Metaphysician tends to use #site19 as an area to vent, but some have noted that it tends to bring folks down and dampen conversations. An unofficial warning was issued some time ago by Decibelle:

While the behavior was noted to have continued, there was a specific incident today that prompted the warning. So posting the context that prompted us to warn him is probably for the best, to avoid any confusion on what happened.

Crossposting to this post for reference, as these two events occurred at the same time.

During the incident above, Metaphysician and GreenWolf engaged in a heated argument after Metaphysician began talking about the possibilities of a dinosaur civilization. Heated words were exchanged on both sides, and after GreenWolf left chat, Metaphysician lodged a complaint against GreenWolf. Only GreenWolf was written up at the time (due to the complaint), but enough behaviour exists to warrant this post about Metaphysician as well.

Below are several examples of behaviour on the part of Metaphysician that are not acceptable:

[13:08] <Metaphysician> But seriously, can you just go fuck yourself?

It is worth pointing out that, due to the outlandishness of what Metaphysician was attempting to pass as likely possibility, it was not even certain at the time whether or not he was trolling.

Regardless, Metaphysician claimed to have been baited and provoked by GreenWolf. It does not matter whether the user feels provoked or baited, behaviour like this in an official channel is not acceptable. However, due in part to an extensive conversation on the part of operating staff as to whether or not this incident warranted a ban against either user, Metaphysician was never banned, nor was GreenWolf.

With this in mind, the operators preferred to give both users a final warning, noting that any additional such behaviour would result in a long ban (skipping a short ban due to repeated warnings in the past).

Metaphysician was involved in being snarky when I tried to lightly redirect a conversation to not turn shitty, like I've seen this road traveled so many times. Part of the same incident as the second set of logs in this, although Metaphysician was alright up until the following point, so I've only included the relevant stuff here (thanks to Tuomey for these logs).

Further discussion of Metaphysician's ban in this post in Roxie's thread. More under a cut below.

TL;DR: Metaphysician's ban stands at two weeks, because of the above abuse in 17 (or it would be one week). His ban is not to be escalated further at this time. People should not be unnecessarily punished for making complaints, even if the complaints also contain abuse. Metaphysician is free to return after two weeks.

If Meta does return, ops need to be more careful about stopping Meta from simply mentioning his disabilities. There is not anything wrong with that, even for a user who is 'on notice' for using 19 as a diary too much.

More lengthy discussion under the cut.

After months of hearing complaints both about and on behalf of Metaphysician, I do think he has grounds for some complaint. Does not apply in this case, but I feel it should be recorded.

There have been a few times where I've observed that people come down on him too hard for "using site19 as a personal diary" in ways that aren't particularly disruptive, such as a line or two complaining about his disabilities. (Roxie has had the same issue — except operators haven't actually enforced that on Roxie, and they have on Meta, I'm told. Unfortunately I don't have logs re: Meta here, but I don't have logs, but anyone who can go through logs would be appreciated. )

I can't say I approve of coming down hard on someone for being disabled and talking about it in public. Yes, going on about it at length is disruptive, and yes, none of those incidents have resulted in official action, but I feel there are grounds for Meta to feel targeted here, even if it was unintentional (and I believe it was unintentional, barring evidence otherwise in the form of logs.)

Full disclosure: Metaphysician believes that I (like most ops) personally wish to target him (and, indeed, we had a harsh altercation in a side chat a few years ago). Unfortunately, there aren't any ops available remaining who have no claims of bias for this user, and it is my responsibility to adjudicate these things when there is strong chat admin disagreement.

There have been some requests of escalating Metaphysician's ban to permanent based on his history of chat disruption (logged and unlogged, like Roxie) and abuse of ops in the course of his complaint.

These requests are denied, by me, using my rarely-used owner fiat. We really, really need to err on the side of caution when someone is making what is, effectively, an official complaint, sincerely meant, in the correct venue for this complaint (#site17).

To be honest, on further review of this I would have commuted the ban to one week (same as Roxie's) if it weren't for the personal abuse of ops. At the very least, Roxie stopped her personal abuse after being banned, and even though operators are obligated to listen to complaints (including angry complaints), operators aren't required to make themselves outright punching bags. As it is, it stands at two weeks, escalation kept in place for the reason of personal abuse in 17.

Metaphysician is welcome to come back after that period of time if he changes his mind about never returning.
