Summer Promos, August 2019
Here we are. Promotion vote thread, August 2019.
These are votes of confidence. If you are unfamiliar or on the fence about someone, vote NO. Only vote yes if the candidate has your confidence and genuinely feels ready for promotion in your mind.
Please post even if you are abstaining from voting.
As a reminder, several months ago we established a new bit of policy: Staff may abstain from voting if it is in regards to a Junior Staff member moving to Operational Staff only. If more than one third of staff abstain on a user, and/or less than 60 per cent of voters say yes, this is treated as a no. I will be rounding down.
An Experiment - Staff Interviews.
Staff members Taylor_Itkin does not match any existing user name, Uncle Nicolini, and Lazar Lyusternik interviewed our promo candidates prior to this thread being put up. I implore all staff to read these. The interviews can be found in StaffChat’s topic.
This promotion vote will end in:
12:01 AM EST on the 20th.
Operational Staff Voting:
This is an open vote for all staff members.
Below is a group of suggestions regarding JUNIOR STAFF who Team Captains have nominated to be voted upwards to OPERATIONAL STAFF. Please read the commentary provided in order to help your judgement regarding these staff. If you feel they have displayed readiness, vote yes. If they are not ready, vote no; please explain your reasoning.

Junior Staff Member | Elogee FishTruck does not match any existing user name |
Feedback: | What a goddamn redemption story! From an early ban for trying too hard to be useful to arguably my most useful staffer, Elogee's turnaround was both quick and incredible. Elogee works at his assigned tasks with what I can only describe as Terminator-like dedication. He is a constant fixture in site introductions and a tireless presence in images tagging and enforcement, which are some of the most thankless jobs on site. While the form we received asked us to link specific examples of work, I believe Elogee's value as a staffer can only be expressed by a full look at his recent contributions and comments in his profile. It's a truly awe-inspiring scale that would be ill-served by just linking to a post or a single edit. What's more, he does this without any reminders, little direction, and without complaint. Elogee's a hard worker with a seemingly endless reservoir of enthusiasm, which is exactly what I seek in an OS candidate. |
Other: | I would be remiss if I did not point out that they were in fact banned for attempting to do staffwork while non-staff. I would, however, ask that all voting candidates read the entire thread, specifically the end, where the ban is lifted early by a unanimous vote of disciplinary team due to meritorious conduct. That, I think, says more about Elogee's potential as staff than the ban does to dissuade against it. As far as I know, he is the only person ever to be treated to such, and he joined JS immediately following its lifting, such was his good work. |

Team Captain: | SoullessSingularity |
Junior Staff Member | ManyMeats |
Review | ManyMeats brings a professional attitude in their duties along with a high degree of visibility. They are active in multiple facets of the community while continuing to be an active author, and while that's not a requirement per se, it does show the ability to stay engaged over time. Here is an example of a 'full crit' post they left on a successful mainlist article with few replies: http://www.scp-wiki.net/forum/t-10639292/scp-4145#post-4209363 … Also, while not part of their duties on Site Crit, ManyMeats has taken it upon themselves to operate a podcast which focuses on single-article crit. While this format is far too 'big' to be considered an analog to the site crit expected of them, it is nonetheless a contribution of feedback. |
Room for Improvement | ManyMeats often uses a lot of their effort responding to downvoted or eventually-self-deleted articles which removes a lot of the evidence of their contributions. While they are active in IRC, they need to continue to leave thorough site crit wherever it may be needed. ManyMeats 'chief' weakness at this time is perhaps a lack of focus in their duties, with many fingers in many different pies. |

Junior Staff Member | Modulum |
Review: | Modulum has been JS for a long time now, and has been indispensable in transitioning our reddit and twitter into well-organized operations. On reddit, in addition to other moderator duties, he handles the creation of posting of the weekly discussion posts that serve to guide viewers towards less well-known elements of the wiki. Example here: https://www.reddit.com/r/SCP/comments/ckq0y4/weekly_discussion_recommendation_thread_14/ |

Junior Staff Member | TheMightyMcB |
Review | Since becoming Junior Staff in February for the Forum Criticism Team, MightyMcB has been active around 5 days a week, mostly tackling ideas threads and preferring to do drafts in IRC ( Here is an example of what a typical I&B conversation would entail). Since joining, TheMightyMcB paired with fellow Site Crit Junior Staff member RockTeethMothEyes to compile a series of ideas to reinvigorate the team, with this sandbox containing the proposal that we presented to Soulless for approval. In addition, here is an example of a typical site crit review, with the header and disclaimer found in the aforementioned sandbox implemented. |
Room for Improvement | While they've have played a part in the development and implementation of policy within my teams, this does not directly translate into experience with staff operations on the whole. It is an area they will need to learn. |

Team Captain: | Zyn |
Junior Staff Member | TheMightyMcB |
Review | McB is super well-rounded and can handle all sorts of Forum Crit tasks, whether it’s addressing duplicate threads, problematic critique, or (of course) providing feedback on request. They’re very reliable in chat, and have a good sense of discernment when addressing concept threads that contain too little or too much content. Some examples of their recent posts: http://www.scp-wiki.net/forum/t-12273521/interdimensional-parrot#post-4323240 http://www.scp-wiki.net/forum/t-12280374/re:first-scp-idea-updated#post-4324703 http://www.scp-wiki.net/forum/t-12271836/wscp-snakebite-and-the-other-guy#post-4324693 |
Room for Improvement | As with RockTeeth, burnout is something that I feel McB needs to look out for. In the past they’ve taken on a lot of threads at once, so knowing how to balance time with IRL commitments is important. |

