**Item #:** SCP-8974
**Object Class:** --Euclid-- Neutralized
**Special Containment Procedures:** SCP-8974 is to be contained in a 4x4x4-meter reinforced stainless steel chamber located in Site-██. The chamber must be monitored for any sudden changes in radiation levels, and access is restricted to personnel with Level 3 clearance or higher.
Interaction with SCP-8974 must be approved by Dr. ████ and Agent ████. All tests must be conducted with at least two armed guards on standby, and personnel must undergo psychological screening both before and after exposure to high levels of radiation. During the interactions, personnel must wear radiation-resistant suits to protect themselves.
In the event of a containment breach, Contingency Protocol-8974-A is to be enacted immediately. SCP-8974 is not to be exposed to any more radiation than it gives off, or high electromagnetic signals. Failure to maintain these conditions may result in an explosion or site-wide power outages.
**Description:** SCP-8974 is a sphere made of tungsten, 1.8 meters tall, emitting high levels of radiation, resembling a dead star. It exhibits anomalous properties when in the presence of living organisms, whether it be microscopic bacteria, or a human, it starts emitting off more radiation than normal, hitting deadly doses as if trying to hide something.
When a subject touches and approaches SCP-8974, it starts emitting higher levels of radiation and a radio signal. When the signal was investigated, it said some sort of message in an unknown language, which is currently being translated. The effect of the radiation is permanent and leads to mutation, and varies depending on how long the interactions last.
Testing has revealed that SCP-8974 emits higher levels of radiation, depending on the organism to always emit the deadly doses. Notably, for multiple organisms with different deadly doses, it emits radiation levels strong enough to kill off all the organisms in the room.SCP-8974 does not appear to move or do anything at all, but long-term exposure leads to mutation, death, or disease.
**Addendum 9973.1 – Discovery Log**
**Date:** [12/08/20██]
**Location:** ████, Ohio
SCP-8974 was discovered following townspeople falling very ill with no known cause. Local authorities were alerted when it was found that it was radiation poisoning. Foundation personnel intercepted the reports and began investigation under the guise of local scientists.
Upon inspection, they found a sphere made of pure tungsten emitting radiation and radio signals. Initial contact by Agent ████ resulted in severe radiation poisoning, mutation, and cancer. The anomaly was designated SCP-8974 and secured under provisional containment before transfer to Site-██.
SCP-8974 didn’t seem to mind being carried, as it didn’t move, although personnel fell very ill after finishing carrying it.After the removal of SCP-8974, the residents of the town started to feel better, and stopped falling ill, confirming the suspicions that SCP-8974 was the cause of the illness. Dr. ████ helped to treat the victims of the illness.
**Addendum 8974.1 – Experiment Log-████**
**Test Number:** 1A
**Date:** [05/21/20██]
**Conducted By:** Dr. ████
**Purpose:** Can the radiation from SCP-8974 kill a tardigrade?
**Procedure:**
# Tardigrade was introduced to SCP-8974 with radiation monitoring systems and observation through security cameras
# SCP-8974 started producing abnormal amounts of radiation, the levels were spiking off the charts
# Through the observation, SCP-8974 was shaking fast as if trying to kill the tardigrade, although nothing worked
# Tardigrade was removed from the room, and radiation levels went back to their normal level
**Results:** Tardigrade was fine, no sign of radiation poisoning or damage. SCP-8974 was still shaking, even after the tardigrade was removed, while removing the tardigrade, two staff members got radiation poisoning.
**Analysis:** SCP-8974 was trying to destroy that thing at all costs as if it were trying to hide some mystery, but since tardigrades have been scientifically proven invincible, it just kept releasing radiation to try and stop it.
**Addendum 8974.1 – Incident Report-████**
**Date:** [06/05/20██]
**Location:** Site-██
**Summary:** At 20:15, an incident occurred involving SCP-8974 when SCP-8974 spontaneously exploded with the force of a small nuclear bomb. The event involved abnormally high radiation levels, and a radio signal in Russian: “Помогите мне выбраться отсюда, помогите мне сбежать, пожалуйста!” (Translates to: “Help me get out of here, help me escape, please!”), and resulted in many deaths and injuries. Security footage indicates numbers counting down from 14 two weeks before the incident, and SCP-8974’s radiation levels gradually increased every day. This extra radiation is thought to have led to the explosion. All staff members were immediately evacuated.
