Item #: SCP-8044
Object Class: Keter
Special Containment Procedures:
SCP-8044 is to be contained within a 10m x 10m x 10m reinforced suspended containment cell with no less than 15m clearance on all sides at Site-19. The walls of the cell must be lined with a specialized tungsten alloy capable of withstanding extreme physical force. The cell must be monitored via closed-circuit cameras and the entity must be physically restrained by iron chains at all times. No fewer than four armed guards are to be stationed outside SCP-8044's containment chamber, rotating every four hours to prevent mental fatigue.
All personnel assigned to SCP-8044 must undergo extensive psychological training to resist its mental influence. Any signs of psychological distress or violent behavior must be reported immediately, and the affected personnel must be relieved from duty and quarantined for further evaluation.
In the event of a containment breach, Site-19 is to initiate immediate lockdown protocols. Mobile Task Force Tau-16 ("Oni Slayers") is to be dispatched to recontain SCP-8044 using traditional Japanese weaponry and specialized tranquilizers. If Tau-16 does not succeed to re-establish containment of SCP-8044, the onsite nuclear warhead is to be detonated.
Description:
SCP-8044 is a humanoid male entity that stands approximately 3 meters tall with a heavily muscled build and is dressed in typical Muromachi period clothing. Analysis of what the entity knows about Japanese history indicates that it originated around this time period, though this is not concrete evidence. It has heavily scarred deep crimson skin, and it possesses two large, curved horns protruding from its forehead. The entity has sharp teeth, accompanied by a pair of large tusks jutting from the upper jaw, which have been used to dispatch and occasionally consume personnel during breaches. It does not need to sleep or eat, and it is unclear whether the consumption of personnel is for personal enjoyment or to instill fear in staff during breaches. The entity is immune to almost all conventional forms of damage, though theoretically it may be temporarily neutralized through nuclear weaponry. However, it is particularly susceptible to damage from traditionally forged Japanese weapons and it is possible to subdue it temporarily with large enough quantities of tranquilizers, though it seems impossible to permanently neutralize the entity even with these methods. Aside from the extreme durability of the entity, it also possesses aggressive healing and regenerative properties, which only slow down when a wound is inflicted by the aforementioned Japanese weapons, although scarring on the skin occurs when damage is inflicted.
Upon capture, SCP-8044 wielded a kanabo, a traditional Japanese spiked club, designated SCP-8044-1. The kanabo is approximately 2 meters in length and is composed of an unknown, seemingly indestructible material that superficially resembles cast iron. SCP-8044 used this weapon with devastating effect, capable of shattering reinforced barriers and causing catastrophic damage to its surroundings, and seemed to be able to control local weather patterns through anonymous means to be able to weaponize lightning. Upon containment, the weapon was moved to protected storage at Site-19.
SCP-8044 emits a powerful memetic aura of malevolence, inducing extreme psychological distress, fear, and violent tendencies in individuals within a 15-meter radius, though this area of effect has been known to grow larger and more intense occasionally. This effect grows stronger the longer an individual remains in proximity to SCP-8044. Prolonged exposure has led to severe psychological trauma and, in some cases, self-destructive behavior. This effect becomes more acute and powerful even at a range when one locks eyes with the entity, who seems to be very aware of this effect and takes enjoyment in the suffering it causes others through this method.
SCP-8044 is highly intelligent and exhibits a sadistic personality. It speaks multiple languages fluently, including Japanese, English, several ancient dialects, and languages from anomalous locations, including ████, ██████, and ███, though it seems to heavily prefer Old Japanese. SCP-8044 often attempts to manipulate and psychologically torment personnel, exploiting their fears and insecurities.
Additionally, the entity cannot be photographed. Any attempts to do so have only resulted in a picture of the surrounding environment as if it weren't there. However, it is visible on taped and digital video camera feed.
