📄 SCP-8832 – “Grey Shadow”
Item #: SCP-8832
Object Class: Safe
________________________________________
Special Containment Procedures:
SCP-8832 is to be contained in a standardized single-occupant containment chamber (4 m × 4 m) at Site-██. The chamber walls must be lined with a sheath composed of tantalum and titanium. The object is to be placed on an elevated pedestal. At least one surveillance unit equipped with infrared and night vision capabilities must remain focused on the object at all times. Observation personnel are to be rotated every 12 hours.
No personnel may remain in the same room as SCP-8832 for more than 3 continuous hours.
If a non-test subject is exposed to SCP-8832 for longer than the permitted duration, they are to be immediately isolated and examined for cognitive deviations and identity distortion. Should these symptoms manifest, termination is to be executed without delay. Test subjects who are repeatedly or continuously exposed to SCP-8832 are likewise to be regularly screened for cognitive deviations and identity distortion.

Description:
SCP-8832 is a solid metal cube (10 cm × 10 cm × 10 cm), composed of standard cast iron. Material analysis has shown no abnormal properties.
SCP-8832 casts a grey shadow that permanently points exactly due north. This shadow is constant and independent of environmental lighting, light source, and orientation. The shadow is visible to the naked eye, but appears unnaturally dull and pale. Testing has demonstrated that the shadow remains unchanged regardless of lighting or positional shifts, though under certain light conditions it may no longer be visible (see: Test Log Excerpt). The shadow reacts normally to any physical repositioning of the cube itself.
SCP-8832 emits an undetectable, anomalous field which, in all documented cases, results in long-term exposure leading to permanent personality alteration. It remains undetermined whether the cube or its shadow is responsible for this effect. Dr. Sherman has hypothesized that tantalum and titanium may suppress SCP-8832’s effects, a theory that has been supported by experimental results (see: Test Log Excerpt, Test 02.2-10).
SCP-8832 was first discovered on 12/09/20██ by a Foundation employee following internet reports of a shadow anomaly in an abandoned hotel. MTF Eta-10 was deployed to investigate and contain the anomaly. SCP-8832 was found on a rusted pedestal surrounded by corpses, which had apparently died of starvation. Commander █████ reported via radio: “They almost seemed to worship this cube.” Several days after relocation to Site-██, multiple personnel had to be terminated following attempts to gain unauthorized access to SCP-8832’s containment chamber.

🧪 Test Log Excerpt:
• Test 01.1: Lighting within SCP-8832’s containment chamber was completely deactivated.
Result: Night vision observation confirmed that the shadow remained unchanged.
• Test 03.1: SCP-8832 was sealed inside a glass container. A control cube of identical size and material was placed in a second identical glass container.
Result: SCP-8832’s shadow behaved identically to that of the control object.
• Test 04.2: The object was removed from its pedestal for several days.
Result: No changes were detected at the prior location. Only the anomalous field relocated with SCP-8832.
• Test 05.1–6: SCP-8832 was photographed with multiple digital and analog cameras.
Result: The grey shadow was visible in the photos as expected. SCP-8832’s anomalous effects were not transmitted via the images.
• Test 02.1: D-Class personnel were exposed to SCP-8832 for extended periods and removed only briefly for interviews.
Result: See interview transcripts.
• Test 02.2–10: SCP-8832 was enclosed in containers made from various materials. Effects were tested using additional D-Class personnel.
Result: Tantalum and titanium suppressed SCP-8832’s effects. Other materials such as lead, magnesium, tungsten, molybdenum, glass, graphite, and aluminum oxide (see: Incident Log Test 02.2-8) showed insufficient or no suppressive properties.

📄 Interview Log – Test 02.1:
Interview 1
Interviewer: Dr. Sherman
Date: Day 1 of exposure – D-████
Transcript:
Dr. Sherman: Hello D-████. My name is Dr. Sherman and I’ll be conducting daily interviews with you. How are you feeling? Can you describe what you saw in the room?
D-████: Honestly, it was kind of boring. I don’t really get what the big deal is. It’s just a small room with a pedestal and a metal cube. Nothing interesting. Although, the shadow was kind of weird. I can’t really explain why.
Dr. Sherman: How did you feel while observing the object?
D-████: I didn’t feel anything. There’s nothing in there. Listen... I’ve been locked in a room with SCP-173 before. Not that I want to do that again, but at least that thing did something. Why am I even in that room?
Dr. Sherman: I’m not authorized to provide that information.
After the interview, D-████ was returned to SCP-8832’s containment chamber.

