**Item #:** SCP-8648
**Object Class:** Keter
**Special Containment Procedures:** SCP 8648 is to be kept in an airtight, temperature controlled, pressurized, and moisture controlled containment chamber, 4m x 4m x 4m (13.1ft x 13.1ft x 13.1ft). To avoid damage to the chamber, it must be constructed from alloys resistant to extreme temperatures (see incident 8648-2). The containment chamber must be kept constantly at a temperature below the freezing point of water (0 degrees celsius, [32 degrees fahrenheit]). If a failure to maintain this temperature occurs, an automated system will deploy pure liquid nitrogen into the containment chamber to buy time for the system to be repaired. In the event of a containment breach, a sprinkler system can be used to deploy liquid nitrogen in the area around the chamber as well. The containment chamber is to be filled with a large amount of air to keep the chamber at a constant high air pressure. This will both inhibit SCP-8648’s ability to phase change, as well as make it difficult for SCP-8648 to travel from this high pressure area to the facility’s lower pressure when in gas form. SCP-8648’s chamber has also been outfitted with a specially designed dehumidifier, which sucks out all moisture within the chamber without letting SCP-8648 through. Following incident 8648-1, SCP-8648’s containment chamber is to be kept on a ‘shake table’, which can be controlled to vibrate the entirety of the chamber when necessary. The Container chamber is to be outfitted with pressure and temperature sensors, as well as special nitrogen filled lighting fixtures. Only specially outfitted guards and containment specialists are permitted to come within a 30 meter (98.3 foot) radius. No food or drink are allowed within a 90 meter (295.2 foot) radius.
**Description:** SCP-8648 is an entity composed entirely of regular H2O. Chemical analysis has found no other elements in SCP-8648’s makeup, not even contaminants that are found in most fresh water sources. SCP-8648 is able to spontaneously change between the 3 most common states of matter, solid, liquid, and gas (ice, water, and steam). These phase changes are entirely controlled by SCP-8648, and it uses this ability strategically. Additionally, it cannot reach an ‘absolute 0’ state nor can it generate heat above 205 celsius (401 fahrenheit).
Well SCP-8648 has shown a capability to change its physical appearance, it typically takes the shape of a humanoid entity 2.5 meters tall with a 3 meter arm span. When hostile, SCP-8648 will often continuously change shape to its advantage (extra arms, sharp tail, wall, etc). The only known way to prevent SCP-8648 from being able to move, shape shift, or phase change is to constantly keep it at a temperature below freezing.
Although SCP-8648 is fully sentient and autonomous, its movement is still dictated by the H20 molecules it is composed of. In order for it to move when in solid (ice) form, is it to change small areas of its body into liquid. The areas act as ‘joints’, allowing SCP-8648 to have a degree of motion in each segment.
SCP-8648 is extremely hostile and violent to all forms of sentient life it encounters. It consistently takes all opportunities to breach containment and escape foundation custody. SCP-8648 has also displayed a certain level of intelligence. While attempts to have SCP-8648 complete an IQ test were unsuccessful, foundation researchers have estimated it possesses the intelligence roughly equivalent to a typical human adult. Despite this, SCP-8648 has never been able to communicate with foundation researchers, though whether this is due to an inability to do so or just a desire to not engage with them is unknown at this time.
When SCP-8648 comes into contact with any form of H2O, SCP-8648 incorporates it into its composition. This can be through moisture in the air, as well as water found within biological organisms. For this reason, no form of water is allowed anywhere near SCP-8648’s containment chamber as to prevent contamination.
When SCP-8648 is exposed to biological life forms it views as ‘sentient’ (henceforth to be referred to as the ‘victim’), it will immediately enter a hostile state and attack the victim. SCP-8648 may go about this in several ways, including but not limited to: cutting, burning, blunt force with pressurized gas, and induced hypothermia. Once the victim is killed, SCP-8648 will absorb the moisture from their body. This leaves the victim’s appearance similar to that of Ancient Egyption mummies.