Addendum 8044-A: Recovery Log 8044
Location: ██████, Japan
Date: ██/██/20██
Recovery Team: Mobile Task Force Tau-16 ("Oni Slayers")
Foreword: SCP-8044 was discovered following reports of unexplained violent outbreaks in the remote village of ██████, Japan. Initial reconnaissance indicated the presence of an anomalous entity terrorizing the village. MTF Tau-16 was deployed to investigate and contain the entity.
Report:
Upon arrival, MTF Tau-16 found the village in chaos. Multiple structures were destroyed, and several terminated and eviscerated villagers were found, assumedly by the anomaly. SCP-8044 was located at the center of the disturbance, wielding its kanabo and actively engaging with remaining villagers.
When the entity was engaged by Tau-16, it demonstrated significant physical resilience, shrugging off conventional weaponry. MTF Tau-16 called in backup, who employed specialized tranquilizers and tactical maneuvers to subdue SCP-8044, eventually restraining it with reinforced chains and sedatives.
SCP-8044 was transported to Site-19 under heavy guard. During transport, the entity remained conscious, displaying a calm demeanor and occasionally whispering to nearby personnel. These whispers induced severe anxiety and paranoia, necessitating the rotation of transport personnel every 15 minutes.
Post-Recovery Analysis:
Following containment, it was discovered that SCP-8044 had influenced the villagers over several weeks, driving them to madness and violence. The village of ██████ was placed under quarantine, and surviving villagers were administered Class-A amnestics and relocated. The area is now under Foundation surveillance to monitor for any residual anomalous activity.
End of Recovery Log.
Post-Recovery Interview with Senior Agent Hiroshi:
Location: ██████, Japan
Date: ██/██/20██
Interviewer: Dr. ██████
Interviewee: Senior Agent Hiroshi Tanaka, MTF Tau-16 ("Oni Slayers")
Note: During Recovery of SCP-8044, three of the four agents of the squad from Tau-16 that were initially sent for recovery were terminated by the entity. Agent Hiroshi was left in a critical state after the incident.
[Begin Log]
Dr. ██████: Good morning Hiroshi. How are we today?
Hiroshi: Terrible. You?
Dr. ██████: It's been a long day, though I can't complain looking at you. Would you mind telling me how you got that?
Dr. ██████ gestures to his arm and both legs, all in casts, as well as a life support system by his bedside.
Hiroshi points to his broken arm with his free hand, wincing with the movement
Hiroshi: Well I got this when it–
Dr. ██████: No no, please start from the beginning. As much as you can remember.
Hiroshi pauses briefly, then draws a deep breath while he stares at nothing in particular toward a wall opposite the end of his bed.
Hiroshi: Well…on the bright sunny morning of ██/██/20██. We were deployed to the remote village of ██████, Japan, following reports of unexplained violent outbreaks. Initial reconnaissance suggested an anomalous entity, and command confirmed the presence of an SCP matching traditional Oni descriptions.
We landed at 0500 hours. The village was eerily silent. No birds, no rustling leaves—just the oppressive weight of silence. Our intel briefed us on potential psychological effects. We were prepared for anything, or so we thought. They didn't tell us just how bad those effects would be, or how damn strong that thing was.
At 0530 hours, we approached the village center. The destruction was immediate and widespread—buildings reduced to rubble, fires everywhere, the air thick with dust and the acrid smell of burnt wood. In the center of it all stood SCP-8044.
It was massive, about half again as tall as our guys, with skin the color of dried blood, two large, curved horns and a wicked toothy grin that was framed by a pair of massive tusks. It held what I recognized to be a kanabo, a traditional spiked club often used by the samurai of old, and it was swinging it with devastating effect. We witnessed it crush a stone pillar with one blow. Agent Nakamura about shit himself watching that. It was his first time out in the field, the poor guy…
The thing turned towards us, and I felt its eyes bore into my soul. A wave of dread washed over me, and I'm sure the feeling hit the other guys, but we pressed on, adhering to our training as best we could.
