I was getting ready to issue a warning in this thread after someone replied to a closed staff post to explain that they have teh autism and therefore can't behave and such as, when I noticed that we don't actually say anywhere in the site rules that people aren't supposed to reply to staff posts marked "closed". Presently, as far as the rules are concerned, this is only true of stop orders.

We've definitely enforced the closed staff post thing in the past, which means that there's clearly staff intent for closed posts to be just that. Proposing that we revise this section of the site rules to reflect the "no responding to closed staff posts" thing. Preferably, we would just say "no responding to staff posts unless they're marked 'open' " to make things easier.

I personally prefer the "open unless we explicitly designate them closed" approach.

It seems the issue is that the term "closed staff post" was never actually defined in the required reading as demarking a staff post that is, y'know, closed to reply. I have to admit that there's a part of me that's reluctant to add a new line in the rules for every time that a term that context should clearly explain is misunderstood. But technically speaking. I don't see any harm in adding a few words to the rules, the Guide to Newbies (which repeats the same concept as the rules), and elsewhere to clarify the point.

I completely agree. The simpler things are, the better. And yes, I always figured the whole big-assed "CLOSED" at the top of the message adequately conveyed the concept, but this seems to be kind of a common occurrence among newbs.

Nothing more than a tweak to existing language in the Site Rules and Guide to Newbies should be required.

We could theoretically add a little "do not reply to this post if you are not staff" at the bottom like we do on deletion votes. Then again, most people realize that the term Closed means exactly that, and adding words to the Site Rules on the topic may be an exercise in futility since the people who don't understand what closed posts are probably didn't read the rules either. I think we're fine as-is but a small tweak can't hurt.

I think the first part of this sounds good. Relying on people to understand the intent of certain things is not as good as spelling it out clearly.

The little warning sounds good to me.

A minor revision to the rules that would clarify this? I certainly don't see why not.

Reject also has a good idea, though:

We could theoretically add a little "do not reply to this post if you are not staff" at the bottom like we do on deletion votes.

If you feel clarification is necessary, this is always also an option.

I think adding a little bit at the site rules is less overall effort than having to add "no responderino" to every closed staffie post.

Here's a quick mockup of what I have in mind, to be added to the "Moderative Posts" sub-heading in the Site Rules:

• Closed Post: Do not respond to these posts.

Pretty simple stuff. I can add this to Site Rules and a similar note to the Guide to Newbies if Admins want.
