This is an aggregated update proposal for the Top Bar and Side Bar, with the intent of streamlining several navigation elements.

Additional notes:

• Moving Media links to the bottom was proposed as an option, but currently undecided. Internet Outreach will have final veto in this regard.
• The Contact Us link is already implemented as a standalone addition, but is kept here as a reference.
• This proposal removes Criticism Policy, Licensing Guide and Deletions Guide without substituting for their absence. It's currently unclear how important they are to be kept. Adding an anchor to Policy section in Guide Hub as a replacement for the top bar links is being explored as an option.

Noting that based on the results (from here and the mainsite mirror) we decided to uncollapse, expand and do the rules -> info name change, but not move the social media links or remove the policies from the topbar.

I would also be in favor of folding Sister sites into Community, I don't think it's necessary to have a separate dropdown for only two things, and both are prominently linked from the main page.

Admittedly, this is in part because I'd like to add a Universe dropdown to make various pages providing information on the background more accessible, let me know if you like the idea as demo'd here. Feel free to let me know if there's stuff I should add, or if you think this is just me trying to self-promote my own pages despite a lack of interest from anyone else. I will note that Estrella thinks 8 is way too many links for a top bar dropdown, I feel like that's pushing it but is fine if they're all relevant. Could add anomalous items as well, but I don't think it really needs the prominence.

I think a universe top bar is a good idea, but I also think 8 links is to many. I'd rather make a selection and only put the "most relevant ones" there (whatever those are).

Putting Anomalous Items there might be a good idea because I think that's what most people wanted out of a returning Universe top bar.

Honestly, I am unsure of which of them count as most important, and if that was the criteria I don't think we'd include the AA log. If we want a minimalistic topbar, which I totally get the need for, I'm leaning towards the best solution being to link the Universe Hub more prominently and not hiding it within a collapsible, so that these pages are only a couple of clicks away.

Don't have an opinion on the last option, but if it happens, it would make sense to add links to those policies on the Site Rules page, for visibility.

I will note that the Site Rules already links to the Criticism and Deletions policies, but adding a link to the licensing Guide could be warranted.

I was thinking more of a 'list of links to other site rules' at the top or bottom, so someone wouldn't need to search through the text to find a certain policy.

NOTES:

I think media links should be above interwiki since it changes in size and could make the sidebar feel more awkward.

For New Users is only for a specific group of users and a big part of the links there are links you'll either use once (join the site/guide for newcomers) or only occasionally, so I think it'll take up too much space, especially if in the future people will add more.

No particular opinion on INT/J/EX, but leaning towards dislike due to how much space it takes.

I think a guide anchor will be a good idea, the guides there were kinda arbitrary frankly.

I really dislike how big the sidebar is again and how we're slowly reverting back to "why would I ever use the topbar" times, but I'm not really sure how to fix it. I would take it into consideration though, hopefully avoid returning to the previous mess we had.

Semantically, the sidebar gains Contribute and loses FAQ, which is a net zero change in number of links. I won't say absolute length doesn't matter, but there's an appreciable difference being big due to a shit ton of links and being big due to clearer delineation.

Oh of course, that's why I said I don't know how to fix it (it's only this way because of good features). I was moreso worried at the absolute length, and how it could appear to people who aren't used to how we use the sidebar.

I guess we're in favor of adding something that people apparently use a lot to it (Contribute), plus there's also the Universe Hub the easiest way to access various popular pages like Facilities, MTFs and the Log of Anomalous Items. Currently have that in both the top bar (under resources) and side bar, but if we were going to keep the collapsible just to hide a few links, I'd support moving the Universe Hub down into the slightly more prominent "Stories" section of the sidebar.

As for the exact merits of contribute… we really should revamp it some time soon, adding Series VIII seems to have really messed up the formatting.

Because it's pretty immediately understood and covered by the existing site rules. That and imo the crit policy as written is outdated and needs an overhaul anyway.

For expanding INT|EX|J, I don't see a need to separate EX and J, but INT should definitely stand apart from them. INT isn't a riff on the "standard" format like EX and J, it's its own thing entirely.

I support the Rules -> Info changes assuming we put the Site Rules or a menu containing them somewhere else. This is less an issue of needing to reference them, and more about making them accessible to avoid excuses of not knowing the rules.