We pushed on to initially engage the thing with non-lethal measures. We aimed to incapacitate SCP-8044 with tranquilizers, but they might as well have been spitballs. As soon as we engaged, it moved with terrifying speed, closing the 50 or so meters between us in seconds. Operative Sato was the first to fall, struck by the kanabo. His armor crumpled like paper. Every time that thing hit something, it sounded like a clap of thunder that'd make your ears ring.
Agent Hiroshi pauses for a moment, taking a shaky breath, then resumes.
We scattered, using the ruins for cover. SCP-8044's aura was palpable—an oppressive force that gnawed at our sanity. I felt an urge to turn my weapon on myself, or fall to my knees crying, but I fought it. We had a mission.
At 0630 hours, we managed to corral SCP-8044 into a narrow alley. Operative Nakamura and I flanked it, while Operative Yamada provided covering fire. Nakamura launched a hard net, y'know, the ones made of high strength polymer that fire as a kind of wedge shaped thing and then unfolds into a hollow cone midair to land on and surround whatever you’re firing at? Anyway, it was designed to withstand immense force, and for a moment, it looked like it worked. The Oni roared, a sound that shook my bones, but the net held.
Then through the net I saw it smile—a chilling, knowing grin. With a surge of strength, it tore free, sending shards of the net flying. One of them struck Yamada, incapacitating him.
Desperation set in. We couldn't fail. I called for backup, and command dispatched additional units. Meanwhile, we resorted to heavier firepower, using concussive grenades. Didn't really seem to hurt the thing though, but it did disorient it for a moment, and we retreated as quickly and as far as we could until reinforcements could get there. After it recovered though, it was pissed.
At about 0720 hours, reinforcements arrived with advanced tranquilizers and reinforced chains. We coordinated a pincer movement, driving SCP-8044 into a trap. It fought viciously, each swing of its kanabo a death sentence for some of the recovery team, but we kept going.
Hiroshi pauses again, his eyes watering.
As we closed in…Nakamura got hit first. It damn near looked like it snapped him in half, and it sent him flying like a ragdoll. Then out of nowhere, Yamada runs out of what was left of one of the houses, screaming out a battle cry and holding what looked like a sword. He caught the thing off guard I guess. Caught me off guard too, I thought he was dead back when a chunk of the net hit him. Anyway, he ran the thing right through the belly and it stopped for a second and roared in pain, then it looked down at him. The hate in its eyes…gods, I haven't seen such a fury since I saw that guy in the box while he was being transferred to a different cell. It grabbed him by the chest, the sword still in it, and just…it bit his head off. That thing just ended him like that. It was brutal. Poor Yamada, but at least he knew what he was getting himself into. Nakamura had no clue what was coming. Then he dropped him and pulled the sword out if its gut like it was nothing.
All the while, our backup was firing all kinds of munitions at it and it was just like paper bouncing off it without so much as a mark. They switched to tranquilizers, a new experimental type for more durable anomalies like these. Those stuck at least, but not before it charged me down and busted my arm here, then the next thing I saw was the back of its hand and I was knocked clean out.
Finally, at 0815 hours, I came to in a reinforced transport. The tranquilizers they were using on it never knocked it out, but they had finally taken effect enough for the Oni's movements to slow down enough for them to restrain it and get it in a box. They bound it with reinforced iron chains, each link designed to resist enormous pressure. The creature glared at me and the others, its eyes promising retribution, but it was contained. I asked what site we were going to, and an agent I don't remember the name of right now told me we were on route to Site 50 temporarily to assess where the big dogs wanted to take it to.
During transport, SCP-8044 remained conscious, whispering horrid shit to anyone who dared listen. We ended up having to rotate personnel every 15 minutes so we could get a break from that thing and what it was saying and the feeling it gave us. Even sedated, its presence was a constant threat.
At 1200 hours, we arrived at Site-50. SCP-8044 was transferred to a specialized containment cell. The relief was palpable, but so was the exhaustion. We had faced something out of legend and survived, y'know? That thing was terrifying, and I've rarely seen something that was such an avatar of perfect hatred in all my years here at the Foundation.
