I don't think this needs to be a staff-organized stickied thread, or a complete page.

This. I was one of the ones that helped clear out the crap, and put up the existing restrictions on the Expert Witnesses page. Without some kind of actual commitment to help, it just becomes a place for people to fluff their credentials with no actual benefit.

The reason we had the "non-pro" thread in the first place is that the expert witnesses page got massively spammed with exactly the sort of "well, I can weave a basket" and "I play lots of vidja gaems" type crap until we instituted the current rules. I'm afraid that making an official non-pro page would just invite exactly the same sort of thing and be WAY more hassle than it's worth.

If they do that, we can just not edit them into the first post. I mean, I assume all of the information on the helpers is going to be compiled into the OP, and the rules are going to be in big text.

For the being-online-recently thing, I'd say if someone is AFK for two months, they can be taken off the list. They could obviously ask to be left on if they're just lurking, or to be taken off if they know they'll be out for a long time.

1. I'm kind of on the fence. On one hand, it'd be way better to have people post on the thread then try and regulate updates through PM. On another, I'm a little leery of newbies posting without having read requirements and just listing a ton of video games they're really good and awesome at, guys.

I don't think it'd be that much of a problem, and I guess mods/admins can always delete irrelevant posts. I can get behind it being unlocked.

2. Yes. This.

Overall, I like the idea. Thoughts:

I don't see why we should lock it. Posting in the thread seems like the most straightforward way of saying that you can be an information source.

Perhaps we should institute some "has been online in the past X" requirement.

So recently, I saw a post on the Expert Witnesses page, where someone was looking for the "Non-Professional Helpers' Thread".

The thread in question is on page 2 of the Expert Witnesses discussion page, and is here: http://www.scp-wiki.net/forum/t-469950#post-1455710

Seeing as the last time it's been edited is 2012… I'm thinking we can make this "non-professional helpers' thread" into an actual stickied (locked?) thread on the forums, and have links between it and the expert witnesses guide.

I'm just not too sure about requirements for being put on the list. Personally, I'm thinking that they have to have a members' page (3 works on the wiki) to ensure that if they are contacted through PM, they'll be able to give solid advice about writing as well as their non-professional topic of knowledge.

Anyway, thoughts? It'd be simple enough to just copy-paste the coding into a new thread and keep editing that thread on the forums, and it'd be easier for newer members to find.
