Summer Promotions June 2020
Promotions! In June!
These are votes of confidence. If you are unfamiliar or on the fence about someone, vote NO. Only vote yes if the candidate has your confidence and genuinely feels ready for promotion in your mind.
Please post even if you are abstaining from voting.
As a reminder, we established a new bit of policy: Staff may abstain from voting if it is in regards to a Junior Staff member moving to Operational Staff only. If more than one third of staff abstain on a user, and/or less than 60 per cent of voters say yes, this is treated as a no. I will be rounding down.
Staff Interviews.
Staff member Taylor_Itkin does not match any existing user name organized interviews of our promo candidates prior to this thread being put up. I implore all staff to read these. The interviews can be found in StaffChat’s topic.

Deadly Bread |
Commentary: |
Bread has been a phenomenal contributor to MAST's early efforts, and a generally phenomenal Junior staffer all around. They are on call for whenever something needs to be done, and jump headlong into handling MAST issues. They volunteered for and contributed to the pruning of no less than two major logs, and went out of their way to create guidelines for contributing/pruning said logs in the future. I do believe Bread has a serious future in proposing policy with the amount of work they put in as staff. Examples of Bread's frankly impressive body of work can be found Here , here and here. It should also be noted that Bread has been a major contributor in MAST Tagging efforts as can be seen in the history of our tracking page here. |
Optional Commentary: |
It's kind of hard to see any weaknesses for Bread other than their relatively young age, but that's not really been so much of an issue for other staffers. I do worry that they may burn themselves out given the astonishing amount of work they do at any one time, but beyond that, no major weaknesses or concerns.** |

Deadly Bread |
Commentary: |
Bread has been an invaluable member of MAST, he helped to create the list of all the collaborative pages and did the legwork of pruning the SCP-261 log. He's been active in other aspects of the team and I feel he would make for a fully-rounded and productive member of staff |

JackalRelated |
Commentary: |
Jackal is another phenominal junior staffer that has been instrumental in getting MAST off the ground. We wouldn't be carrying out our preliminary pruning efforts through Erasmus without Jackal's assembly of a sandbox with a list of every collab log, hub, guide, and other collaborative works into one gigantic list. Recent site/staff drama, and University have really hampered Jackal's productive efforts, though he has continued to contribute to tagging efforts (you can click the same list I linked for Bread above). I think Jackal is ready to move to the next level of staff. |
Optional Commentary: |
The only major concern I have for Jackal is the split between real life and here. University is a demanding environment, and as always, I'm concerned about folks burning out on staff work.** |

JackalRelated |
Commentary: |
Jackal has been highly productive in the same way that Bread has, both in making the collaborative log page which has been an invaluable resource for everyone on the team and taking an active part in team discussions. When given a task, Jackal will do it to the fullest of his ability and do so well. |
(Optional) Areas of Improvement: |
Jackal can be overly sensitive to what other people think of him and this may lead him to second-guess himself or to become upset at perceived slights. I don't think this is a major issue for him otherwise I wouldn't be recommending him, but a little more self-confidence would go along way towards his development as a staff member. |

Commentary: |
Here is a complete accounting of Malyce's staffwork. Their direct subcaptain, taylor_itkin does not match any existing user name, says the following: "MalyceGraves is an incredibly hard worker and a reliable staffer. They regularly volunteer for work before it is even announced volunteers are needed, and are always first to volunteer when it is announced. Their work is consistently high quality and done in a timely manner. Quite frankly, MalyceGraves is everything we look for in a staffer." I agree in full and would additionally like to draw attention to their maturity and level-headedness which they have consistently demonstrated as chatstaff, and which I believe will be an equal asset to site staff. |

MalyceGraves |
Commentary: |
The Malyce, the myth, the legend. Most staff know them already and their introduction is hardly necessary. They do a lot of miscellaneous staff work around the site. Everything from staffposting forum posts that aren't in the right format to rapid critique on coldposts, and a lot of IRC crit. They've also done a fair amount of research for stuff on 05. Research for 05 example, an example of critique , and their overly-complex staff box. How they manage to do all of this and still write as often as they do looks exhausting. |
(Optional) Areas of Improvement |
They may be taking on more than they have time for, spreading themselves a bit too thin. They are quite active on chat staff, and that seems to have consumed a fair amount of the time they have available. They can be fairly harsh at times, and their style of strict critique may be off-putting to some new users. Their rather strict approach to dealing with things might also lead them to appear unapproachable. |

Christ you're really going to make me list all these aren't you? Aismallard is a fucking machine. There's a lot of stuff that's purely tech related that they've been involved in, but they're so inherently tied to MAST as well that I would be Loathe not to mention them. Ais manned our Tagging subteam, and drove it along like a well oiled car. There are rarely surviving articles these days that aren't immediately tagged because of him. He created no less than four separate tagging guides for MAST's use visible here, here, here, and here. Ais has made so many integral suggestions and small contributions individually to MAST projects that rival is major contributions I can't beging to cover them all. I firmly believe AIS deserves moderator, and strongly support a vote for him. |
Optional Commentary: |
Have you seen his tech contributions? If you haven't, I encourage you to look at this page. I have no doubt that Ais will make a great moderator. |

Mallard has taken it upon themselves to be the central node of the MAST tagging effort and has taken to a leadership role like a duck to water. He directs his sub-team with the practiced skill of an old-hat moderator and has the capacity to do so much more in the future whenever we'll need to call upon him. |
Optional Commentary: |
In addition to the practical skill that Mallard brings to the table, I've met few people in my life who have better judgement and temperaments than he. Individuals with the capacity for self-control and introspection like he possesses are few and far between, and I think that in adding him to moderation we would not only be getting a staffer who can get the job done, but one who would be able to fully contribute to high-level discussions in a thoughtful and additive way. |

aismallard has been one of the best forces for good that Tech has had the good fortune to cross paths with. Diligent, friendly, and highly professional and knowledgeable, he has taken on work at all skill levels and succeeded. I feel highly confident in his judgment which becomes more of a factor in this threshold to moderator, and think it will allow him to do even more valuable work. |

Bleep is obviously one of the most valuable staff we currently have. She heads up the MAST team which alone should warrant promotion to Moderator, but her organization skills, and community management skills are invaluable in a staff member on our team. |

Captain of MAST, Bleep has long been deserving of more recognition than she currently gets. The extensive experience she has in managing online communities shows through as the natural authority she exudes gives others a reason to follow her, if they weren't already sold on her excellent work ethic and capacity for thoughtful and reasoned decision-making. |
Optional Commentary: |
Bleep has only remained on Operational Staff by her own choice, and her humility is an admirable quality which I feel further enhances what she would bring to the table as a Moderator. |

Honestly, along with Aismallard, stormbreath has been a one-two punch of handling tag requests, making components, and suggesting changes to streamline the wiki, as well as remove extraneous bits of junk from articles. Similarly to Aismallard, they tend to work with pages that require unlocking, and show a good sense of judgement. |

Commentary: |
A user that excels in places that we can find some of the greatest utility in tech, stormbreath already has a good handle on the organizational-level stuff required at this next level. I think they are ready to make this move and will do better with a larger stage. We're lucky to have them and I'd be happy to see them move up. |
Vote YES or NO. Someone who you are ambivalent to should not receive your vote of confidence for staff. If you don't know who someone is, then I invite you to educate yourself and get to know their work before voting.
