Perma for plagiarism, I believe.
Another vote for permaban.
Perma. Will enact.
Can someone else handle the summary deletion for plagiarism?
ETA: ban enacted.
Deleted and PM sent:
Hello, you have been issued a permanent ban from the SCP Wiki for plagiarizing SCP-999, as detailed here: http://05command.wikidot.com/forum/t-13369925/disciplinary-slimecatking
If you have any questions, you may PM myself or anyone else on the disciplinary team. You may appeal your ban in one year from today.
Received a PM:
Hello!
I am the parent of SlimeCatKing and am hoping you will reconsider the permanent ban he was given today for plagiarism.
He is 15 years old and autistic, didn't realise the severity of what he had done, thought it was ok to 'borrow' a little bit.
He is horrified to learn that he has broken the rules and is very upset to be banned so quickly after joining.
Is it possible to give him a warning this time with the understanding that if he does this again (or breaks any other rules in the future) that he will receive a permanent ban? Thanks for your time :)
April
Sent a reply:
While we understand that mistakes can happen, the SCP wiki is a literary community and plagiarism is unacceptable regardless of the circumstances. The article submitted by SlimeCatKing plagiarized more than "a little bit" from the original work; entire paragraphs were copied with roughly only one word changed per sentence. This is one of the most serious wrongdoings someone can commit in the literary world and as such we take it very seriously here on the SCP Foundation Wiki.
Furthermore, plagiarism is mentioned in the required reading and Site Rules that should have both been read before an individual applies for membership to the site. All site members are held to these rules and should be familiar with them without additional reminders or warnings. Obvious plagiarism of a large portion of text is considered (per common sense) to fall within the "Other severe misconduct" grounds for an immediate permanent ban.
That said, in the interest of preventing similar misunderstandings in the future, the SCP wiki staff will clarify the severity of plagiarism in the required reading to make it more immediately clear that severe consequences will result if writers attempt to pass off someone else's writing as their own. The permanent ban will be upheld; SlimeCatKing is still permitted to appeal in one year for the ban to be lifted.
Got another reply:
Hello again!
Thanks for your reply, I appreciate the clarification and agree with the points you've made.
I hope in a year when he is allowed to appeal the ban that he may be allowed back in, he's a great kid, just has a tendency to get carried away and lost in what he's interested in.
In the meantime we will work on understanding the true meaning of plagiarism. And the necessity of actually reading the rules before joining a site!!!I'd also like to add that I really appreciate the way you've handled the situation and communicated to him what the issue was, it's great to see in done in a manner that isn't nasty or abusive!
Thanks again for your time,
April :)
Seems we have a somewhat happy ending.
Noting that at least two staff members have received the following PM, subject line "Appeal". Personal information has been removed for privacy.
If there is anything missing you'd expect to be here, you can explain the parts I have missed and what to put in them. If there is already an appeal from me, you may disregard this appeal, as I'm not entirely sure I've sent one the right way.

Why were you punished?: For plagiarism
Why do you wish to be unpunished?: So I can post at least one SCP on the site.
Why should we trust you not to commit a similar offence in the future?:
I have improved my writing skills, and can think of other ways to type out something in words. Before, one year ago, I wasn’t as good, and thought that using similar words to describe something else was ok, and that only making a similar SCP was plagiarism. I will now try to not plagiarise in both ways.
How do we want to respond to the appeal?
ETA: noting that I responded to the PM with
Staff will discuss the appeal and notify you of the results within a few days. |
I am voting to deny this appeal. It isn't entirely clear that this user has the maturity to even recognize what they did was wrong. "I will now try not to plagiarise" is hardly a strong recommendation for commutation.
Agreeing with a denial here. I don't think this user has demonstrated a strong enough grasp of the concept of plagiarism for me to lend my vote of confidence that they will not do it again.
I am voting to accept. There's an understanding there that what they did was wrong. While their response makes me question their maturity, I do not feel that we should maintain a ban specific to plagiarism for that reason: if they take further actions which are problematic, we can revoke or ban for maturity specifically.
I'm inclined to agree with Aismallard here, as it's very much not immaturity that we banned for.
I'm not a fan at all for the user's method of holding themselves, but I'm going to have to support an accept because this is an adequate appeal (though only barely). Understanding of what they did wrong, decision not to do it again. Maturity ban is easy if it happens again.
Upon secondary review, this is not a good enough appeal and doesn't convince me cleanly that they have any idea why what they did is not allowed or wrong here. Denial.
Noting that I received a PM:
Not to be rude, but it has been ~18 days since I last got a reply from you about the appeal and am wondering if it has been accepted or rejected.
Thanks in advance for answering.
Bringing this case up for discussion again.
Received another PM:
Not to be rude; again, but it seems the thread has stalled again; against me, if you want me to write another appeal, I can do so.
I sent back:
It looks like there are four votes to decline the appeal, one vote to accept. I'll ask some other members of the Disc team to weigh in, but it looks like the decision will be to decline the appeal. |
ETA: after some brief discussion with Disc team, the three majority is sufficient to confirm a result.
The user replied to me:
If the appeal gets declined, will I be able to appeal in a year's time, like last time?
Thanks in advance.
I told them yes, they may appeal again in one year.
Received a PM today:
Since it has been a full year since I last tried to appeal, I'll try once again to do so, and you can read this and/or bring this to the other staff at your own pace, it likely would have been sent hours earlier, but I was at school then, so if this message is sent at an inconvenient time, I apologize for that, but I digress.

I have learnt a lot in between the time I was banned and now, such as "fluffing" up written text without looking at other sources, and being able to make original content given time, I have also taken up writing as a hobby that is done when I'm not burn-out, explaining my previous points. I do promise not to knowingly plagiarise other texts, meaning I'll try as hard as possible to make sure that if there are a lot of similarities between my own and an older text, it'll be a coincidence. If this is not written in a way you expect or need, I apologize for that, and I'll then simply wait another year to be able to post another if my appeal is not accepted.
Noting that I replied with:
I will bring this forward to staff for discussion. |
Received a PM:
Not to be rude, but it has been a week since you replied telling me that you'd bring the appeal to staff for discussion, and I'm wondering how it's currently going, if it isn't too much to ask, a simple one sentence reply about the discussion can suffice for the moment.
Will notify the Disc team again for responses.
Agreeing on lifting the ban. If they've improved, great. If not, we'll just ban 'em again.
Received a PM:
So, if I'm right, it seems like I will be unbanned from making and editing SCP content. If there needs to be any more time before I'm unbanned, I can wait.
As of my reading it, the ban was still in place. I have lifted the ban and sent a reply:
It looks like there was a delay on the ban being lifted. I have cleared the ban now; you should be able to submit an application to re-join the site. |
