Contact Staff page?

A considerable number of the PMs I get include some form of "I'm sorry if you're the wrong person to contact for this" phrase. I also sometimes get PMs asking me about whom to contact for certain issues.

Personally, I feel like the "Contact Staff" tab of the Guide for Newbies could be its own page, linked from the left-hand sidebar. We could add a table of contents at the top for easier navigation.

I remember asking a couple admins about this, but I don't recall anything solid being decided.

Thoughts?

Edit: I am a little unsure about how much this might overlap with Meet the Staff?

I think this'd be a good idea. Make it so there is names/what staff belong to what teams? I get it a lot off site and I often don't know who to direct people to so this might help a lot of other staffers too! We're a big buncha' nerds and even I need a little direction sometimes!

I think it'd help filter specific questions to specific people for sure. A small table with people's profile links and what they can help with would suffice.

Eh, something a tad more visible, smaller, and geared toward more wiki related issues. But I suggest NOT making it it's own page. Like I said, a simple table of names will do.

This was my original intent for the contact information in the Newbies Guide, which is the only thing we still require people to read to join the site. Hence the reason I originally wanted it there.

This a good idea, especially if you add a link to their team, if relevant, and a short semi-serious blurb about their on-site responsibilities. Also you should include alternative means of contact, i.e. IRC, Reddit, wikidot PM…whatever modes of contact are the best for staff.

I think it'd be more approachable to filter for query rather than staff member—I feel like it makes more sense to give people a list of questions/queries and then the applicable staff members, rather than the other way around.

I like the idea of alternative means of contact, though I think those should be site-specific? As in we'll list the scp-wiki-affiliated social media sites and then the active staff there.

If we're doing this, I want something taken out of the sidebar first. It's already getting bloated again, which was something we addressed during the theme design a while back. Accessible links mean nothing if they're buried.

I'm thinking maybe "Wiki syntax"?

• although I'm wondering if we can get a general "members guide" for basic wiki syntax for people who are on the site but don't plan to write for it, so they don't have to dig through How to Write an SCP
• Maybe a forum thread in General Advice that can be linked to?
• I can write that.

That or the Guide hub, since that's got its own category on the top sidebar? Those are what come to mind for me.

Kinda like what Kens said above, but it might be useful to actually list all of the Staff Teams on the mainsite itself, so that people have a general idea of what each team does, rather than redirecting them to a somewhat sketchy looking site that many newbies (myself included at one point) don't think they should read. I think a lot of people really don't even know that we have teams, or what they even do if they exist. I see no harm in doing a minor blurb on each team, and a list of its members on the mainsite.

Yeah, that sounds good. I'm hoping for a little chart thing, rather than tabs, since a substantial number of people I've gotten PMs from didn't seem to check tabs when they read guides.

My thoughts are that the average reader of the Guide for Newbies won't be looking specifically to contact staff members, but it's important for the staff teams to be listed in the required reading.

Someone who is looking to contact staff would benefit more from a list that includes queries, hence having it separate and easy to link to (I lose track of how many new people I talk to who aren't familiar with tabs).

It looks good to me. With another list of a bunch of teams, though, it makes me think we might want to add to the technical team or some other team to update these lists whenever we do promotions/demotions so that we don't get them hideously out of date. But that's a discussion for another thread and/or admin fiat.

Part of me really feels like each team should have their own 'contact us' email, that the whole team has access to… or even just the captains.

I know the admins need it, as our inboxes are FLOODED.

The first tab is the new page I'm planning on creating on the site, the second tab is what I intend to use to replace the current "contact staff" tab in the Guide to Newbies.

I'm going to have a table of contents in the new Contact Staff page for ease of navigation, but currently the toc code is weird with the two tabs so it's not currently in there. And I'd just like people to weigh in regarding the little blurbs I've written for the teams.

Anyway… what would be really cool for the Contact Staff page would be some sort of module that would automatically reflect changes in staff teams based on inactivity, team realignment, etc, so the page itself wouldn't have to be continuously updated to reflect said changes. Not sure if that's possible, but it would be cool to have the team lists automatically-generated.

I'm sure there is some way, but since the staff teams are largely not part of wikidot or anything, I'm unsure how one would program anythign to do that. The blurbs look fine for the teams I'm part of.

I was thinking some sort of list-generating module linked to a bare-bones system page where staff names could be tagged with the team(s) they're on, and whether they were active or inactive. It'd be much simpler to just edit those entries for individual members than having to scroll through a page of text looking for names.

Plus, we have people noting potential absences on O5 fairly often, so having the lists be automatically-generated could also allow for little heads-up updates like "busy IRL" or something.
