+++ **Item Number:** SCP-8604
+++ **Object Class:** Keter
+++ **Special Containment Procedures:**
SCP-8604 is to be allowed to freely roam through the common areas of Site-58.
Under no circumstances are personnel to disregard or delay SCP-8604's demands for sustenance or recreational activities. Compliance is mandatory, as failure to meet these requirements may result in the entity manifesting within personnel quarters at approximately 04.00 in the morning, displaying heightened agitation and vocalizing in a manner that demands immediate attention.
In the event of a containment breach, SCP-8604 is known to seek out elevated or otherwise restricted areas, making recovery efforts exceedingly difficult. Recontainment procedures dictate the deployment of Class-B distraction devices - specifically, a concentrated red-spectrum emission device. This device has been shown to effectively redirect SCP-8604's focus, allowing personnel to guide the entity back to its designated containment area without direct confrontation.
+++ **Description:**
SCP-8604 is a small, highly agile entity characterised by its swift movements and predatory instincts. Despite its appearance, SCP-8604 exhibits a degree of unpredictability and cunning that poses a significant challenge to containment. The entity is capable of rapid, calculated strikes, often targeting objects or individuals within its environment without warning.
SCP-8604 displays acute sensory awareness, reacting with remarkable speed to changes in its surroundings. It has been observed to alternate between periods of intense activity - marked by rapid, relentless pursuit of perceived prey - and extended durations of inactivity, during which it maintains a constant state of alertness and rapid responsiveness.
SCP-8604 frequently behaves as though it expects submission from staff, often observing personnel with behaviors indicative of hierarchical dominance typically associated with deific entities. Multiple staff members have begun displaying behaviors that suggest excessive reverence, including unsolicited offerings and inexplicable acts of deference in SCP-8604's presence. These behaviors, coupled with SCP-8604's conduct, indicate potential memetic or cognitohazardous influence, suggesting the entity may compel staff to view it as a figure of worship.
+++ **Addendum 8406-8: Experiment Log**
--**Procedure:**--
--A variety of inorganic materials, including steel, glass, and ceramic, were placed within the anomalous field of SCP-8406 for a duration of 24 hours.--
--**Results:**--
--Steel: No observable changes in composition or structure.--
--Glass: Minor surface etching noted, possibly due to localized fluctuations in SCP-8406's field.--
--Ceramic: Significant increase in brittleness, leading to partial fracturing upon retrieval.--

//The rhythmic thumping of helicopter blades fills the cabin. Commander Greaves sits forward, eyes narrowed, as Lieutenant Avery is focused on his tablet.//
**Lieutenant Avery**: Sir, we have received the details from O5. Seems like a Keter anomaly just appeared in the site's containment, and staff was reported worshipping it.
**Commander Greaves**: A Keter in a Safe site, and possible cultist activity? This could get ugly. Looks like we’re the perfect fit for the job.
**Lieutenant Avery**: Site personnel didn’t report anything, sir. O5 only got word through an automated alert system. Definitely smells like cultist behavior - laying low and playing dumb.
**Commander Greaves**: So we’re looking at gross negligence at best, or treason at worst. Either way, arrests are happening.
**Lieutenant Avery**: There's more sir. They want the site secured first, but they’ve made it clear that understanding the extent of this mess is just as important. We’ll have to do some investigating once we’ve stabilised the situation.
**Commander Greaves**: //(Sighs)// Wonderful. So after we’ve done our job, we're also supposed to play detective. Just what I signed up for.
**Lieutenant Avery**: Doesn’t feel like our kind of mission. Could’ve sent an investigative team instead.
**Commander Greaves**: Yeah, but they need an elite force to secure the site. A cultist contamination is no joke. And while we are at it, I guess they also want us to handle the boring part too.
//A few seconds of silence.//
**Lieutenant Avery**: We are approaching Site-58. ETA 1 minute.
**Commander Greaves**: Alright team, this is going to be a bit different from our usual run-and-gun. Let's make it quick and clean. We go in, lock the site down, and figure out what the hell is going on. Questions first, shots later if we have to.
//The cabin jolts slightly as they begin their descent.//

