entities."
**Addendum 8157-4:** Historical Reports Archival research has uncovered historical accounts potentially linked to SCP-8157, predating Foundation documentation:
Circa 12th Century, Sahara Desert: Arabic manuscripts describe "wandering flames" luring nomads into the dunes during midnight hours. Survivors attributed their escape to loud prayers and communal dancing, consistent with Protocol Lantern-Break.
1876, Gobi Desert: A Qing Dynasty explorer’s journal mentions "ghostly lanterns" seen at 02:00 hours, leading to the disappearance of three caravan members. The group’s use of gongs reportedly dimmed the lights, though not before losses occurred.
1934, Mojave Desert: A prospector’s letter, recovered by Foundation agents, describes "flickering lights" at 03:15 hours that "called like a siren." The prospector’s partner vanished after approaching, while the prospector’s loud cursing and rock-throwing caused the lights to fade.
These accounts suggest SCP-8157has been active for centuries, with consistent vulnerabilities to auditory and physical disruptions. The Foundation’s lack of earlier documentation may be due to the phenomenon’s remote locations and the absence of surviving witnesses.
**O5-█ Directive:** Protocol "Lantern-Break" is to be disseminated to all desert-operational MTFs immediately. Proposals for baiting SCP-8157with D-Class personnel are under review, but the risk of escalating its activity or triggering a mass manifestation event is yet to be uncovered. Continue remote observation, prioritize survivor recovery, and refine predictive models based on electromagnetic data."
Note: Personnel are reminded that SCP-8157remains uncontained. Exercise extreme caution in desert operations, particularly during midnight hours (████-04:00). All personnel operating in high-risk zones must carry portable audio devices and be trained in Protocol Lantern-Break.
