Item #: SCP-8986
Object Class: Keter
Special Containment Procedure: SCP-8986 is to be stored at Site-42 in a bio-containment chamber, Reinforced for the purpose. Said chamber is to be hermetically sealed and fitted with automated decontamination systems. The internal environment is to be maintained at -20°c to restrict the growth of instances of SCP-8986-1. Air circulation is to be constantly scanned for the presence of SCP-8986-1 spores, and any such detection is to immediately seal off the chamber and initiate a Level-4 biohazard response.
SCP-8986 personnel must undergo rigorous training in biohazard containment and are equipped with Class-4 biohazard suits at all times while interfacing with the object directly. All materials leaving or any samples taken from the containment chamber of SCP-8986 are to undergo a 72-hour quarantine followed by thorough examination and sterilization.
In the event of a breach that leads to uncontrollable spread of SCP-8986-1 outside of containment, Protocol Verdant-12 is to be initiated: this is to include the use of incendiary devices and herbicidal agents to neutralize all growths of SCP-8986-1 within a 5-kilometer radius.
No personnel below Clearance Level 4 is to be granted access to SCP-8986; all experimentation and handling require prior approval by at least two Level 4 or higher personnel.
Description: SCP-8986 is a small, intricately cut jade box measuring in at around 15 by 10 by 5 centimeters. The box has depictions of different kinds of plant species; several of these are, at present, confirmed not to match any kind of botanical knowledge held by modern botany. Scientific clichés consider the object to be ancient, possibly running into several millennia, though the date is, of course, not determined.
Upon opening, SCP-8986 emits a fine, green particulate matter hereby referred to as SCP-8986-1, analyzed to be a type of abnormally aggressive anomalous plant spore. Said spores constantly and immediately take root in any organic material they come into contact with, including but not limited to soil and wood and most living organisms. (Within minutes said spores will begin to sprout into fast-growing plants that have several highly unusual properties.).
These plants, designated as SCP-8986-2, exhibit fast-growth properties and a plethora of dangerous behaviors other than just this, including:
- Carnivorous Tendencies: A minority of SCP-8986-2 instances seem to have a method by which to form elaborate maw-like or tendril-like appendages for the capture and ingestion of living organisms.
- Spore Dispersal: SCP-8986-2 plants produce copious numbers of spores into the atmosphere from SCP-8986-1 before having the ability to germinate and mature, developing new SCP-8986-2 plants in locations near them.
- Adaptive Growth: SCP-8986-2 displays a high tendency of adapting quickly to environmental conditions. Observations have shown it to grow continuously in the most inhospitable of environments, including deserts, arctic tundras, and even underwater.
Once established, growth of SCP-8986-2 is notoriously hard to control; most standard containment measures to date have enjoyed limited success. Attempts to remove the SCP-8986-2 physically always result in rapid regrowth of the plants from remaining fragments.
Addendum XXXX-A: Initial Recovery Report
SCP-XXXX was recovered in 19██ from a remote archaeological site in ███████, China, following reports of a breakout of anomalous plant life that eradicated a village. A find was made following the issuance of Mobile Task Force Lambda-12 ("Gardeners") into the area, which was discovered to be contaminated with prolific SCP-8986-2 throughout an area within a 2-kilometer radius. The team suffered heavy casualties during the containment process; 8 of the original 12 members lost their lives due to SCP-8986-2.
SCP-8986 was found within an altar in the remains of an ancient temple destroyed in an avalanche. The object was extracted and moved to Site-42 for containment within a Hazmat locker. Sterilization procedures were then effected on the village, as well as its countryside, to preclude re-infection.
Addendum 8986-B: Incident Report 8986-01
Date: 20██-05-14
Location: Site-42, SCP-8986 Containment Chamber
SCP-8986 was activated from a routine check that Dr. Lin had made, fiddling with the lid of the box. Before the chamber's lockdown took effect, a small amount of the SCP-8986-1 spores was seeded inside the chamber. These spores almost immediately sprouted into the floor of the chamber. This led to a mass infection of SCP-8986-2 into the monitored containment area.