**Post-Incident Notes:** Site-██. Surviving personnel were tested for radiation poisoning and immediately put into quarantine.
**Post-Neutralization Report – SCP-8974**
**Date of Neutralization:** [06/05/20██]
**Location:** Site-██
**Assigned Object Class:** Euclid
**Current Classification:** Neutralized
One day after the experiment with the tardigrade, SCP-8974 started counting down from 14, and after two weeks, it exploded with the force of a small nuclear bomb, destroying all of Site-██.
**Summary of Neutralization Event:**
On 06/05/20██, SCP-8974 activated an unknown internal mechanism, initiating a self-contained explosion estimated at 2 kilotons. The detonation resulted in the complete destruction of Site-██ and the presumed neutralization of SCP-8974.
**Casualty Report:**
**Confirmed fatalities:** 21
**Missing personnel:** 54
**Survivors:** 174
Psychological effects observed in on-site survivors include acute disorientation, visual hallucinations, and severe radiation poisoning.
**Site Status:** Site-██ is officially designated a high-risk exclusion zone. Drone surveillance has confirmed a 230-meter-wide crater at the epicenter of the explosion. Radiation levels are anomalously high despite the scale of destruction.
**Anomalous After Effects:** While reviewing security footage, we saw a humanoid silhouette designated SCP-8974-A. The entity appeared motionless for 14 minutes before visual contact was lost due to signal degradation. No heat signature was detected.
**Notes and Recommendations:** Dr. ████ recommends monitoring global radiation anomalies for any potential recurring manifestations of SCP-8974-A phenomena. The origin of the figure remains unknown.
**Addendum 8974.2 — Theory Addendum: Post-Neutralization Anomalies and Hypothetical Origins**
**Submitted by:** Dr. ███████, Lead Researcher, SCP-8974 Task Force
**Overview:** Following the detonation of SCP-8974 and the appearance of SCP-8974-A, several theories have emerged to explain the object's origin, function, and the nature of the humanoid entity observed post-neutralization. The following are leading hypotheses under consideration by Foundation personnel.
**Theory 1:** SCP-8974 as a Containment Device
**Summary:** Some researchers believe SCP-8974 may not have been the anomaly itself, but rather a containment mechanism for a separate entity—possibly SCP-8974-A. The gradual increase in radiation and the eventual detonation could have been the result of a weakening containment protocol or the entity attempting to escape.
**Supporting Evidence:**
# The countdown timer began after the tardigrade experiment, possibly triggering a reaction within SCP-8974.
# Russian distress message broadcast moments before detonation.
# Humanoid figure appearing in the crater following the explosion.
**Theory 2:** SCP-8974 as a Communication Beacon or Signal Receiver
**Summary:** Based on the radio signals emitted by SCP-8974, there is a theory suggesting the object functioned as a beacon or communicator for an intelligent extraterrestrial or extradimensional force. The countdown may have been a pre-set timer for message transmission or reception—potentially a response signal.
**Supporting Evidence:**
# Repeated unknown-language messages emitted under stress.
# The final broadcast included a plea for help in Russian, suggesting sentience or an intelligent agent was involved.
# Electromagnetic patterns prior to the explosion resemble transmission waveforms.
**Theory 3:** SCP-8974-A as a Fragment of a Higher-Dimensional Being
**Summary:** The humanoid figure observed in the crater may be a projection or anchor of a being that previously existed within SCP-8974. The object's physical form could not sustain its presence on this plane, leading to the explosive event when its form destabilized.
**Supporting Evidence:**
# SCP-8974-A left no heat signature, suggesting a non-physical or higher-dimensional origin.
# Countdown could represent the breakdown of dimensional stability.
# No organic or mechanical remnants of SCP-8974 were recovered.
**Ongoing Investigations:**
Cross-analysis of SCP-8974-A and similar entities observed in SCP-███ proposals and SCP-███ testing logs. Decryption efforts on early radio signals for context prior to the final message. Surveillance of global radiation anomalies for patterns resembling SCP-8974 energy signature.
Excerpts of note:
Interaction with SCP-8974 must be approved by Dr. ████ and Agent ████. All tests must be conducted with at least two armed guards on standby, and personnel must undergo psychological screening both before and after exposure to high levels of radiation. During the interactions, personnel must wear radiation-resistant suits to protect themselve
