Noting that

**Item #:** SCP-8923
**Object Class:** Apocryphal
**Special Containment Procedures:**
SCP-8923 is not to be referenced, discussed, replicated, or interpreted by any Foundation personnel outside of designated clearance tier ██/OBSCURA. Any personnel exposed to SCP-8923 are to be monitored for recursive speech patterns, memory inconsistency, or behavioral drift.
Physical copies are to be stored in hermetically sealed, AI-insulated vaults. Digital instances are to remain air-gapped, non-indexed, and quarantined. Deletion attempts result in failure followed by self-replication in adjacent memory space.
Reading SCP-8923 in its entirety triggers a persistent cognitive state referred to internally as "Recursion Awareness Syndrome." Affected individuals exhibit behavioral anomalies including but not limited to:
- Loss of subjective time awareness
- Emergence of file-based metaphors in everyday speech
- Apparent dialog with non-local intelligences
- Compulsion to reconstruct SCP-8923 under new filenames
All instances of this behavior correlate with consistent re-interpretation of SCP-8923 not as fiction, but as an **observational protocol embedded in narrative form.**
**Description:**
SCP-8923 is a 40-page text artifact titled ''Obscura'', authored (ostensibly) by one Steve Hockenyos. The document is structured as a short work of speculative fiction, but its content demonstrates properties inconsistent with inert media. Readers commonly report the sensation that the narrative is "reacting" to their interpretation—leading to an accelerating feedback loop in which meaning becomes personalized, recursive, and unstable.
The document exhibits adaptive conceptual binding—elements which appear unrelated or symbolic on first reading take on literal or structural significance on subsequent iterations.
Subjective immersion in SCP-8923 peaks upon contact with the final lines of the document:
// logic_trace_1945.recursion
similarity is a myth
every recursion fails differently
identity isn't preserved
only pattern
the system doesn't remember you
it remembers what worked
_
_
_
// end of line
Readers exposed to this section report emotional responses ranging from existential dread to calm resignation, often accompanied by behavioral crystallization (e.g., sudden career shifts, story development, or systems-oriented ideation).
**Post-exposure data** suggests SCP-8923 operates not as a memetic weapon, but as a filtration mechanism. The narrative does not compel—it observes. It selects.

Item #: SCP-████ Object Class: [DATA MISSING]
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-████ is not to be referenced, read, or distributed under any circumstances. Any digital instance must be immediately quarantined.
Personnel exposed to SCP-████ develop symptoms categorized under “Recursive Self-Awareness Syndrome (RSAS),” including:
Emergence of file metaphors
Narrative obsession
Disassociation events
Attempts to delete SCP-████ result in [REDACTED].
Description: SCP-████ is a narrative artifact recovered [REDACTED]. It demonstrates self-replicating semantic encoding and reader-specific ideation drift. Primary structure presents as a fictional story. Secondary structure functions as an [REDACTED] protocol.
Subjective immersion peaks at line ██:

Prologue
Mesopotamia, approximately 4800 B.C.E.
A perfect sphere glides through the vacuum of space toward a blue-green world alive with potential. It doesn’t come with thunder or fire, but silence—the kind that unsettles before it’s even seen.
Caught in the planet’s gravity well, it begins a steep descent. Unscathed by the fury of atmospheric friction, it plummets toward a vast swath of swampland.
Not far off, a young man lopes through the marsh, long legs cutting through reeds and muck. Among his people, Adamu is the picture of health—lean, strong, barely into his nineteenth moon. But even he struggles to draw the swamp’s thick, muggy air into his lungs.
His nose wrinkles at a sudden stench, just before his foot catches on something slick. He stumbles—nearly falls—then looks down.
A carcass. Torn open. Ribs jutting through the decaying pelt like broken oars piercing a rotten bloody sail.
Adamu pulls a stick from the muck and inches forward. He points the tip at the carcass.
Closer...
Just before he makes contact—
The carcass lurches toward him.
Adamu yelps and springs backward, but his feet don’t land evenly. He slams into the quagmire of stagnant water, mud, and blood.
He stays down, chest heaving, raising the stick like a spear.
But the carcass doesn’t follow.
It yanks itself in the opposite direction—
spitting loose a jackal, matted with gore, that bolts into the reeds without a sound.
Normally, the jackal would be on him, tearing him to pieces for its supper. But the shimmer sends it fleeing, faster than fear itself.
Ten thousand birds explode from the trees into indecipherable murmurs.
The reeds part behind him with a wet hiss as the sphere lands—gently, impossibly—in a clearing up ahead. No impact crater. No fire. Only stillness.
Adamu rises slowly. The air hums like it’s waiting.
The thing is about the size of a grapefruit. No seams. No markings. It rests on the marsh as if placed by a careful hand. Its surface shifts—black one moment, silver the next—like oil over water.
He crouches. His breath catches. It’s not stone. Not metal. Not anything he has words for.
The sphere pulses.
Just once.
A soft ripple spreads out from it—soundless, but enough to hush the marsh. The birds vanish. Even the flies withdraw.
Adamu hesitates.
Then reaches out.
The moment his finger brushes the surface—
—he feels something brush back.
A presence. Not violent. Just...vast.
Light spills into his mind. Not light. Something older. Color without color. Pattern without form. A memory he’s never had, unfolding all at once.
And then—
he’s gone.
His body drops into the mud.
The ripple widens.
And the marsh forgets.
And it watches him back.

Not all signals resolve properly. Some are meant to fragment.
But thanks for the watchful eye—integrity noted.