The next day, we got the call to move it over to Site-19. On the way over, it was pretty much the same stuff, but at least we knew what we were dealing with this time. That, and I was in such a messed up state that I ended up not having to watch the thing fortunately. I stayed happily in the medical cabin on the plane where I could get some badly needed rest after the mess that was recovering that thing. We just made sure to keep it pumped full of sedatives to keep it relatively calm the whole way. We definitely didn't want an incident at cruising altitude.
When we arrived site-side, it was good to see the anomaly get moved from the standard high strength anomalous temporary containment cell to something more sturdy. After that, onsite staff handled everything for us and they brought me in here to properly recover, and that's the end of the story for me.
Dr. ██████ has been seen silently writing in her clipboard the entire time. She finally looks up from her notes, thanks Agent Hiroshi, then gets up from her chair and leaves the room.
[End Log]
Post-Recovery Analysis:
The debrief highlighted the entity's raw might, as well as intelligence and sadistic nature. It exploited recovery agents’ fears after capture, manipulating their minds with ease. Dr. ██████ suggested further research into counteracting its psychological and possible memetic effects.
Operative Hiroshi is recovering but is under psychological observation. It is recommended that all surviving agents be given a psychological counseling program to recover from the memetic effects of the entity, and/or anmesticized if necessary.
Closing Statement:
SCP-8044 is not just a physical threat. It is a force of malevolence, capable of mental torment just as well as physical. Maintaining containment is top priority.
Addendum 8044-B: Incident Report
On ██/██/20██, SCP-8044 breached containment due to a power failure affecting its containment cell. SCP-8044 proceeded to massacre ██ security personnel and ██ researchers before MTF Tau-16 was able to recontain it using advanced tranquilizers and tactical measures. Following this incident, containment procedures were revised, and additional fail-safes were implemented to prevent future breaches.
Interview Log 8044-C
Interviewer: Dr. ██████
Interviewed: SCP-8044
Dr. ██████: SCP-8044, can you understand me?
SCP-8044: (In Japanese) Yes, I understand you.
Dr. ██████: Why do you torment those around you?
SCP-8044: (Laughs) Torment is my purpose. Your fear, your pain, they are exquisite. I am what your kind have called a demon, born from the hatred and suffering of countless souls.
The interviewer is about to speak again when she notices the entity staring directly in her eyes and smiling as its eyes glow. After a moment, she screams, then drops her clipboard and falls to her knees while holding her head, trembling and whimpering.
SCP-8044: (Smiling) You cannot quell the fury of the damned. Contain me if you can, but through my rage, I will always find a way to escape this fetid prison.
Interview concludes and Dr. ██████ is escorted out of the chamber by armed personnel.
Notes: It is recommended to avoid direct eye contact with the entity, as this allows the memetic effects to affect the victim more strongly.
Interview log D:
Interviewer: Dr. ██████
Interviewed: SCP-8044
Foreword: This interview was conducted following the observation of a significant drop in lost SCP objects and staff casualties across the Foundation after the capture and containment of SCP-8044, particularly at Site-19. Dr. ██████ seeks to explore this phenomenon and its possible connection to SCP-8044.
[BEGIN LOG]
Dr. ██████: Good afternoon, SCP-8044.
SCP-8044 is motionless, then breaks into a sinister smile.
SCP-8044: Is it? Your definition of "good" might differ from mine, doctor.
Dr. ██████: I suppose that’s true. I wanted to ask you about something rather interesting we’ve noticed. Since your containment, there has been a remarkable decrease in incidents involving lost SCP objects and staff casualties across our sites, especially at Site-19.
SCP-8044 now leans forward, clearly interested in what Dr. ██████ is saying.
SCP-8044: Oh? And you believe this to be my doing?
Dr. ██████: Well, it’s just a theory, but…some in the Foundation have speculated that you might be a bringer of good fortune. After all, Oni in some myths are known for bestowing luck, despite their fearsome nature.
SCP-8044 bellows in laughter momentarily, then begins to speak after its laughter dies down.
SCP-8044: Fortune? From me? How amusing. And what do you think, Dr. ██████? Do you think I am your lucky charm?