Interview 2
Date: Day 2 of exposure – D-████
Transcript:
Dr. Sherman: How are you feeling today? Any new observations?
D-████: Not really. Everything’s just like yesterday. Well, actually… I think I figured out what bothered me about the shadow. It’s grey. Shadows are supposed to be black, but this one’s grey. That’s… kind of interesting. It’s not going to kill me on the seventh day or something, right?
Dr. Sherman: [Audible sigh] I’m not permitted to disclose information regarding SCP-8832’s effects.
D-████: Yeah, yeah, I get it. Honestly, I think it’s kind of interesting. I… [ACCESS DENIED] …and now I’m just here staring at a metal cube all day.
Dr. Sherman: Welcome to the SCP Foundation. But has anything in the room changed for you?
D-████: No. The room’s the same. So is the cube. But I don’t like it. The grey shadow makes me nervous.
D-████ begins displaying signs of discomfort and unease in relation to SCP-8832.
Dr. Sherman: Understood. Remember to report anything that seems unusual.

Interview 3
Date: Day 3 of exposure – D-████
Transcript:
Dr. Sherman: You seem unusually cheerful today, D-████. Is there a reason?
D-████: Of course. I understand it now. The shadow is constant. It’s strange, but it never changes. I didn’t have much to do, so I did a little experimenting with what I had. I blocked light, I moved it, I even placed something on top of the cube. The shadow never changed. I find the grey shadow… profoundly fascinating.
Dr. Sherman: [Dr. Sherman records a note in his notebook.] I must ask you not to move SCP-8832 or place items on it in the future. There is a risk of damaging the object.
D-████: It’s a metal block—it’s not going to break that easily. But if you say so… I could talk to them about the Cube for hours. I mean, it's like E=MC². Untouchable. Perfect. I sincerely hope I can assist them with these interviews.
Dr. Sherman: Of course. Your information is very important to us.

Interview 4
Date: Day 4 following the exposure of D-████
Transcript:
Dr. Sherman: How are you feeling today, D-████?
D-████: I don’t know. D-████? That doesn’t sound right. None of this feels right. It all feels so forced. After all, we’re researching something truly fascinating together. SCP-8832. Rarely have I seen something so magnificent and mysterious. And I’ve worked here for ██ years.
Dr. Sherman: You, working?
D-████: Yes, I know. In the conventional sense, it wouldn’t be considered work, but I regard it as such. After all, it’s all for the greater good. You know — Secure, Contain, Protect. The Foundation’s guiding principle.
Dr. Sherman: [Writes something down in her notebook with interest.] That is certainly one way to look at it.
D-████: Yes, I feel as if we are making great strides. I can sense we are close to uncovering its secret.
Dr. Sherman: Certainly...

Interview 5
Date: Day 5 following the exposure of D-████
Transcript:
Dr. Sherman: How are you feeling today, D-████?
D-████: I don’t know who you’re referring to.
Dr. Sherman: What do you mean?
D-████: I am Dr. H. We’ve been working together for five days now and you still don’t know my name? That’s rather unprofessional, wouldn’t you agree? We are both professors, after all.
Dr. Sherman: You? A professor? I highly doubt that. You are D-Class personnel, here to test the effects of SCP-8832.
D-████: Are you feeling well? You clearly have a memory lapse. Perhaps you should consult a psychologist — I believe Dr. ████ would be perfectly suited for that. Otherwise, I will have to remove you from the research project. This cannot continue, Dr. Sherman.
Dr. Sherman: How do you know about Dr. ████? That information is not accessible to you.
D-████: [Strikes the table aggressively with the palm of his hand.] Listen to me! I am the lead researcher here. You have no authority over me. You have no idea what level of clearance I possess. If you’re just going to continue wasting valuable time, I’ll be leaving now. I still have several experiments to conduct!
Dr. Sherman decided to terminate the interview. D-████ was escorted back to SCP-8832’s containment chamber by security personnel. He did not resist.

