[Discussion] Contest Archive Update

The Contest Archive is serviceable, but meh. This is a call to update it.

http://mast-nav.wikidot.com/contest-archive - Proposed new Archive page.

Concerns

• Adding short blurbs/contest descriptions to each entry.
• Adding unofficial contests, if they were primarily hosted on the -EN wiki, and have an associated tag,
• InternationalGoI-2019 is footnoted, as it has a tag, but not a primarily -EN-hosted contest.

The discussion will last for 7 days, after which the described changes (and further reasonable proposals) will be implemented unless serious concerns are raised. In the event of split opinions, a vote will be held to decide the outcome.

Timer expired. Changes implemented.

I'd be in favor of listing GoI 2019 - I wasn't around at the time but it was a contest in English and quite a lot of people from EN took part, may as well add it to the list. No idea if there'll ever be anything similar in future but if there was we'd definitely want to promote it on EN.

I feel like unofficial contests without tags aren't really big enough to be worth including, whereas NIGHTMAREFEST was such a big thing that it would have been hard to notice it wasn't official.

I like the facts that there's blurbs that will be added.

I would be in favor to add unofficial contests who have their own tags. If they don't have that, no need to add it.

In favor of listing INT-GoI 2019, for the reasons Jerden has stated.

I do like this update. The blurbs we're something I actually already had in mind when wanting to update it.

As for the inclusion of unofficial contests, I would not personally do so, but if people like the idea I would be amenable to adding them as long as we place some kind of asterisk with them to make it clear that they were unofficial contests.

As for the international contest, I am much of the same opinion as the unofficial contests. I wouldn't personally, but if people like the idea, then we need to make it clear that it wasn't an official -EN contest.

Echoing everything Pighead and Jerden said.

1) Blurbs are a shining light in the darkest hours. More blurbs.

2) If they have a tag sure. It shows it was important for the community.

3) Also in favor of adding INT-GoI 2019.

Also, a personal thought: wouldn't be better to put the title instead of the number for X000 contests? One could easily figure out SCP-6000 was published for 6000kon.

This is dope! Big fan of the contest archive. Big fan of giving them better visibility than the table we had. Not that it was bad, just, you know.

Anyway, blurbs are fun. I'd be happy to help write them up if you need a pair of hands. I'm going to go against the grain a little and say that I'm not in favor of including unofficial contests. I always understood the Contest Archive's contests, being under CO's purview, were a listing of official site contests (or contests done before CO was A Thing), which I think is fine as an official page. I think including unofficial site contests would be fine on a case-by-case basis (especially because there are so few of them), though I don't think the INTGOIcon should be there. While it's definitely true a lot of EN authors participated there it also simply wasn't an EN contest - the same logic would mean WL contests could be listed (I don't think they should - CO had no involvement with running them, or with INTGOIcon for that matter).

this is overall p cool

1) blurbs are cool, contests don't happen enough that it becomes too much effort
2) i agree that unofficial contests with tags should be there - not ones without tags tho
3) it wasn't a contest on our wiki why would we put it in the archive. rounder says it better than i would

Given all the points raised, I believe unofficial contests should be added if they satisfy two conditions:

• The contests were primarily hosted on the -EN wiki. Should be self-evident as to why.
• They have an associated tag, codified in the tag manifest. This shows there were prior communication with CO and Tech, and have obtained tacit approval for its presence as a community event, not dissimilar in organization to official contests.

As stated above, there are two unofficial contests with associated tags, MemeCon 2021 and NIGHTMAREFEST which fulfills these conditions. INTGOIcon won't be added as it is not hosted primarily on the -EN wiki. Any unoffical contest on the archive will be clearly marked as such.

I think this is a good update, but I disagree that INT GoI-con should be excluded. I think using the presence of a tag is good for including unofficial contests, but given that the GoI-con was an official INT event that numerous EN authors took part in, it should included, similar to any official contests hosted by EN.

I was part of editing this page, but for the record - supporting adding both the INT contest and unofficial ones.