Containment Protocol Verdant-12 was activated, flooding the entire chamber with herbicidal gas. However, this did not appear to affect the SCP-8986-2 instances, which thus required incendiary devices for deployment against them. In turn, this resulted in heavy structural damage to the containment chamber, and Dr. Lin was placed in quarantine for 72 hours. The remaining tests with Dr. Lin were negative for SCP-8986-1 spore activity, but incidentally the containment chamber was out of commission for 3 weeks for repairs due to damage.
Addendum 8986-C: Interview Log 8986-02
Interviewed: Researcher Dr. Lin
Interviewer: Agent Walters
Date: 20██-05-15
[Begin Log]
Agent Walters: Could you describe to me what happened before Incident 8986-01 occurred?
Dr. Lin: It was a cursory examination… I wasn't even paying attention to the box itself, really. Just saw that the carvings had some abrasion and thought that might be worth noting. When I went to push the lid, it just… opened. Barely a crack, but that was all it took.
Agent Walters: And what happened after the release of spores?
Dr. Lin: It was sort of greenish haze, and then the flooring suddenly sprouted; it was growing so fast. I couldn't believe it. I tried to get out, but by then already the plants were growing all over the place… I… I should have been more careful.
Agent Walters: The incident report says something about the herbicidal gas being ineffective. Can you elaborate on that?
Dr. Lin: The plants… they almost instantly adapted. Their leaves thickened out, and a number of them produced a sap that neutralized the gas. It was like it was evolving right there in front of me. I have never seen anything like it.
Agent Walters: Thank you, Dr. Lin. That will be all for now.

Addendum 8986-D: Experiment Log 8986-Alpha
Experiment 8986-Alpha-1: Isolation of SCP-8986-1 spore following exposure to sterilized dirt and sunlight. |
---|
Results: After approximately 10 minutes, SCP-8986-2 starts to sprout and becomes a very dense tangle of thorned vines. The roots whip aggressively around objects in close proximity and, at length, entangle the observation drone. |
Experiment 8986-Alpha-2: SCP-8986-1 Spore sample exposed to sealed, arid environment with limited presence of accessible water. |
Results: SCP-8986-2 quickly adapted by growing an extensive root system, extending far into the soil for acquisition of moisture. Vegetation adapted to be cactiform, with a few very long, dagger-sized spines. With the rise of the chamber temperature, the plants begin to exude a highly volatile resin. |
Experiment 8986-Alpha-3: SCP-8986-1 Spore Exposure to a Marine Environment. |
Results: SCP-8986-2 was aquatic in form, appearing superficially as seaweed but one of a carnivorous nature. The plants released pulsating bioluminescent waves that would draw in marine life to be ensnared by its rapidly growing appendages. |
Addendum 8986-E: Exploration Log 8986-Beta
Mission Brief: Study into the origins of SCP-8986, based on findings recovered from the archaeological site.
Team Leader: Dr. Morrison
Location: Ruins of ███████ Temple, ███████, PRC
Objective: Discover the origin and purpose of SCP-8986.
[Begin Log]
Dr. Morrison: We’ve reached the inner sanctum. The carvings here… they match those on it. It’s clear this temple was built to contain it.
Agent Harris: Contain or protect?
Dr. Morrison: Hard to say. These symbols. they suggest a warning, but there's reverence too. It's as if they knew the power of it and feared it, yet also respected it.
Agent Harris: And what about this altar?
Dr. Morrison: This is where we found the box. Some of the writings here speak of some sort of something giving life yet killing it. The writing is somewhat fragmented, but it speaks of a life-death cycle of some sort, apparently.
Agent Harris: Is there something larger that it is with? Something which renews life following a cataclysm of some sort?
Dr. Morrison: Yeah. Those are going to require a lot more attention to detail, but it is demonstrably anything but a simple artifact. There is something much greater at work here.

