[DISCUSION] Front Page Redesign Proposal 3/06/2024

This is an update for the SCP Wiki's front page.

Mockup: https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/workbench:estrellayoshte (backend changes to be implemented later)

Changes:

• Widens the content space
• Removed imported fonts due to not-insignificant network and content paint performance
• Reframes the top area for survey link's presence, when needed
• Styled Site News block to match theme's design language
• Links to latest site news and SCP seres are listpages-based, so no need for manual updates to those
• Added primer panel for links to latest SCP series, panel for writers and reviewers
• Links to several relevant pages, including 05command
• Mobile optimization.

Notes

• Wider page lacks consistency with default theme
  • Wikipedia does the same, which this models after
• Become a Writer/Reviewer panels can use additional info
• More/less links and information? Which one should be more highlighted to benefit new users/visitors?

While I certainly appreciate the new look of the front page here, I have serious concerns with how the front page's layout is so different from the rest of the site. The wide content and sleek edges feel weirdly modern in conparison with the early-2000s vibes the site theme gives off, which I feel acts in its detriment despite how good it looks otherwise.

I am largely extending the design system set by Rounder's rework of the frontpage, which itself has this disparity. Unless we're willing to walk back on that aesthetic change, or update Sigma-10 to match the modern look, this is where we stand.

Looks good on desktop, looks good on mobile, better use of screen real estate than the current front page.
All and all it seems like a pretty straightforward improvement.

I do agree with Yossi that it feels pretty modern, but I see no real problem with that, personally.

edit: June 6th. Wasn't sure how best to articulate this before, but I do agree with Moo and Lapis that redesign feels a bit overwhelming with all the information on the screen at once.

I do like all the new information and it's presented well enough, but it seems rather overwhelming. There's so little negative space it's hard to focus on any one box I want to read. I think the page width could stay where it is and still work, but the space between components could be increased slightly to make it easier for the eyes to follow.

I like the look of the redesign, it's nice and sleek. I agree that there is a disconnect between this modern-style front page and the older-style rest of the site (most apparent with the sidebar's style, but I understand why it cannot be changed), but it doesn't bother me, personally, all that much

I echo Mooagain's comment though, there is too much stuff on the screen at the same time. It indeed feels overwhelming