Dr. ██████: I’m more interested in the truth. Do you have any influence over such matters?
SCP-8044 narrows its eyes sinisterly.
SCP-8044: Perhaps. The threads of fate are delicate, easily manipulated by those who understand their weave. But tell me, doctor, do you truly believe that my presence here is beneficial to your kind?
After a brief hesitation, Dr. ██████ replies.
Dr. ██████: The data suggests a correlation, but I’m wary of drawing conclusions without sufficient evidence.
SCP-8044: How scientific of you. But let me ask you this: if I were indeed a source of fortune, what price do you think such fortune demands?
Dr. ██████: That’s precisely what we’re trying to understand. If you do influence our outcomes, we need to know if there are any risks or costs associated, aside from the direct risk of keeping you in containment.
SCP-8044 now leans back. It is clearly more eager to talk than previous interviews.
SCP-8044: Ah, always with the costs. Your kind never changes. Always seeking balance, never accepting that some things simply are… I could tell you, but where’s the fun in that?
Dr. ██████: We need to ensure the safety of our personnel and operations. Any information you provide could help us manage—
SCP-8044: Safety. Such a fragile illusion. But fine, I’ll play your game. Maybe, just maybe, my presence shifts the tides in your favor. Maybe the universe balances my wrath with fortune, for now. But remember this, doctor: nothing comes without a price. When the scales tip, you may find the cost far greater than you imagined.
Dr. ██████: Understood. Thank you for your… candor.
SCP-8044: Oh, Dr. ██████, you have no idea what you’re thanking me for.
[END LOG]
Addendum:
Note from Dr. ██████:
Following the observations of a significant decrease in lost SCP objects and staff casualties across the Foundation, particularly at Site-19, a thorough investigation was conducted to determine the cause of this phenomenon.
Findings:
1. It has been confirmed that the primary cause of the observed improvements is the implementation of new safety and lockout protocols across the Foundation that were coincidentally put in place around the time of SCP-8044’s containment. Prior to this note, knowledge of these changes were above most staff's and my own security level. These protocols include stricter access controls, enhanced training for personnel, and upgraded containment measures for high-risk SCPs. The correlation between these protocols and the decrease in incidents is clear and supported by comprehensive data analysis.
2. Despite the rational explanation provided by the new protocols, it is important to note that the belief in SCP-8044 as a bringer of good fortune has become widespread among Foundation personnel. Mythological creatures, including those akin to SCP-8044, are often influenced by the beliefs and perceptions of those around them, and those around them are often similarly affected. For instance, we have no true power against such anomalies as SCP-2845, yet we are able to maintain containment because we have tricked it into a pattern of thinking it is contained. Similarly, SCP-8044 thinks it has brought us “fortune” of sorts, so it is hypothesized that this is also a major factor in the increased rate of capture and the security of contained objects. The psychological impact of such belief should not be underestimated, and neither should the anomalous impact with such anomalies.
Conclusion:
While the new safety and lockout protocols are the primary drivers behind the improved safety record, the possibility that the collective belief in SCP-8044’s beneficial influence may play a secondary role cannot be entirely ruled out, as well as SCP-8044's own belief. The interplay between belief and the anomalous properties of mythological entities is a complex area that warrants further study.
Recommendations:
1. Continued Monitoring: Continue to monitor the effects of SCP-8044 on site operations and personnel behavior. Any significant changes in incident rates should be analyzed in the context of both procedural improvements and psychological and anomalous factors.
2. Further Research: Initiate research into the impact of collective belief on the properties of SCP-8044 and similar entities. Understanding this dynamic could provide valuable insights into the management and containment of mythologically influenced SCPs.
3. Psychological Support: Provide ongoing psychological support and training for personnel to ensure that beliefs and perceptions do not adversely affect their performance and decision-making.
By acknowledging the practical, anomalous, and psychological aspects of SCP-8044's containment, we can better manage its influence and continue to improve safety and efficiency across the Foundation.
