This is an update proposal for the Top Rated Pages By Month and Shortest Pages By Month 2008-Current pages.

Proposed changes:

• Condense all 16 extant pages into one
• Reduce per-month max listing to 100 items, no pagination
• Match aesthetic to front page and others

Assessment

• Pros:
  • The month/year menu auto-updates, nixing the need to create a page every year, adding one ListPages module 12 times.
  • Reduce max rendered ListPages to two (three?), marginally faster load times.

• Cons:
  • Unable to view multiple month's listing at once
  • Each month requires a page reload, which can be annoying

Additional notes

If passes, how should the current pages be handled? Archived, and replaced with this new page? Delete except for one to be converted to the new format? Some other options?
How many pages per month should be displayed?

I like the redesign. The reload as a con might be annoying but there's already some element of needing to reload more than strictly enjoyable in the existing pages.

I think we could likely get away with displaying all pages posted per month for shortest — no scrolling, less reloads, and there probably aren't that much anyways. Maybe exclude any in the negatives. Maybe have a threshold for top-rated: say, +50?

So as it stands the existing pages kind of suck for easily scraping data via Excel. Maybe a more robust programming language could handle it better but that's not portable and wouldn't have any real continuity between DA teams. That was the use case I was hoping they could be good for, but in their current state they're not useful for that. The change to those pages that would help me specifically, once they're no longer user-facing and therefore no longer have to look good, would be to 1) remove all the collapsibles so it's just table after table and 2) remove the page display limit.

As of recent years, this goes anywhere from 150-250 pages per month, averaging maybe ~180. I'm unsure if this is a lot or not in this context. Misread.

Listing by length actually have no threshold cutoff - Currently it's just list top 200 max, otherwise it will sort all the pages that month, which can be anywhere between 100-250.

Maybe have a threshold for top-rated: say, +50?

The currently in-place threshold is >5.

What kind of information is needed? Is it not possible to do it on a workbench page? Or does it need more space to work with?

So regarding the existing pages, it would be helpful to have them in a tabular format so programs can parse them easily, and the info needed would probably just be title, rating, and comment count.

My goal here would be to be able to pull month-by-month rating info for every work that matches the criteria. My goal here would be to compute summary statistics and compare the distributions of comments and upvotes for works posted each month across the site's history.

It's possible to do as a workbench, yes, but if we're keeping these pages anyways for preservation I was hoping we could adjust the aesthetics so they could still have a backend purpose. If we'd prefer to keep the pages as is, I'll probably request a dedicated workbench for this purpose.

I'm somewhat against having Shortest Pages stop at 100 entries per month for the same reason I was against limiting it to 5 pages on the Shortest Pages in the Last 30 Days page. Namely that these can be used backwards to find the longest works as well.

Otherwise this looks good. How much having only one month shown at a time is detrimental to this depends largely on how these pages are actually used, which I have no idea about.

The 100 pages per month is mostly intended for the Top Rated series. If there was a previously established limit for Shortest, I'll keep it.

I think this is a good rework. It looks a lot better and will be easier to maintain.

Regarding all the old pages, such as the ones per-year, I believe we should archive them. Yeah there are a lot, but we aren't paying per-page here, and as a rule I like to avoid hard deletions unless needed, especially for system pages where future staffers may derive benefit from understanding how things were done in the past.