Incident log 8648-1: On [REDACTED], SCP-8648 breached containment and killed [REDACTED] members of staff. The cause of this breach was found to be a critical oversight in the containment procedures. It is believed that SCP-8648 strategically stayed in a fixed position during activation of the temperature controls. This lack of movement inhibited ice crystals forming within SCP-8648, allowing it to move. After about 108 hours of waiting, SCP-8648 made a sudden and violent movement, disabling the temperature control module. Though this sudden movement caused the remaining liquid water in SCP-8648 to instantly freeze, this soon remelted allowing it to breach containment. SCP-8648 phased into a gas and was able to travel through the light fixtures, escaping its containment chamber. After approximately 18 minutes, presumably so that a large amount of staff had entered the area, SCP-8648 took the form of a humanoid made of ice and began attacking those present. Mobile Task Force [REDACTED] was called to the scene, but SCP-8648 turned back into a gas and raised the air pressure in the room, making it difficult to open the doors. After the door was broken down, SCP-8648 took the form of a thin layer of ice on the floor, causing 3 (three) MTF agents to slip. Once on the floor, SCP-8648 became a liquid and quickly covered the agents. It then absorbed the water within their bodies, killing them. One agent threw a pouch of a water absorbing powder (composed of microscopic sand and glass fibers) into SCP-8648. However, instead of absorbing SCP-8648, it formed a coating of the powder around the outside of SCP-8648’s puddle. It then instantaneously changed form to superheated steam, propelling the powder at a high speed in all directions. This killed 2 (two) more MTF agents. SCP-8648 then once again took the form of a humanoid made of ice and began to attack. Agents opened fire up wherever a bullet would hit turned to water, allowing the bullet to pass through. It was only able to be contained after a containment specialist poured several gallons of pure liquid nitrogen onto SCP-8648. SCP-8648 was returned to its containment chamber where the automated liquid nitrogen system kept it frozen until additions could be made to prevent these breaches. Following this incident, a system was installed to drop liquid nitrogen in the area around the chamber, and the chamber was outfitted with a system to create vibrations, therefore inducing crystallization. Light fixtures are also to be sealed. It is estimated that SCP-8648 1-2% from the water absorbed from the agents.
Incident log 8648-2: On [REDACTED], SCP-8648 breached containment, and killed 12 members of staff. The cause of this breach was the failure of the temperature control module as well as the back-up liquid nitrogen system. Later inspection showed this was due to the properties of the metals included in their construction, which shrunk by several nanometers when in low temperature. The misalignment caused by this subtle change in so many pierced placed stress on reinforced bolts used to hold these components together. After approximately 18 months of these conditions, several bolts failed in a matter of hours. This resulted in the automatic shutdown of these components, and thus the failure of the temperature control and backup systems. Once SCP-8648 was able to move, it turned into a gas form and attempted to break through the chamber. When this failed, it superheated itself to a very hot steam, and applied pressure to the bolts holding the light fixtures. This rapid change in temperature caused the metal to quickly expand and cracks to form. SCP-8648 then used these to escape through. The on sight researcher incharge of operating the liquid nitrogen sprinkler system attempted to activate it, however SCP-8648 killed them before it could start. Mobile Task Force [REDACTED] broke down the door and stormed the room surrounding the containment chamber, but at first weren’t able to locate SCP-8648. This turned out to be because SCP-8648 had formed into a very fine mist and entered one of the agent’s lungs. There, it turned into a liquid, causing the agent to ‘drown’. In a horrid display of its power, SCP-8648 then violently expanded within his body, effectively causing the agent to explode, coating the surroundings with his blood. Fortunately, one agent was able to reach the sprinkler controls during the commotion and activated it. However, activation of this system also automatically locked the doors, trapping the rest of MTA [REDACTED] inside. By the time backup arrived, all members of the task force had been killed by the liquid nitrogen. Following the incident, SCP-8648’s containment chamber was entirely rebuilt using materials unaffected by the extreme temperatures. A special equipped task force was also created to handle SCP-8648, and 5 of these agents were to be positioned outside of the containment chamber.
Incident log 8648-3: On [REDACTED], during an experiment evolving SCP-8648, it breached containment and killed 8 (eight) personnel, including 6 (six) D-class and 2 (two) researchers. The purpose of this experiment was to gauge the effect electrical current has on SCP-8648. To do this, 6 D-class personnel were to bring it to a secure testing chamber and clamp two clips to the ice structure. They then exited the chamber and ran different amounts of electricity through SCP-8648. During this time SCP-8648 transformed into a humanoid made of water and attempted to escape, but a specially designed fan system kept it trapped in an area of low pressure. When 15,000 volts was run through SCP-8648 it appeared to collapse into a puddle of water on the floor. 2 D-class personnel were sent in and after some examination there was no movement from the puddle. One researcher was sent in to confirm if the electricity had neutralized SCP-8648, but when they stepped closer to the puddle a shard ice spike impaled them. It had seemingly set a trap and waited for the right opportunity to attack. The two D-class personnel attempted to flee but were quickly surrounded by spikes of ice sprouting from the puddle. It is unknown what SCP-8648 did to them while they were trapped behind the ice, but when their bodies were retrieved nothing but their fully intact blood vessels remained. SCP-8648 then transformed into steam and escaped through the unsealed bolts connecting the 2-way mirror. On the other side, it swiftly killed and drained the remaining 4 D-classes and the other researcher. The specially outfitted task force, though not fully complete, was quickly on the scene. SCP-8648 attempted to infiltrate one agent’s lungs but was unsuccessful due to specially made gas masks. Agents attempted to freeze it with liquid nitrogen guns but it simply took the form of a cloud and floated too high for their weapons to be effective. Soon after this cloud started to rain boiling water on the task force, severely injuring 6 (six) of them but not killing anyone. Soon after a hose was attached to a liquid nitrogen container and SCP-8648 was sprayed down by Agent Richard [REDACTED]. No further experiments involving SCP-8648 will be authorized until a specially constructed test chamber can be created.