End of Note.
Addendum 8044-F: Incident Report
On ██/██/20██, SCP-8044 exhibited unprecedented levels of aggression during a routine test. Dr. ███████, who had been in the observation room for only five minutes, began exhibiting signs of severe distress, including screaming and self-harm, and attempted self-immolation with a lighter that was on his person before being subdued. Security footage later revealed SCP-8044 staring directly into the camera prior to the incident, appearing to focus on Dr. ███████. Immediate medical attention was required to stabilize Dr. ███████, who remains under psychiatric observation.
Addendum 8044-G: Incident Report
Not long after incident 8044-F, on ██/██/20██, SCP-8044 was temporarily moved to a reinforced observation chamber for testing. During this time, SCP-8044 managed to breach containment by exploiting a minor flaw in the chamber's structural integrity. SCP-8044 was observed methodically dismantling several layers of reinforced steel before emerging into the hallway, where it encountered and killed ██ personnel. MTF Tau-16 responded, successfully recontaining SCP-8044 after a prolonged engagement that resulted in significant structural damage to Site-19.
Note: Following Incident 8044-G, all testing with SCP-8044 has been suspended, pending O-5 review.
Interview Log 8044-H
Interviewer: Dr. ██████
Dr. ██████: SCP-8044, can you explain why you targeted Dr. ███████ specifically during Incident 8044-F?
SCP-8044: (In Japanese) He was weak. His mind was ripe for plucking. I could smell his fear, taste his despair. Delicious.
Dr. ██████: What do you hope to achieve by causing such suffering?
SCP-8044: (Laughs) Suffering is its own reward. Every scream, every drop of blood spilled, it feeds me. The more you try to contain me, the sweeter your despair.
Dr. ██████: Do you have any weaknesses we should be aware of?
SCP-8044: (Smiling) Weakness? No. I am eternal. I am wrath incarnate. You will never find peace while I exist.
Dr. ██████: This interview is concluded.
Addendum 8044-I: Incident Report
On ██/██/20██, SCP-8044's containment cell experienced a malfunction in the surveillance system. During the 30-minute blackout, SCP-8044 did not attempt to breach containment. However, upon restoration of the surveillance, SCP-8044 was observed sitting in the middle of its room. Subsequent psychological evaluations of the monitoring staff revealed elevated levels of stress and anxiety, suggesting SCP-8044's awareness and potential influence even through electronic means.
Interview Log 8044-J
Interviewer: Dr. ██████
Interviewed: SCP-8044
Dr. ██████: SCP-8044, why did you not attempt to breach containment during the surveillance blackout?
SCP-8044: (In Japanese) Patience, little human. Fear is more delicious when it festers. I wanted you to wonder, to worry, to lose sleep over what I might do next.
Dr. ██████: Are you suggesting you can influence personnel even without seeing them?
SCP-8044: (Smiling) Fear is a powerful tool. Your technology cannot shield you from it. I see your minds, your fears, your weaknesses. They are laid bare before me.
Dr. ██████: This interview is concluded.
Addendum: Note from Dr. ██████:
I know that the entity can break the chains with relative ease, but the chains slow it down enough for MTF Tau-16 to react in time to avoid a catastrophic breach most of the time, and it's the best we have here. Alongside that, we acknowledge the suggestions to keep it permanently sedated, but we can't risk it building a resistance to the tranquilizers we use to sedate it enough for containment. Any questions or concerns for personnel safety can be directed to me directly instead of spreading rumors about a monster waiting to get loose. That is not conducive to staff morale and gives your fellow staff the impression that assignment to SCP-8044 is a punishment. I want to iterate that it is not and that this is standard procedure for this SCP.
Closing Statement: SCP-8044's behavior during Incident 8044-F indicates a level of strategic thinking and familiarity with modern technology far beyond previous assessments. The entity’s malevolent nature and psychological manipulation capabilities pose a significant threat to Foundation personnel. Enhanced containment protocols and further research into its capabilities are imperative to ensure the safety of Foundation personnel.