Addendum 8986-F: Incident Report 8986-09
Date: 20██-07-22
Location: Site-42, SCP-8986 Containment Chamber
A sudden containment breach when spores of SCP-8986-1 were located in the ventilation of Site-42, signaling some sort of invisible leak from the containment area. In a relatively short time frame, the spores had dispersed throughout the site and initiated outbreaks of SCP-8986-2 at several locations. Protocol Verdant-12 was enacted posthaste; despite this, the growths of SCP-8986-2 proved highly resistant to efforts of containment.
Site-42 was fully evacuated but the entire site was sterilized through a Level-5 procedure involving detonation of incendiary charges. Casualty reports indicate that ██ personnel were lost during the incident.
Addendum 8986-G: Recovery Log 8986-Gamma
Date: 20██-07-23
Location: Site-42, Post-Sterilization Survey
A recovery team was sent in after the sterilization of Site-42 to gauge the amount of damage and make certain that all instances of SCP-8986-2 had been destroyed. The team was fitted with portable scanning devices to pick up any lingering spores of SCP-8986-1.
Team Leader: Agent Collins
Location: Site-42, Ground Zero
[Begin Log]
Agent Collins: We're getting close to the epicenter of that explosion. Sensors are showing little to no life signs, but we're getting some minor anomalous reads. Proceed with caution.
Agent Reed: Roger that. Running a scan of the area. stand by, I've got something. Very slight, but there is definitely a pocket of SCP-8986-1 spores up ahead.
Agent Collins: Affirmative. Alright everyone, suit up and get ready for the possibility of some SCP-8986-2 growth. Keep each other in sight at all times.
The team continues into what was once the main containment chamber. The room is heavily destroyed, with charred remains of SCP-8986-2 covering the walls and floor. Despite the destruction, a faint green glow appears to be emanating from the center of the room.
Agent Collins: That's gotta be it. Let's take a closer look.
The jade box, SCP-8986, remains unbroken and is situated in the smoldering ruins of SCP-8986-2. The box shows no damage consistent with the very high temperatures created by the incendiary charges.
Agent Reed: I'm reading increased spore activity around the box. We have to quarantine this entire area right now.
Agent Collins: Agreed. All teams, fall back and prepare for secondary containment measures. This time we're not taking any chances.
The team evacuates, and the remains of the containment chamber are resealed under conditions of intensive quarantine. SCP-8986 is recovered and relocated to a new containment unit designed to resist biological and thermal hazards.

Addendum 8986-H: Experiment Log 8986-Beta
Experiment 8986-Beta-1:Testing the Effects of Extreme Conditions on SCP-8986. |
---|
Objective: To determine if there is any method by which SCP-8986 can be neutralized. |
Procedure: SCP-8986 was exposed to a number of extreme conditions, including: Extreme Heat: The temperatures exceeded 1500°C. Cryogenic Freezing: The temperature experienced by SCP-8986 was below -200°C. High-Pressure Environments: Reaching as high as 10,000 atm. Corrosive Agents: Including highly concentrated acids and bases. |
Results: SCP-8986 was not in any way affected by any one of the tested conditions. The jade box remained intact, with no signs of wear or abrasion, amongst others. Physical destruction of SCP-8986 via direct means (hydraulic press, high-power laser, etc) similarly proved unsuccessful. |
Further testing has revealed that SCP-8986 may be surrounded with a form of passive anomalous protection - it cannot be destroyed through conventional means. A theory exists suggesting that the carvings on the box have a contribution to this effect in some way, serving effectively as a type of "lock" which keeps it contained.
Addendum 8986-I: Final Analysis
Dr. Morrison's Note:
All in all, SCP-XXXX is a deep threat that has to be contained due to the possible consequences it may have. Because it is so unusual, it calls for being always on guard for it and trying out new ways of controlling it. Our main work, as the researchers of SCP-XXXX, therefore revolves around continuing denial of its usage while due research is conducted to reveal more about the nature and effects of this object.