//The door to Site Director Emilia Mercer’s office slams open as Commander Greaves storms in with two Alpha-1 agents.//
**Commander Greaves:** Director Mercer, you’re under arrest.
**Director Mercer:** What’s going on? I... I don’t understand!
//Greaves steps closer.//
**Commander Greaves:** Yeah, I'm sure you don't. How about you start by explaining the weird additions to your SCP files?
**Director Mercer:** Additions? Oh… that’s it? So, the almighty Red Right Hand storms in to arrest me over a few... file errors?
**Commander Greaves:** Nothing important at all, right? Now tell me, why are your systems logging hundreds of unauthorised door access attempts?
//Mercer’s face goes blank. She stares at him, the color slowly draining from her cheeks.//
**Director Mercer:** Unauthorised access...? No, no, there must be some mistake. Maybe it was just a system glitc-
//Greaves interrupts her with a dismissive wave.//
**Commander Greaves:** You had no idea, did you? It’s not like monitoring security breaches is part of your job or anything.
//There is a moment of silence.//
**Commander Greaves:** And that’s not even the worst of it. You’ve got a Keter-class file uploaded from your site. Care to explain that?
**Director Mercer:** Keter? No… that can’t be right. We… we don’t even handle Keters, this is a Safe site. Are you sure that's not a mix-up? We haven't had any issues here since... well, ever.
//Greaves leans forward.//
**Commander Greaves:** A mix-up. Yeah, sure. Your personnel are giving offerings, acting like they’re worshipping that thing. Does that sound normal to you? Or was that also a mix-up?
//Mercer’s hands drop to her sides.//
**Director Mercer:** //(Barely audible)// No… I didn’t… I haven’t seen anything like that.
//Greaves straightens up.//
**Commander Greaves:** Of course you haven’t. After all, this site is immune just because it's marked Safe, right? Nothing could possibly happen here.
//He stares at her for a moment, watching as she struggles to form a response, then shakes his head.//
**Commander Greaves:** You incompetent bitch. Even if the Scarlet King himself was operating right under your nose, you’d still have no clue. Hell, you’d probably write it off as a file error and go about your day.
//Mercer stares at him, utterly speechless. Greaves takes a step back.//
**Commander Greaves:** Or maybe you do know. Maybe you’re hiding it. I’m giving you the benefit of the doubt, Director, but if I find out you're playing me... you’ll be leaving this site in a body bag, not a pair of cuffs.
//He stares at her for a long, deliberate moment. Mercer remains frozen, as Greaves turns and exits without another word.//

//Commander Greaves's gaze is fixed on Researcher Shaw, unblinking, his fingers tapping a steady rhythm on the table’s edge. Shaw's hands twitch against his lap, eyes darting anywhere but Greaves’s face.//
**Commander Greaves:** Where is SCP-8604? You were the one who uploaded its file to the database. Talk.
**Researcher Shaw:** //(Words stumble out)// I - I don’t know, sir. I don’t even remember uploading that file.
//Commander Greaves's eyes narrow.//
**Commander Greaves:** //(Leaning in, voice hard)// You expect me to believe that? A Keter-class file just appears, and you forgot? Don’t play dumb. Start telling me what you do remember. What files did you touch today? Every detail.
**Researcher Shaw:** //(His eyes widen, panic seeping into his voice)// I... I wrote the experiment results on SCP-8406. That's all. I didn't update any other file, I didn't even read any other file!
//There is a moment of silence, as Greaves is focused on his tablet.//
**Commander Greaves:** Do you think I’m an idiot? SCP-8406. Last update time? Two weeks ago. You’re lying.
//Shaw’s hands start trembling visibly. His voice falters, and tears begin to well up as he grips the edge of the table.//
**Researcher Shaw:** No, no - I swear I didn’t touch anything else! I don’t know how that file got there!
**Commander Greaves:** You’d better start telling the truth, Shaw. This ends badly for you otherwise.
//Shaw starts to cry, his speech becoming unintelligible.//
**Researcher Shaw:** I... I DIDN'T DO ANYTHING!
//Commander Greaves remains unmoved. His expression doesn’t shift as he slowly turns, walks toward the door, and opens it. His voice is flat.//
**Commander Greaves:** Detain all personnel. Initiate a full-scale search of the site.

