If there's a good amount of time for this I'm happy to change the timer, I was putting it as a minimum since there'll be lots of feedback to implement and I'll need to get feedback on changes ect.

For what my two cents are worth, I think this looks pretty snazzy and would support it being used as part of a rewrite.

I will point out that adding making the image and adding it to the map are entirely optional, Site-5 is actually using the default image since I'm not making a site logo for something that doesn't exist, and I think it looks fine.

It's not like many people were actually interested in adding to the old version of the page other than me - setting aside newbies who didn't read the rules, I think the only people who added to it recently were Harry Blank, Ralliston, and Cremo, although that's mostly because the page had a 3 author author requirement and so not much was allowed to be added.

I would hope that the form serves the function - e.g. the addition of a map and the new layout should make it easier to find the site you're looking for. I suppose we could just list Sites like the MTF and GOI page instead of putting everything in collapsibles, but I personally find the old layout really hard to navigate because there's just so many of them now. This specific aspect of the format is something I'm undecided on though, but if the MTF page can have art I don't see why the Sites page can't.

Not going to lie: if people did decide that we should keep the old page as the "Official" one, I would definitely post the map anyway as an art page and ask if it could be included on the official page - the CSS is a little complicated and setting icon position takes some trial and error, but unlike a static image that means it can actually be added to without having to reupload an image file.

I am not actually that worried about the character limit since I doubt that we'll be doubling the number of sites any time soon, although I have noticed that when you have a very long page there can be lag while editing - it doesn't seem to cause problems while viewing the page though.

Similar to Plague, I have been observing the development of this page from the start (I was the one who directed Ralliston to Jerden in order to facilitate this rewrite) and I have to say this page looks really good. The new design heightens the page in terms of aesthetics and interactivity (the map) and I think this will be a wonderful addition to the site.

I did have concerns before the posting of this rewrite proposal, I mentioned the complicated nature of adding new sites to the page and the possibility of this deterring non css inclined members from adding to the page. Jerden in turn added the ability to comment in the associated forum for the page with the relative site info so staff can add the new site for them, which does sooth my concern in this regard, but as Edna pointed out this may become a large workload for those on the Collab Log Pruning MAST sub-team. While that may be a concern to some, I do believe this is additive enough to the site for the added staff work to be worth it. The easy option is not always the best option, and I would rather have something make users happy and take some work, then have it be boring and easy to update. I also assume this workload will more likely then not fall on Jerden since they are a consistent Collab Pruner and one of the people working on this page. I trust their ability to maintain this page consistently so my concerns of adding more workload to MAST are not really there.

With all that being said, I do support this rewrite. I will however recommend extending this discussion until after the holidays because I think a lot of staff are busy and may not be able to chime in on this topic until the new year. This is a big rewrite, and getting as many eyes as possible on this will aid it greatly.

Everything about this screams form over function to me, and I'm not going to deny the amount of work that went into this and just how nice it does look, but this is going to be a pain in the ass to update. The moment that a site gets popular enough to get added to the list here is a full list of what needs to be updated: The site itself needs to be added, a new image needs to be made, if it's possible it needs to be added to the map, and it needs to have the exact same format as the other sites in the list. Another major problem with this page is just how many characters need to be used just because of how code intensive this is, it currently sits at 106,762 characters which is a bit over half of the hard limit of 200,000 (which we had to learn the hard way through the harmony list). As I've said before the page itself looks great, but this just isn't practical to actually be worth porting over to the mainsite. As the page currently stands if it were to make it to a vote I'd very easily have to vote against it, this is in desperate need of simplification.

EDIT: We think that this was due to a browser specific issue with the aspect-ratio CSS, and it should now have been fixed. Please let me know if there are any further issues with the map!

One rather major issue is that the map does not work on mobile. This is something that needs to be a priority given it’s the first thing a reader sees on the page.

No objections other than the above. I’ve been following along with development of this and it looks absolutely phenomenal. Great job!

A picture speaks a thousand words, and the new version has a lot of pictures, so I recommend you just check out the draft first then come back here for the commentary.

▷ Credit where its due

◁ AKA who to blame for this

This has been a team effort by Azamo does not match any existing user name, EstrellaYoshte, HarryBlank, Jerden, L200, and Ralliston - of note is the fact that Ralliston brought this all together, I did most of the art but heavily based it on Harry's prior work for his Time After Time Password series, EstrallaYoshte coded the Site and Area divs and L200 made the maps for us.

▷ Additions

◁ Additions

It's not that I dislike the current Secure Facilities Locations page, it's fine, but as the number of Sites and Areas increases it's becoming increasingly difficult to find anything in that big long list. Although we've actually added more Sites while making this, I think having a grid of Site and Area icons to select from will make it easier to find a specific site.

The insignia are mostly my fault, but I think it looks better than a grid of generic icons.

The other addition is the map - it seemed like an interesting and useful addition to the page. It emphasises the fact that we have a lot of US sites, which is why there's a popout for North America, but I do think it'll make it easier to find the site you're looking for if all you can remember is the location.

▷ Other Changes

◁ Other Changes

We've kept the definitions from the old page with some minor changes, but we've moved it to the bottom since most of the terms are pretty obvious and the Site/Area distinction isn't really that important most of the time.

The only Site that doesn't meet the new requirements is Bio-Site-95 with 4 articles, but the description is very boring so it's not much of a loss.

▷ Edits and Adding New Entries

◁ Edits and Adding New Entries

The sandbox page is set as a collab, so feel free to make minor edits to descriptions or to adjust Site locations is we haven't quite got them right, but I think the main objection will be that this is too difficult to add new entries to. I've tried to explain it as best as I can in the "Adding New Entries" tab at the bottom, do ask questions about that, but since the code is a little intimidating the default option for adding to the page will be to post in the discussion page and message a staff member to get them to do it. The page will be left unlocked though, since minor edits and additions to existing entries are very simple once you've found the right location.

I want to emphasise that like the MTF list the insignia are optional, a default image created by EstrallaYoshte will be displayed if you don't have one. However, I'm happy to make more and I intend on uploading templates so that anyone who knows how to edit .svg files can create one in future - it depends on how complex you want them to be but a simple one can be done in minutes. These are not intended to be "canon", alternative designs are great and I can totally understand if people don't like them - feel free to suggest improvements!

I have checked and this version should work fine with a screen reader, although it may not be as accessible as the old version of the page.

(I've removed the timer, I only put it up because I thought it was required but I don't want anyone to feel they have to comment before the ticking clock runs out - enjoy Christmas ect.

Mainsite Mirror
