After a year of progress, Tech is finally ready to update the site themes, as discussed in the above threads. While the Tech Team does not need to pass these proposals through a vote, given the time between the discussion and now, we are bringing this thread to another vote. Additionally, we are bringing forth a minor change to update the logo to an svg with identical appearance, currently used on the Common Theme used on INT sites.

Important update: the Bauhaus font may not be incompatible with the site licensing. It is a currently unanswered question. The Tech Team is electing to proceed with the font change to Sans Normalcy on an aesthetic basis, rather than a licensing one.

(The name is incrementing in number as this is one of the largest single changes we've made to the theme, but it keeps the general aesthetics of the theme relatively similar.)

Please vote yes or no on the following questions.

1. Should the body font be updated to Inter?
2. Should the header font be updated to Sans Normalcy?
3. Should the logo be updated to the svg?

With 24 votes for and no votes against, the body font will be changed.

With 24 votes for and no votes against, the logo will be changed.

With 15 votes for, 5 votes against, and 5 abstentions, the header font will be changed.

Good changes. Long time coming.

Justifications:
I personally would recommend maybe stepping Inter down from 0.95em in #page-content to maybe 0.875em or 0.9em. Feels a little big otherwise. The header font is more of a "maybe" but I'd rather be safe than sorry, and Sans Normalcy is good enough to be a permanent header font. The SVG is nearly identical, no qualms there at all.

For the body font: it's primarily an accessibility change, and although it will take adjusting, I am sure some users will get some benefit out of it. It's also a generally good font and I don't think there will be much issue with it.

For the header font: personally, regardless of the corrections to the Bauhaus font that Sans Normalcy makes, or the expanded character support that Sans Normalcy provides, the Bauhaus font is iconic on the site. Changing it for functionally no reason, even to a similar font, is sure to incur community backlash, even if the crux of it is temporary. (If Licensing circles around and believes it is necessary to change the header font, I hold no objections then, but otherwise my opinion stands). Therefore, I do not believe it is a good idea to change the font and cause a ruckus.

For the SVG logo: it is practically indistinguishable from the old logo except clearer, an SVG, and higher quality. I don't think anyone could hold objection with this change.

Bauhaus has been the single area of the site theme I have seen the most criticism about. We have always been aiming to replace it, and Licensing fears caused us to move faster but were not the only cause for our decision. I strongly support the change — Bauhaus is generally reviled as incredibly outdated.

• not a huge fan of inter but it’s fine. i disagree with jackal, though — i think it’s size is perfect (that’s what she said)
• we meet again, you raggedy-ass old font! Bauhaus came bundled with Sigma-9 when it was made the site font in 2013. That was just around the time Google abandoned the skeumorphic logo for flat colors. It was dated and ugly when it was first made the header font, and it is still dated and ugly. Aside from the licensing concerns, nothing about Bauhaus screams secret-agency or classified-database; there are no aesthetic reasons to preserve it — only sentimental ones.

I just like the aesthetics of the new look. Nothing particularly deep beyond that.