Junior Staff Member | Pedantique |
Review: | Pedantique gives some of the best concise/elegant concept reviews I’ve read, and handles the less workable ideas tactfully and respectfully with admirable maturity. He’s also often available for requests and re-reads that occur in chat and PM. Of note, I received a recommendation from another staff member stating that Pedantique should be considered for promotion. Examples of their recent work: http://www.scp-wiki.net/forum/t-12279881/telekinetic-teen-that-end-s-up-working-for-the-foundation#post-4323950 http://www.scp-wiki.net/forum/t-12263355/regarding-humanoids-and-the-x-men-syndrome#post-4318082 http://www.scp-wiki.net/forum/t-12218119/a-very-stupid-handyman#post-4313084 |
Room for Improvement | If I recall correctly, Pedantique has some pressing IRL commitments currently, and I don’t want them to feel like the site is taking time away from those. They may not be always consistently active, from what I remember. |

Junior Staff Member | RockTeethMothEyes |
Review | RockTeeth's drive to improve upon the Site Criticism Team and it's processes has been present since their addition to the team. They have partnered with TheMightyMcB to implement new tasks and promote visibility for the team, as well as putting those new additions into action. RTME has also maintained positive communication with members of other staff teams to ensure that any new proposals will not interfere with Site Crit processes. |
Room for Improvement | While RTME is consistent in their feedback and activity on the site, they seem to only do so when they would downvote an article. Though they are not obligated to upvote an article they do not enjoy, they should be mindful not to use their staff position as a weapon to sway readers to vote negatively. |

Team Captain: | Zyn |
Junior Staff Member | RockTeethMothEyes |
Review | RockTeeth is consistently the most active reviewer out of the entire team, and has demonstrated skill in reviewing pretty much any material they encounter in the forums, with knowledge of plenty of popular media examples and mainlist articles to compare to in the case something is too similar to existing content. They have an excellent grasp of site policy and are incredibly patient with newer users in particular, being willing to take a second look at material after the author has made edits. They’re active and responsive in chat and have helped start Forum Runs on their own initiative (basically, calling in reviewers in chat to address critique thread backlog). Super talented and helpful all around! Some examples of their work are as follows: http://www.scp-wiki.net/forum/t-12290624/one-last-time http://www.scp-wiki.net/forum/t-12291357/sadistic-radio http://www.scp-wiki.net/forum/t-12286473/the-sanctuary |
Room for Improvement | The only concern I’ve ever had regarding RockTeeth is potential for burnout—with as much work as they’ve been doing, I want to make sure they’re keeping track of fatigue and are taking breaks as/when necessary. |

Below is a suggestion regarding an OPERATIONAL STAFF MEMBER whose Captain has nominated to be voted upwards to MODERATOR. If they are not ready, vote no; please explain your reasoning.

Operational Staff Member | Uncle Nicolini |
Contributions to the Wiki and teams: | While his resume is short on particular spectacular achievements, Nico's career as staff is marked by steady good and work and an omnipresence that few others, like myself, achieve. He's frequently around and available to help, and he is an eminently reasonable voice in staff chat. I see Nico ideally fitting in a jack of all trade roles as a moderator, helping do the work that so many of us shirk- the page and thread movements, forum snipping, and locking and unlocking that goddamn metadata page. I have no doubt that he'll also be able to transition into a calm and collected staff leadership voice as he becomes more comfortable in the role as well, but the most valuable thing Nico brings to the table is a loyalty and a willingness to work. And that is by no means damning with faint praise- people who are willing to do the day to day shit regularly and able to do it well are amongst the rarest, and most valuable of, staffers. |

Operational Staff Member | Taylor_Itkin does not match any existing user name |
Contributions to the Wiki and teams: | Taylor has been one of the most impressive stories of personal growth to come from staff in a long time. Previously a junior staffer many people, myself included, were far less than thrilled with, Taylor has far exceeded all expectations following his return to staff and his promotion to Operational Staff. During his term on Community Outreach, Taylor was responsible for responsible for concepting and implementing the Seminars, which he still continues to run as a de facto CO subteam. I've said many people are doing moderator work before in promotions, but Taylor is the first of my candidates who is doing _Captain level_ work, and doing so excellently. And, indeed, often with more efficiency and care than I run my own teams. His work on seminars have proven that he can handle a moderatorship, as he is essentially already acting with the level of authority that it entails. I expect further great things from him in the future. |

Contributions to the Wiki and Teams: | TSAT is bar none my most valuable staff member on IO. I couldn't begin to count everything he's done for the team, particularly on reddit. Everything from our modtools, to our banner css, was created by him. At any time I was unavailable, he's always been able to step up and do what needs doing. |

Vote YES or NO. Someone who you are ambivalent to should not receive your vote of confidence for staff. If you don't know who someone is, then I invite you to educate yourself and get to know their work before voting.
