I would take this opportunity to remind people that previous attempts have been "failures" only in the sense that the ultimate objective has not been achieved. A tremendous amount of positive change has come from dissecting the things we've come across in the process. So even though previous approaches haven't translated into the result we set out to achieve, failure is a really strong word to bring to bear.

With regards to a discussion thread, I'm not even terribly sure that it's allowed/intended to have a policy go straight to vote without a discussion.

So… putting it up to vote means that we couldn't reach a consensus, but skipping a discussion thread implies that there was already some kind of consensus and further discussion wasn't needed. I'm sure someone's going to say that voting threads aren't the place to be having this discussion, and you're right…. discussion threads are, lol.

I disagree with the notion that we needed a discussion thread for this. The reason previous charter rewrite attempts have failed is due to single person points of failure, and an inability to focus and lock down our attention on the charter rewrite. While I acknowledge Gee's opinion, it's simply wrong.

Gee raises a good point, a discussion thread for this should have happened. That said, there were talks in staffchat about it, and having the charter as the sole priority should (at least theoretically) make drafting, implementing, and following a full plan a lot easier than… whatever we have now.

because of how many charter rewrites have failed in just the last couple of years (like four or five) and how many have succeeded (less than one) im not particularly comfortable voting yes without knowing that much about how this one will be different. the better order to do this in would have been to post this *after* those discussions u say are going to go up at some point, so it's possible to judge whether or not this is a good idea with the appropriate context. also, why no discussion thread for this?

I may be prone to rushing things through, but I'm cool with slowing down as long as we're actually getting shit done.

We've been wrapping ourselves in so much other bureaucracy that we don't even know where to focus our attention most of the time.

This has long been an albatross around our neck, and it is time a push was made to solve this issue, so as to provide a stronger basis moving forward with policy proposals.

As such, we are calling for a staff-wide vote to temporarily halt additional policy proposals for at least a period of 45 days + voting time with an exception of emergency discussion (i.e. discussions or policy that poses an existential threat to the site if not dealt with in a timely manner during this time period).

During this time period, the plan would be to have manpower and staff discussion bandwidth redirected to charter rewrite. To facilitate this, we recommend the creation of a policy overhaul channel in staffcord, to facilitate discussion on approach, as well as a review of the charter rewrite as it is created. A separate discussion thread will go live with this proposal shortly.

As this is to be a monumental undertaking by staff as a whole, the option is to be left open to extend this period in 7-28 day blocks if necessary, as well as early termination of this time period in the event of discussion/rewrite wrapping up early.

In addition, over the course of the next few days, the administration will be drafting and posting multiple policy proposals to immediately facilitate the rewrite of the charter as well as paving the way for future administrative action/policy drives.

EDIT: Clarification. If this vote passes it will be enacted after the above policies are wrapped up, as they are part of the process to facilitate this overhaul.