//Site-58 personnel are confined in the communal dining area. MTF Alpha-1 guards the exits, their expressions unreadable. Commander Greaves paces in front of the gathered staff, his frustration evident.//
**Commander Greaves:** //(Yelling, voice echoing off the walls)// We searched the whole site. Nothing! Not a damn thing! What are you people hiding?
//The site personnel exchange confused and worried glances.//
**Director Mercer:** //(Steps forward, still handcuffed)// Commander, we've followed every protocol. There’s nothing here.
**Commander Greaves:** Don't tell me how to do my job! You are the director of this site, this was your responsibility! You are as guilty as all of them!
//His hand moves to his side, drawing his pistol in a slow, deliberate motion.//
**Commander Greaves:** //(Snapping, voice harsh)// Why the hell did we get an alert about a Keter SCP? Someone better start talking, or I swear to god this will end very badly for all of you!
//There is a moment of silence, as a small, furry creature is seen darting around the legs of the personnel. It's Fluffy, the site’s cat, oblivious to the chaos, playfully batting at a loose thread on someone's lab coat.//
//Suddenly, Fluffy darts toward the rear door of the room. She leaps toward the biometric scanner mounted beside the door, making contact with the sensor pad. The device emits a beep as an 'Access Denied' error is displayed.//
//The room freezes. No one moves. No one speaks.//
**Commander Greaves:** //(His voice calm, almost too calm)// Does she… do that often?
//The silence drags on. The personnel exchange uneasy glances. No one speaks.//
**Commander Greaves:** //(His voice snaps like a whip, booming across the room)// I asked, does she do that often?!
//The sudden shift in tone jolts the room. A researcher, pale and visibly shaken, finally raises a trembling hand.//
**Researcher:** Y-yes, sir. That's… that’s where we keep the cat food. She figured it out and tries to open it.
**Commander Greaves:** //(His voice trails off as he watches Fluffy)// Director, do you have authorisation to have a cat in this site?
**Director Mercer:** Yes, commander. We followed every protocol. She’s been extensively tested - no anomalous properties were found. She’s really just a cat.
**Commander Greaves:** //(Lowering his voice)// Demands to be fed or played... Seeks elevated areas... Red point of light to distract... Behaves as if she is a god...
//Commander turns his gaze upon Fluffy again.//
**Director Mercer:** //(Following his gaze, seeing Fluffy, and then looking back at the Commander with wide eyes)// Fluffy? You think... no, that can’t be it.
//Greaves doesn’t respond at first. His jaw sets, his eyes fixed on the cat. The weight in his shoulders shifts - what was once dread starts to loosen, but something else simmers just beneath. His fists tighten. A vein in his temple twitches.//
**Commander Greaves:** I'm going to ask this only once, and I want a quick answer.
//He inhales sharply through his nose, his shoulders dropping as he exhales. When he speaks again, his tone is lower, steady, but clearly irritated.//
**Commander Greaves:** Now, may the asshole who got bored at work and created a Keter class scp file for the site's cat, please step forward?
//There is a moment of hesitation, but finally a researcher steps up.//
**Researcher:** I... did, sir. But I only saved it locally to this site, never pushed it to the database.
//Commander Greaves types something on his tablet. A few seconds pass with silence, as he is focused on the tablet.//
**Commander Greaves:** Researcher Shaw. It appears you were actually telling the truth. You did write those experiment results for 8406. Except, you somehow managed to write them under the cat’s entry and then pushed the changes through. That little mix-up? It uploaded that joke file straight into the database. And now, here we are.
//The researchers visibly relax, some emitting brief chuckles as the tension subsides. The Commander shakes his head, with a reluctant grin forming.//
**Commander Greaves:** //(Sighing deeply)// Alright, folks. Lockdown lifted. The O5s are going to tear you apart when they hear about this mess, but it’s no longer my problem. At least you didn’t cause a Keter breach, right?
//The room breaks into relieved laughter as the MTF team stands down. An Alpha-1 agent removes the handcuffs from Director Mercer. Commander Greaves gives Fluffy a gentle pat before leaving the cafeteria.//

My first scp article. The idea was not easy, and I probably couldn't execute it perfectly. Still, I think it's a nice one, and I'm proud of it.
Thanks to everyone for the idea and draft critique.
https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-16983891/scp-8604#post-6727710 response to comment, "The only real gripe I'd have with this is that this probably isn't Alpha-1's job. More likely Epsilon-11. And on a similar note, the orders would probably come from 04 Command. Other than that, +1!"
Thanks, glad you liked it.
Alpha-1 was a weird choice for sure, but I felt like it had to be them for the story to work. If it was Epsilon-11, they would have spotted the mix-up almost immediately, which would not have lead to a high tension, and the ending wouldn't feel as good. Because of this, I felt like I needed an MTF that has elite soldiers with low investigative capabilities. I tried to justify this in the story with the suspicion of a cultist contamination in the site, which needs elite soldiers to deal with.
https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-16983891/scp-8604#post-6727580 response to comment, "Did you use AI to write this? Because according to the AI detector I put your text through, around 75% of this text was generated using AI."
No, I wrote it myself. But someone else also said it felt AI generated during draft crit, so you weren't the only one to suspect this. Maybe my writing style is a bit too mechanical.
You can check idea and draft crit process and how the article evolved in discord threads (the thread name is Fluffy)
Of note, the user did tell one reviewer:
I do use ai for a few things, but never use any actual text generated by an ai in the draft