Interview 6
Date: Day 6 following the exposure of D-████
Transcript:
Dr. Sherman was instructed to address D-████ as Dr. H in order to ensure continued communication.
Dr. Sherman: Good day, Mr. H. Have you discovered any new information about SCP-8832?
Dr. H: Good day, Dr. Sherman. No, unfortunately not. Please forgive my outburst yesterday. I was not quite myself.
Dr. Sherman: No problem, but let’s stay focused on SCP-8832. Would you say that its presence has changed you in any way?
Dr. H: No, of course not. There’s nothing extraordinary about it. Except for the gray shadow, of course. So far, I have not been able to affect it in any way. I need to speak with the senior researchers. Perhaps I’ll be granted permission to move SCP-8832, or even detach a small piece of it for experimentation.
Dr. Sherman begins to nervously bounce her leg.
Dr. Sherman: I would advise against that. What if it triggers an unexpected effect? Perhaps the gray shadow will kill you, or something similar. We don’t know what SCP-8832 is capable of.
Dr. H: You’re right, Sherman. Nevertheless, I will request the necessary authorization when the opportunity arises. That way, I can intensify my research. You should work in the chamber with me. I’m sure we’d make greater progress together.
Dr. Sherman: No, thank you. I wouldn’t want to interrupt your research. Please keep me informed should you discover anything new.
Dr. H: Of course. Shall we meet again tomorrow at the same time?
Dr. Sherman: [Nods silently and releases him back into the chamber.]

📌 Appendix:
Following the interview, D-████ was classified as an SCP-8832-1 instance and was henceforth only referred to as Dr. H. However, Dr. Sherman reported that the subject had already become an SCP-8832-1 instance by Day 5. SCP-8832-1 attempted to destroy SCP-8832 after two additional days and was subsequently transferred to a separate cell. Upon questioning by Dr. Sherman, the subject admitted this was done for research purposes. SCP-8832-1 was used for further testing (see: Supplemental Testing Log 02.1), although he began displaying hostile behavior toward Dr. Sherman after learning he was no longer permitted to experiment with SCP-8832. His behavior remained unchanged even after several days without contact with SCP-8832.

🧠 Supplemental Testing Log 02.1:
• Test 02.1.1: SCP-8832-1 was placed in a white room devoid of any stimuli.
Result: After 3 hours, the subject began writing notes about SCP-8832 on the walls, using his own blood obtained by biting his finger until it bled. This continued until he was returned to his original cell several hours later.
• Test 02.1.2: SCP-8832-1 was shown a photograph of SCP-8832.
Result: After 2 minutes, the subject tore it apart and screamed that he required the original for his research.
• Test 02.1.3: SCP-8832-1 was administered Class B amnestics.
Result: While memory loss was induced, the subject insisted on continuing to be referred to as Dr. H and demanded to resume research on SCP-8832.

📌 Appendix: Evaluation by Dr. Sherman
"These tests have demonstrated that the effects of SCP-8832 can be suppressed by the use of tantalum and titanium. Whether these materials provide complete shielding or merely significantly weaken the anomaly’s influence remains to be determined in future tests. The curiosity exhibited by the subject in Test 02.10 is attributed to individual personality traits rather than an effect of SCP-8832, as no increased interest was noted among personnel following the installation of the new containment unit. Additionally, based on the variety of resulting SCP-8832-1 instances, I conclude that the personalities formed are not iterations of a single identity, such as in the case of Dr. Bright. Rather, I hypothesize that each newly emerged personality is still based upon, and a modified version of, the subject’s original personality."
Excerpts of note:
If a non-test subject is exposed to SCP-8832 for longer than the permitted duration, they are to be immediately isolated and examined for cognitive deviations and identity distortion. Should these symptoms manifest, termination is to be executed without delay. Test subjects who are repeatedly or continuously exposed to SCP-8832 are likewise to be regularly screened for cognitive deviations and identity distortion.
