Item #: SCP-XXXX Object Class: Euclid Special Containment Procedures: Due to SCP-XXXX’s visual indistinguishability from ordinary human hair, physical containment of individual instances is not possible. Containment efforts are therefore focused on identification, monitoring, and information control. Foundation front companies operating within the cosmetology, dermatology, and hair-care industries (see Document XXXX-A, “Operation LUSTRE”) are to distribute a proprietary UV- reactive screening comb to salons, barbershops, and clinics within a 50 km radius of any confirmed cluster of SCP-XXXX activity. Strands of SCP-XXXX fluoresce a faint blue-violet under 365nm UV light for approximately 0.4 seconds after contact, distinguishing them from non-anomalous hair. Any stylist, technician, or embedded Foundation agent identifying this reaction is to discreetly photograph the reaction (if possible) and report the client’s information through standard channels. Confirmed hosts are not to be informed of SCP-XXXX’s anomalous nature except by Foundation personnel with Level 2 clearance or higher operating under an approved medical-study cover pretext (currently “Longitudinal Keratin Health Initiative”). Hosts are to be offered ongoing, Foundation-subsidized “trichological monitoring” to maintain proximity and observation without arousing suspicion. Hosts who decline participation are to be monitored remotely via periodic pretext contact (mailers, promotional offers, social media engagement by Foundation-controlled accounts). Under no circumstances is any instance of SCP-XXXX to be cut, shaved, plucked, chemically dissolved, or otherwise forcibly separated from a living host without direct authorization from a member of the O5 Council. Requests for emergency removal on medical or psychiatric grounds are to be redirected to Foundation counseling staff, who are trained to de-escalate host distress without attempting extraction. Should evidence emerge of SCP-XXXX instances appearing in individuals with no prior contact with a known host (suggesting an airborne, waterborne, or otherwise long-range transmission vector), containment protocol is to be escalated to Site Director review and this document flagged for immediate revision. Description: SCP-XXXX is a designation for a population of anomalous human hair strands exhibiting low-level sentience and parasitic behavior. Individual instances are structurally identical to ordinary keratin-based human hair under standard microscopy and chemical assay, with the sole reliable distinguishing feature being a subtle, unusually lustrous sheen visible in direct light, and a faint fluorescent reaction under UV exposure (see Containment Procedures). SCP-XXXX preferentially colonizes hosts with hair length at or exceeding approximately 25 cm, a threshold statistically more common among female hosts in most documented populations; however, instances have been confirmed in male and non-binary hosts meeting the same length criterion, indicating the entity’s host preference is governed by hair length rather than host sex. The mechanism by which SCP-XXXX distinguishes qualifying hosts remains unknown. Hosts are typically unaware that any portion of their hair is anomalous. SCP-XXXX does not appear to affect host cognition, personality, or physical health under normal circumstances, and most hosts describe no unusual sensation beyond an occasional, easily dismissed impression that their hair is “healthier” or “more responsive” than before. SCP-XXXX exhibits what Foundation researchers have characterized as a protective instinct toward its host. Documented behaviors include: Rapid repositioning of strands to shield a host’s eyes or face from sudden airborne debris. Subtle tightening or bracing around the scalp in moments preceding host falls or collisions, in a small number of cases apparently reducing injury severity. Extreme, violent resistance to any attempt at removal (see below). This protective behavior does not extend to the individual attempting removal, regardless of that individual’s relationship to the host or stated intent. Any attempt to cut, pull, extract, or chemically destroy an instance of SCP-XXXX — even a single strand — triggers an immediate and disproportionate defensive response. Within an average of 1.2 seconds, all instances present on the host’s scalp reposition at speeds inconsistent with the tensile and structural properties of ordinary keratin, wrapping around the nearest limb, wrist, or throat of the individual responsible for the attempted removal. In 4 of 5 documented incidents, this resulted in fatal strangulation of the acting party before intervention was possible (see Incident Report XXXX-1). The host his/herself is never targeted by this response, even when the host is the one attempting self-removal. SCP-XXXX reproduces at a rate significantly exceeding normal human hair growth. New instances have been observed to appear in the hair of individuals in sustained close contact with a host — family members, partners, hairdressers — provided the second individual’s hair also meets the length threshold. The exact transmission vector (contact, shared grooming tools, or an unidentified proximity-based mechanism) has not been confirmed. Discovery: SCP-XXXX first came to Foundation attention following the submission of an insurance claim in ██████████, in which a salon employee was reported deceased under circumstances the attending physician described as “self-inflicted strangulation by the client’s own hair.” Local police attributed the incident to an equipment malfunction (a salon-owned automated hair-wrapping tool) and the case was closed without further investigation. Foundation agents monitoring unusual mortality reports flagged the case three weeks later; the surviving client (now designated SCP-XXXX-1’s first confirmed host) was located and placed under discreet observation. Addendum XXXX-1, Incident Report: During an unauthorized field test, Agent ██████ attempted to remove a single strand of confirmed SCP-XXXX material from host designation XXXX-1 using sterile forceps, believing the strand to be inert once separated from the scalp. Contrary to expectation, the excised strand did not go inert; instead, all remaining instances on the host’s scalp responded within the average window described above. Agent ██████ sustained lacerations to both wrists before Foundation medical staff intervened; the host was uninjured and reported no memory of the strands moving. Agent ██████ has since been reassigned to administrative duty. This incident directly informed the current O5-authorization requirement for any removal attempt.
