Just a note that as MAST captain, and the person currently running promotions, I realize that I was not present for the majority of this inhouse discussion, but I have not had sufficient time to adequately survey this policy and address any changes or concerns that I may have into it. I would like to request, if possible, that further discussion be run by me so we can coordinate policy ironing out.

After seven days of discussion with unanimous support and no substantial concerns raised, the proposal passes without a vote. Renaming Junior Staff is outside the purview of this proposal, and may be addressed separately if people so wish.

As someone who looked at the proposal before it was put up, no need to beat around the bush, I'm in support.

(no opinion about a new name for the position. I don't mind this sort of change, but these names sound weird to me, I dunno)

JS burn out is very real (hi I've been JS for almost three years now and I feel super burnt out) and I'm glad that it's being addressed this way, but I have one concern with this proposal.

If they believe the candidate is likely to be an effective staff member at some point in the future, they can choose to not put them up for promotion. However, to do this they must give the JS member a list of structured goals for what they should improve to be put up for promotion during the next cycle.

I'm able to speak from experience here as someone that has missed out on every single promotion cycle since becoming JS, I'm concerned about what happens if a captain doesn't want to put someone up for promotion because they're not very active? I've been dealing with burn out for a while and I've also been incredibly busy at home so I've just not been super active because of that, and because of that I've missed out on a ton of cycles. I've been told that the amount of work I've done is very impressive (which don't get me wrong, I appreciate hearing that) but every time it boils down to low activity. Having every cycle be like this is both frustrating and at times demoralizing, and I can only imagine it becoming even more so when the only reason you aren't being put up for promotion after one year of JS is because of your activity level.

This is somewhat ranty, and I apologize for that. But this is the only way I can think of to bring up something that I feel like plenty of full staff don't even realize is a problem at times.

I'd support this.

While we're here, and bearing in mind the perspectives of two experienced members of staff who are also Junior Staff posted upthread - might it be time to consider renaming the position? Junior seems a bit infantilising.

A name that clearly fits Junior Staff's current role doesn't come to mind, but if this proposal were to pass, Trial Staff would make sense - but that wouldn't fit flagsam nor Fullham's current use case.

I am all for this. I would be honored to be offered a staff position, but I'm in the same boat as flagsam - I have a lot going on in my life that would prevent me from maintaining the presence that a full staff member would likely need. I was made crit jstaff primarily so that I could have more authority in the IRC crit chat because I was spending a lot of time there but had retired from the Butterfly Squad, and although I try my best to get site crit done when I can, it's not always on the top of my mind. So I feel like the option to remain JStaff works best for me, but there are certainly other members that deserve more authority (probably not the right term but you know what I mean) and recognition.

Ah fair. The part I was grappling with was I don’t think I’d every “feel ready” to be OS. It’s a lot of responsibility in comparison to what I actually do. So it sounded like technically I was meant to be fired.

Personally, I quite like being JS. That’s probably a weird take but I wouldn’t want to be promoted to OS, nor would I consider myself to be particularly eligible. I kind of tick away at a little project I ended up on (specifics; licensing on Etsy. I have been neglecting it recently though I will fully admit) when I have some time, or I address small things I see here or there. I don’t really like the idea of being told I have to get promoted. Is there any accounting for people who are genuinely happy to kind of stay JS?

The Problem: Junior Staff was always made to be a temporary position. A transitionary state where staff are given a trial to see if they are fit for full Operational Staff or not. Since introduction, this has transformed into a more permanent 'lower staff' role, doing grunt work without the privileges afforded to staff. Working for often years at a time without recognition for your efforts is extremely demotivating, and is a major contributor to Junior Staff burnout.

The role should be transformed back into the original intention - a place for new faces to learn staffing skills for quick promotion to OS should they fit the role.

The Solution: With certain exceptions that will be mentioned, all JS will be put up for promotion after they have been on staff for a year with their consent (if they would be put up and choose to remain at JS until they feel ready - or don't want to be promoted for any other reason - it will not be forced upon them). This doesn't prevent captains from putting staff up for promotion before a year has passed, it just gives a specific time limit for when decisions have to be made. Promotion cycles will still occur at the same time each year, so the staff members will be up for promotion in the next cycle after their first anniversary on staff. If they fail the promotion, they will be permitted to remain on Junior Staff for another year at most (with the next cycle being encouraged instead), at which point they must be put up for promotion again.

There may be situations in which a captain feels a member of Junior Staff is not fit for promotion after a year. In this scenario, the captain has two options:

If they believe the candidate is simply not a good fit for staff, they can remove them from their position. Junior Staff is intended to be a trial role, and some people might not pass the trial.

If they believe the candidate is likely to be an effective staff member at some point in the future, they can choose to not put them up for promotion. However, to do this they must give the JS member a list of structured goals for what they should improve to be put up for promotion during the next cycle.

All members of Junior staff who are currently more than a year into their position must be put up for promotion, or one of the other options stated here, by their captains in the Winter 2022 (January) promotion cycle.

This policy is brought to you by the dream team of The Pighead, Dexanote, gee0765, Limeyy and calibri_bold does not match any existing user name
