The original bust of Raffles was cast in 1817 by Sir Francis Legatt Chantrey. According to records, it was made of marble and cost Raffles £126. Later, it was lost when the ship bearing Raffles and his family from Sumatra to England was shipwrecked on 2 February 1824. A plaster copy of the original bust was, however, kept by Chantrey, and he moulded two replicas of the original bust. One was presented to the Zoological Society of London in 1877, and the other belonged to Raffles’ wife, Lady Sophia. After Raffles’ death in 1826, she presented it to Singapore Raffles institution (then known as the Singapore Institution) around 1830.

Description:

SCP-9081 [Sir Stamford Raffles] is a a series of white marble busts of Thomas Stamford Bingley Raffles respectively found outside the Year 1–4 General Office and Year 5–6 General Offices of Singapore Raffles institution. there is also another, smaller bust that resides in the Board Room of the Year 1–4 General Office. Although not easily visible, the existence of this third bust is essential for the SCP to function as a whole.
